Annual General Meeting
The AGM will take place tonight in the Cabaret Bar at the Pleasance, 19:30 sharp.
This is your opportunity to get involved with the inner workings of Carnethy HRC, and help guide it from being a small Edinburgh-based running club to its rightful place as a Fortune500 company headquartered on the Californian coast. The AGM is a place where you can voice concerns, give suggestions, volunteer, question, demand, laugh, love and perhaps even cry. Or fight, that’s ok too.
Ultimately, this is YOUR club, and you have a say in how it’s being run. The AGM is also the best place to put yourself forward as a potential organiser for runs, or just give ideas of what we can do next. As with every year, all of the committee posts are up for re-election and anyone can be on the committee if they fancy. Let me know, and I’m sure we can find a proposer and seconder. There’s more to being involved in the club than just the committee, there’s lots that can be done if you feel inclined….and it’d be great if you felt inclined! In addition to elections, here’ll be presentations from the current committee, some financial, some running, some social, and finally we’ll have a ballot for our London Marathon place.
Our future depends on you. So be there!

Jedburgh half-marathon
Day 2 of the Jedburgh running festival featured a 10k, half marathon and wheelchair 10k. Four Carnethies joined around 300 half-marathon runners on a crisp but bright morning. The sunshine didn’t last, soon being replaced by a persistent downpour blown in on a cold easterly breeze. Hats off to James Britton for winning the race by a margin of 4 minutes in a time of 1:14:20 and Pamela Whitlie (1:43:12, 11th female) who was 3rd FV40. Other runners were Katie Robbins (2:03:29, 81st female) and Richard Adams (1:42:20, 79th male). Full results here: http://www.racetecresults.com/
This was a very enjoyable run on an undulating course generally along tree-lined back roads full of autumn colour; the last few kilometres along the pavement of the busy A68 were the only unpleasant part. Despite the size of the event, it was quite low-key, and it was nice to just turn up and run rather than be herded into pens to shiver for ages beforehand.

Ian Nimmo adds:
I was looking at the results of the Ultramarathon held as part of the Festival: https://www.jedburghthreepeaksultra.org.uk/
I noticed that John Hammond was third and David Hanna 12th, with Aisling Allum 37th (out of 234 entries). First female was Nicola Duncan in eighth, listed as Race Fitness but I suspect also Carnethy? Anyway, it looks as though she broke her own course record.
A new parkrun in Peebles
Iain Nimmo reports:
It occurred to me that some folk might be interested in knowing about the Peebles parkrun, the first edition of which is next Saturday (3 November; 0930). It’s basically three laps of Hay Lodge Park (where the Borders xc starts and finishes): http://www.parkrun.
Carnethy 7 at 7 Craiglockharts run
Cut through the woods to avoid the police; couple of visits to the car wash, call out for the fire brigade.
Fi, Jo, Peter, Patricia and Michael ran for a slower 7 at 7 run to the Craiglockharts. Heading down the steps off Blackford towards the Hermitage our group of 5 turned into around 15 as the faster runners ran along behind us. A small navigational error took us out of their way. A diversion over the wall to the car wash helped us get round the blocked off tennis courts.
Going down the bank and over the wall, we took the usual path parallel to Greenbank Drive bypassing the blue flashing lights of an incident further along the road. With the gate closed at the end recently, we climbed out just beyond the police. Going up Wester Craiglockhart from the Napier campus we went through a large patch of recently burnt gorse bushes. The smell of smoke helped cover up a smell acquired from the Greenback Drive path. Higher up we stopped for a safety check as there were still embers to one side catching light and flames ahead of us. Reaching the trig point safely, we stopped to report the fire. With a team effort on navigation we made our way home via the car wash.

Autumn relay roundup
The British Fell Running Relays (definitely NOT the FRAs) were last Saturday in Grasmere and 4 Carnethy teams took part. Elizabeth Leason was the hero of the day as she stopped her race to help a fallen runner with a head injury, called mountain rescue and helped to ensure the man got off the hill safely.
The Senior Male team were 9th overall which is outstanding in a super competitive field. Eóin Lennon and Andy Fallas ran a super fast leg 2 and were 4th fastest on that leg. Our Male V40s finished 65th overall. Mark Johnston and Michael Reid ran a very strong navigation leg in some challenging conditions, with cloud down to about 200m. There was some miscommunication with the team for the female V40s (totally our fault, a huge apology to all – Captains) but everyone had a great run and the team finished 154th with a standout performance from Jane Jackson on leg 1 and a great post-injury comeback run for Charlotte Morgan on leg 4. The Senior Female team finished 205th with some good runs from new members, including Danielle Dunlop who joined the club the week before so she could run in the relays! Full results here.
Working backwards, the Hodgson Brothers Mountain relays were in Patterdale a few weeks before and our open team finished 27th. We were very close to the podium teams for the Mixed category but unfortunately had too many females to count as a mixed team! It was an excellent day of racing, although a tiring weekend for Eóin and Rachel who doubled up with the SLCR the previous day! Results here.
We had 2 Carnethy teams in the Scottish Long Coastal Relays, and finished in 2nd and 10th positions. Eóin Lennon and Jonathon Marks both ran the fastest times for their legs on the day and both were very close to the existing course records. A huge thanks to Dora Parra for stepping in at the last moment to run leg 5 for a Carnethy team, and travelling up from London to do so (and to Nicola Duncan for hosting her!)
The other Carnethy team was superbly organised by Chris Henty. Thank you to Mark Hartree for stepping in at the last moment to run leg 1, and sorry about all the tarmac! Lucas Lefevre and Diane Esson both had excellent runs on this team.
There were also some great runs by Carnethy ladies running for an all-female team – Fifi and the Pixies – that finished 3rd overall. Mike Lynch and the other Carnethy marshals did a splendid job to organise this relay, which is a logistical challenge but ran very smoothly! We can definitely challenge for the win next year. Results and race report here.

Gordon Cameron Wins Club Championship at Manor
Gordon was waiting for this year and excelled when it came. Even if
Michelle was fast enough she still wouldn’t have caught Gordon who has run three
more races than her at this stage. It may have been a while since we had
a clear winner with two races to go. A further report will be out when
the championship is complete but Congratulations to Gordon who wins this
year for his mass participation, tremendous effort and showing that you
can still be elderly but elegant!
