Around 140 runners today in a slightly muted Scottish and Carnethy Champs race – in 2011 there were 181, and 231 when it was a British Champs race in 2013. People were still away because of the LAMM in Harris, the Trotternish Ridge race and the World Masters in Slovenia.
Still, the rest of us ‘enjoyed’ the course which could so nearly have been wretched, with a pessimistic forecast. But happily it was still, warm and midge free, if a little claggy and occasionally rainy. The ground was still very dry. And you really couldn’t get lost as it was fully marked and marshalled.
The proceeds were dedicated to the Borders Search and Rescue who received a cheque for £700. Fortunately race organiser and Norham Running Club-meister Les Turnbull had magicked up some beer, wine and muesli bars for prizes, none of which came my way in a lamentably slow run. Carnethy did not do great prize wise, the exception being Eóin with 2nd place, but at least I could remember that. If too many Carnethys win it’s curtains for stats. Results here.
