back on track at last

Friday Night and Saturday
(14 miles 3146 ft climb)

Six of us (Moira, Joanne, me, Willie, John and Duncan) travelled to Cluanie on Friday and arrived at the hut in the rain about 9pm. Willie got the log fire going, candles and gas lamps were lit, and it wasn’t long before we were drinking whisky and beer round the fire. On Saturday morning the cloud base was very low and yes it was raining. Our plan was to run to Allbeithe in Glen Quoich and return over the ridge and down Spdean Mailach and pick up the track back to the Cluanie Inn (an adventurous route by WG). However, the weather worsened so we retreated to the 10-man bivvy bag and discussed what to do next. Clearly wanting to get to the summit of something we headed east up Beinn Loinne (corbett) and introduced Duncan to a trig point. The journey back to the hut was wet, very boggy, snowy and we were all pretty cold. After drying out we had a few beers in the Cluanie Inn, and returned to the hut for a delicious meal and a good blether round the log fire.

Optimistic about the weather forecast we set off from Lundie for Carn Ghluasaid, retracing the steps made by the walkers in front. As we approached the summit plateau the surrounding mountain tops came into full view. Initially planning to summit the first top with Sgurr nan Conbhairean & Sail Chaorainn not looking too far away, we headed towards the next one. The mountain views came and went as we peaked munro number two. Trudding through knee high snow we occasionally sank to our waists. Impressive cornices were visible as we kept away from the ridge edge. At the top of Sail Chaorainn the weather had closed in completely but what did we expect in the Scottish hills close to spring time! Traversing south west we walked in knee high snow until we dropped below the snow line. Perfect down hill runnning back to the road.

A great winter's day out on the hills.
