Peebles Handicap 29th May
2002 Three visitors joined the regular Club members for our return to Peebles (after 2 years absence) for the 12k race to the top of Birkscairn Hill and back. Intermittent showers produced cold conditions on the ridge, in particularly the gusty wind which even blew the timer clock over on the start line, causing it to stop. After the ensuing panic, I adjusted the times to compensate. The conditions lead to slightly slower running times than I had predicted, causing runners to catch up near the summit and allowing the faster runners to finish first. All runners finished within a spread of 12 minutes though, except Richard who was paying the penalty for his last race win! Visitor Chris Upson ran the fastest time, and Willie Gibson was delighted to win his first handicap for a while. Most of us dined on the fine fish in the Kingsmuir Hotel afterwards.
