Carnethy Club Handicap Series & Reports 2015 |
|||||||
There is one Handicap race every month from April to September. Points are awarded to the finishers depending on the time percentage you are behind the leader. Handicapper Phil Young has inherited Willie Mykura’s secret formula for working out handicaps (which takes into account recent form) and he has changed it to make it even more fool proof (ie proof from excuses and tactics from runners who think they can beat the system!). As well as a good race, there is the social conviviality of a shared meal afterwards. |

Arthur’s Seat Handicap – The last shall be first
Arthur’s Seat Handicap 2015 – A course of many colours
There’s a gaelic proverb my Dad used to relate when he was thinking of home that translates to “blue are the hills which are far from us” and most of us will remember our own “blue remembered hills” as A E Houseman aptly called them but here, as usual, was a familiar and close hill or range of hills for the final handicap of the season, Arthur’s Seat, which in the autumn sun wore a coat of many colours of oranges, browns, reds and yellows.
Some 40 reds and yellows, including one just complete yellow belly – Westies Pete Baxter – turned up to help, watch, take part or actually compete in this the 13th Arthur’s Seat Handicap Race. The range of handicaps was easily matched by the range of route choice – Hilary did both tops on Whinnie Hill for example but was protested for coming off the wrong top (?). The Wise Woman managed to find more bits of Arthur’s Seat than anyone else and so was out there for a wee bit longer than anyone else and somehow Willie failed to win despite a generous handicap over an area he knows so well.
Our race coincided with a British Military Fitness Training Team night, plus an Edinburgh University Hash night if my passing glimpse of Ian Jackson running past was correct. One of the BMFT girls seemed to be confused when she queried what we were up to. “We’re the Brutish Militant Fitness Training Team” I let her know but I somehow don’t think this gave her any sense of relief as she scurried off. I was only trying to help. Why don’t people want to be informed these days?
All hill races have their highs and lows and a high point of tonight was to see Colin Pritchard back out there doing the business and not last as he’d expected. The low point? Sadly Cat Meighan is off to live in Inverness in a few days and so this is the last Carnethy run she’ll do for a while although she will be back for the club pub run in December.
But enough I hear you ask, who won the race? Who won the series? Well, that’s Phil our handicapper’s department but I can say that Digby had an impressive race win tonight although I suspect he cheated by not stopping to take selfies, so there might be a steward’s inquiry. The overall winner? Well they quite simply exemplified our handicap’s ethos that was first advanced, adopted by oh, erm, me – that “many that are first will be last and the last will be first” and she was. Wise, wise, teachings now it seems.

As British Military Fitness appeared and disgorged a decided unmilitary collection of exercisers across the start line the first runners set off. Local knowledge or good recceing is a definite advantage on the handicap. The Mon lunchtime handicap runners have the edge here, knowing all the little short cuts that save time.
Slightly alarming appearance of a helicopter and an ambulance but apart from some blood trickling down Joanne’s knee we all got back to the finish intact. I was first back – this diet’s finally paying off – Euan’s tiny little legs giving me the edge on the downhill. Now, don’t lose the results this year Phil. They will appear shortly. Maybe.
But at the prize giving the series was won by Ladies Captain Helen Wise, on her first visit to the Arthur’s Seat, where her circuitous route left her last on the night!

Alternative Dreghorn handicap
Unfortunately my ‘new’ running camera is rubbish so the photos are all blurry; the rest were even worse. Phil arrived with the numbers in the nick of time having been stuck in traffic, so we were good to go. Not all in the right direction, but mostly, and it’s a nice route. Going the opposite way to normal makes you miss bits of path that you know very well, or is that just me? The final descent through the woods in the growing gloom was a little dicey with the tangle of slippery tree routes. Afters in the Hunters Tryst, where the ales were tantalising.
I can report a top quality soup, with a WARMED roll. Tick.
Digby
After a late change to the start venue from Dreghorn to Bonaly due to emergency roadworks, a cock up with the restaurant booking, and then the forecast for rain I was wondering if many would turn up for the clockwise running of the penultimate 2015 handicap race.
Phil arrived just in time with the race numbers for an excellent turnout of 35 runners plus 2 dogs. The weather remained fine and a slight breeze kept the midges away. First back was Michael Wilkinson, however he decided that seeing Digby disappear up Allermuir meant he was running too slowly and took a shortcut back to the finish.
The winner with map (handy tip) in hand was Alan Swanson, beating his handicap by 4 & 1/2 minutes, running in his barefoot running shoes – impressive given reports of the slippery descent over the tree roots in the woods. Over the next 15 minutes another 31 of the runners appeared from various directions with tales of missed checkpoints and detours. That left 2 runners unaccounted for, Lisa and Georgina, who were last seen heading over Harbour Hill on a reverse Skyline by Captain Whiteside.
With darkness falling, and fearing for the safety of his bride-to-be, Euan mustered a search party of Jim, Ross and Andrew, who disappeared into the gloom of Bonaly woods. Lisa and Georgina appeared just after 9pm; after realising the navigation error they made it almost back to the start, only to start the route again. Lets hope Lisa manages to find her way to Jura in time for the wedding next month.
That meant we now only had 4 runners out on the hill, a quick call to Jim to tell him all was well, and the search party returned.
19 headed off to Hunters Tryst for some pub grub and fine ales.
Many thanks to Pamela for recording the finish times, Nicola for taking the food orders and the Carnethy HRC Rescue Service.
Final Handicap is in 2 weeks time (Wednesday 2nd September), Arthur’s Seat, at the earlier start time of 6.30pm.

Gladhouse Handicap
It turned into a lovely evening for a run on the Moorfoots and it was even better to start and get away from the midges. A lovely new course, yet another approach to Dundreich, concluding with a very fast downhill finish on a nice gradient. If the parking can be sorted this would be an ideal venue. The handicapping worked out as probably the closest we’ve ever had with everybody finishing within a few minutes (apart from Michael Wilkinson who started 10 mins late and a guest who had no form). Thanks to Jasmin and Konrad for hosting the BBQ afterwards (and surprisingly there where no midges!).

Eddleston handicap

I love a summers day in Scotland. Pity it is only for a day. But fortunately it coincided with the Eddleston Handicap, with warm sun at the start and a delightful cooling breeze at the summit being compensated for by screaming quads, burning lungs and eyes stinging from sweat. Someone won. A bunch of folk couldn’t find the right way down which probably did my own finish position some good. Most of us had a great meal and drink at the Barony Hotel, and had a look at the Polish Map of Scotland.

Meldons Handicap
It was claimed on QI that meerkats send their children out first to test for danger so we sensibly did the same, and the tiny figure of Euan Burns went wobbling off in the general direction of the first hill, on the wrong side of the river. Did he know the way we wondered… idly… Well he seemed to survive so we set off one by one into a very pleasant evening with many and varied route choices. A sensible change to the route after the descent to the parking avoided all the fences and many sheep to ascend the last hill and dive back down to the finish where Myvanwy had lit the BBQs. Willie huffed and puffed and eventually got them glowing, and we enjoyed variously raw, scorched, gritty and falling apart burgers and sausages. Marvellous!

Boghall handicap
Cold, clear and sunny for a record turnout of 55 runners. Which caused some problems as everyone charged back to the finish overwhelming Chris who was valiantly trying to note everyone’s number. Boghall was for once only Damphall, and only Helen seemed to find the feared quagmire at the final stream crossing. In an ironic twist to my key losing antics at the 2 Breweries, organiser Pete Baxter, in his first Carnethy handicap, locked himself out of the car and had to be driven to Peebles to get the spare, for which thanks to CaliBob.
