RAVENSHEUGH HANDICAP 19th June 2001

Organiser: Keith Burns

Giant Squid Attack Threat but Race Goes On

Kate Jenkins' normal state of composure was upset last night as she enjoyed a swim instead of competing. She was startled by a large squid which seemed to be trying to communicate with her. Her immediate response goes unrecorded and she escaped unharmed from an incident which would have motivated Steven Spielberg to make a film.
Meanwhile the runners were struggling back from the Tantallon Castle turn on a low tide which provided a wealth of route choice. The range of options had motivated Cali to lure Colin and Keith into crossing a deep flooded channel to short cut the bay before the castle. It was a questionable strategy, but the water temperature was pleasant. New Ravensheugh competitors Jill Tait and Robin Haynes enjoyed their debut on the unusually dry boulders.
Handicapper Willie Mykura gave Keith the mixed blessing of a victory on his home course, although Colin pushed him hard all the way back to the finish, passing Kate on the way as she was emerging from the surf to escape the confused squid.
More swimming, the barbecue and bonfire were enjoyed as the sun set in a magenta sky outlining the Bass Rock. Even the midges were benign. Angela M, Jane and Lyn biked down from Edinburgh by various imaginative routes.
The beach race once again showed that rational handicapping can't be done for this terrain.
