A cool, dry evening made for excellent running conditions
along the treacherous shoreline from Ravensheugh to Tantallon Castle.
All the more surprising as the afternoon had been punctuated by a series
of heavy showers. Despite the best endeavors of the (absent) race organiser
who had cunningly scheduled the race finish to coincide with high tide
there appeared to be few casualties. Numbers were down on previous years
and a significant fraction of those that did turn out managed to devise
plausible reasons for not running through the unique combination of green,
slimy seaweed and skin-ripping boulders. Those that stayed away missed
near perfect BBQ conditions.
Special mention must go to Finn for his remarkable stamina
in completing the junior course in welly boots and to Nick Schierloh for
his attempts to hoodwink the handicapper.

I suffered the usual criticism of my handicap times from
the Schierlohs, and Nick’s start time was a little severe for his present
fitness, so it will be better next time! Runners must remember that I
can only judge their fitness from their running form, so you must come
and RUN before I will adjust your handicap – stories of illness, lack
of training, etc. count for nothing! Irene finished the race first, but
both Nick and Irene started earlier than their handicap times. When readjusted,
non-member Fiona won the race, so allowing Nick to take the Ravensheugh
victory. Gordon ran this race with his dog, Dyce, but still returned the
fastest time, beating me by just 7 seconds!
