report by Colin Wilson

As a new Carnethy HRC member from the remote hinterlands (Perth) I thought this would be a good opportunity to meet a few of the club stalwarts while also getting some much required practice for the fast approaching LAMM. We travelled up & camped outside the Hotel on the Friday night but by the time the minibus arrived from Edinburgh there was only enough time to get introduced to the other “Carnethy’s “ & put in our order for breakfast the next morning , before retiring to the tent which was stiff with ice.

The 'girls' on the way to checkpoint 1

The first checkpoints were beside lochs

Although there was a causeway to the building, wading wouldn't have got your feet any wetter!

The pattern of showers and sunny intervals was established
We were up for breakfast at eight & started to mark the control‘s on the map at which point we realised that this was not a “mini” mountain marathon in comparison to the KIMM & LAMM but in fact looked so daunting a challenge that I don’t think anybody gave serious consideration to trying to visit all eight CP’s . Dave Peck had given us a time limit of seven hours & started us off at just after 10am. Everybody headed off together towards CP1 in showery weather with us still wondering which route to take for the day. We had been in the very same area the previous weekend & had actually visited one of the CP’s on a walk we had done then. Not really wanting to go back to this one we decided we would do the course in reverse order so we could miss it out (which seemed sensible enough at the time!).

The Forrests survived running together...

..and Inken and Mike are a good pairing....

...and the Wilsons were practicing for the LAMM together...

..so the future looks good for Willie and Jill - they won!

The sun came out when the girls team reached Corrimony Falls...
It would take too long here to give a blow by blow account of the journey but suffice to say we seemed to run into the wind all day, uphill all the time, find the biggest rivers to cross & the highest fences to climb. With only two CP’s visited Joan slipped from the edge of the path into a muddy water filled ditch (by this time we realised we were going to get wet feet!). By the end of the day we’d ran off the map & had to run three miles on the road that we could have avoided if we’d had the adjoining map. This conspired to make us fifteen minutes late & rob us of some of our (VERY) hard earned points !

...and lured them into extending their route.

The Tomich Hotel served first class meals and showers.

Cougie, day 2's start

Be back by 3.15pm!

Typical Affric scenery
On arriving back at the hotel a nice hot shower did the trick & we were soon enjoying a couple of pints & picking up a lot of tips from the pooled experience of the group. It was certainly heartening to be with a group of people with the same interests & who all made us feel very welcome & at ease. We retired early (10:30) & slept like babies till eight the next morning when it was time to get up & ready for day 2.

Dave Peck and Nick MacDonald heading for checkpoint 1 in the sunshine.

The rain was falling as snow on the tops though.

Oops, wrong river...The girls need more mapreading practice!

They got there in the end though.

Nobody wanted to stop for long on Aonach Shasuinn.
The start this time was a bit further up the road at Cougie & the day had the potential to be even longer if all controls were to be visited. Because of the time required for everyone to get home a five hour limit was set for day 2. It wasn’t till we set off that we realised how tired we were & plumped for a very short day, only visiting one checkpoint before running back out the track to the car & then stopping for a picnic at Plodda falls.

Keith's girls!

Inevitably, the sun came out when we got off the summit.

Gibson, Lord of all he surveys.

The things you do to keep your feet dry! Joan Wilson
The whole thing was thoroughly enjoyable and we’d like to thank everyone there for making us feel so welcome & part of the whole thing. The organisation & planning was spot on ; Dave Peck may find himself being headhunted by the other “CIMM” (or is it KIMM?) !! They say the proof of the pudding is in the eating – we arrived at Tomich with myself being a new Carnethy member & Joan a guest but left feeling like we were both full blown Carnethy aficionado’s!! (Joan’s application is in the post!)

A nest that almost got squished at the car park.

'Give us a hug'. A huge Thank You to Dave Peck
More photos coming....

Looking  forward to joining the Yellow Vests at the next race!!

Cheers

 Colin Wilson
