    THE PENTLANDS ARE NOW SHUT
Due to the foot and mouth problem the Pentland Hills are now closed.
This is a difficult time for farmers and by keeping away from farms and footpaths we can hopefully shorten the duration of the problem.
Keep your running confined to the inner hills of Edinburgh.

TOUGH GUY ? CARNETHY MAN WINS!
    Geraint Florida-James tells his tale.
Tough Guy 2001 took place on its usual last Sunday of January. It was the coldest day of the 5 TGs that I have completed, with about an inch of ice on the water obstacles. 6000 competitors lined up for the event which incorporates a 6 mile cross-country run (with various hazards thrown in), and then 2 miles of obstacles in "The Killing Fields". The five full submersions in the icy water made this a pretty gruelling day and left me feeling disorientated for the final obstacles. I entered The Killing Fields with the guy who eventually finished 3rd, but left him on the first obstacle and I went on to win by over 2 minutes. I know that there has been some interest expressed in competing next year, so for those people take a look at the web page below, where there is an entry form (I also have forms). Enter early, i.e. now, so as you can get as far up the field as possible- and it's cheaper!

    NIGEL'S CARNETHY NIGHT RUN
It was a good night run, lovely evening and 16 people there.
Robin and Russell were late so I stayed back with them. When we headed up the hill we met Gordon , he had mislaid Dice (his dog). We were held up looking for him but still dogless headed to catch up on the others. We almost caught up and Dice was with them , he came to visit us, then disappeared. Gordon hung about and we ran on. We almost caught up on the front group at the col between Carnethy and Turnhouse so Robin and Russ carried on and I waited for Gordon and Dice. As it turned out, the dog had taken a contour line and caught up with the leading pack!
Gordon came up Carnethy still thinking of what to say to Debbie about the lost dog, but at the top decided to go back to the col and wait for us and Dice there. I headed down to Charlie's Loup where I caught up on the rest and Dice. As it turned out it was more a case of Dice losing Gordon.
We headed back and picked up Gordon and ran back to Flotty where a good meal was had.
I think we should give Dice a "Man Whistle".
    Good fun, thanks Nigel.

    CARNETHY LADIES ARE FIRST AGAIN
The Carnethy ladies finished first women's team in The Devil's Burden relays last Saturday. They didn't go the wrong way (unlike the men).
    MENS CAPTAIN'S REPORT
As per last year, we again managed to get 3 mens teams out for the event which was a great effort. The running conditions were fine, with a good temperature and little wind although the visibility was pretty poor due to the low mist!
In terms of our "A" team, Adam Ward and Stewart Whitlie ran the first leg and soon found themselves in the lead going up the first hill. They were followed past the trig point by the Fife team with the Lothian team, at this point, well behind in the mist in third. Unfortunately, both the Carnethy and the Fife teams then took a slight detour off to the left. As the "local" Fife team continued to follow us, we assumed we were going in the right direction! By the time we had realised our mistake and got back on course we had dropped back to 11th as we passed over to Geriant Florida-James. Geriant, fresh from his victory in the "Tough Guy" event in England the week before, then put in an excellent performance to get the team back into 4th place. This was despite having ran past the checkpoint and then having to run back up the hill to check his card! Garry MacInnes and Brad Connor then did an excellent job of navigating there way over leg 3 to pass over to Mark Johnston, still in 4th place but only 10 secs behind the Cosmics team. Mark also had an excellent run, managing to briefly get ahead of Keith (top roadie from Aberdeen) on the first road section although he was subsequently overtaken by Keith near the finish. We ended up in 4th place, a couple of seconds behind the Cosmics team and about 8 mins behind the Fife and Lothian teams who finished first and second. Adam and Stewart are definitely due the other team members a few beers!
The Vets team of Murdo McEwan & Eddie Harvey (leg 1), Bill Cross (leg 2), Andy Spenceley and Brian Waldie(leg 3) and Willie Mykura (leg 4) had a good run finishing in 13th (?) place.
Our other male team also had a good run, with Crawford Oliphant & Colin Pritchard (leg 1), Bill Gauld (leg 2), Russell Stout & Andy Patience (leg 3) and Andy Laycock (leg 4) finishing in 11th (?) place.
Another top performance from the girlies who managed to get 2 teams out this year with the "A" team winning for the umpteenth year in a row!

NIGHT RUN : BEECRAIGS (Willie Gibson)
14 runners turned up for the first Beecraigs night run. It was a lovely night with the odd cloud covering a beautiful full moon. We ran through the woods and round the deer farm and around Beecraigs Loch before heading over Riccarton Hill and admiring the views to Goat Fell.
We then headed off to Cockleroy Hill, fighting through bog and fallen trees helped and hindered alternately by Camilla's searchlight. The couple in lone car parked in a secluded spot will be going somewhere else next time!
The views from Cockleroy were also excellent and after 103 minutes and 21 seconds (Camilla had her watch on too!) we returned to the cars and headed for the restaurant for a lovely meal and a couple of pints.
Well done Willie Mykura for a wonderful run.

    GREENMANTLE DASH
We were still registering at 12:05, but the race waited for various late comers and the large handful of kids to get organised. Dick warned us that the river was especially deep and we should keep to his markings and we doubted whether this would be the safest route! The bog was as wet as ever and the climb steeper than last year...maybe? I didn't think I'd have enough today, but as poor Jenny was just recovered from pneumonia and Karen K had been living it up I flew past on the descent (always bearing in mind Willies ankle) to win, realising all the track sessions with Gala Harriers had paid off!
Brian Waldie, Andy Laycock and Karen Kealey also braved Trahenna Mountain. Dick Wall lifted every prize winner off the floor to loud claps, except me- I lifted him! The only race where nearly everyone is guaranteed a prize! .
    Kate Jenkins
    Additional report from Robin Morris
Kate retained her title in the Greenmantle Dash, Broughton in 16th place. Kate with Ian Duff 10th and Andy Laycock 15th won the team title. Karen Kealey was third lady and Brian Waldie 27th first over 50 and 60, David Hunt 33rd, Robin Sloan 41st, Mike Pearson 53rd, Janice Smith 65th, Ken Haddow (on his way back to Santiago) 77th, Richard Robertson 83rd, Schierlohs 86/87 and Jack Gillies 97th. from 116 finishers.

NEW YEARS DAY TRIATHALON (Willie Gibson)
It had been a sober Hogmanay (thankfully), and I headed off for the Commie Pool at 11am. The weather was far better than it had looked on sunday. It was 1:55 before I started the swim and although that went well I got severely beaten in the getting dressed quick race.
Heading out for the bike I couldn't do up my helmet with my gloves on so that cost me more time. The cycle was interesting as I thought I was going fast but people still screamed past me.
Then came the run, my legs were feeling fine till I tried to run. They were not listening to me as I jellied my way down towards Holyrood. By the climb they had started working a little better.
It was a hard race and I finished in 1:14:31 (51st),  Russell Stout was 1:20:24 (85th).

    PORTOBELLO PROMATHON (Kate Jenkins)
Despite the relatively balmy day, ice still lingered on the Promathon, so the race began on the beach for 3/4 mile. As I was driving on Hogmanay I felt quite fresh and decided to go for it and was over keen, soon to be passed by many more canny folk. However I battled on and had a good win to start the year!
    Karen Dobbie was 2nd Lady.
Dave Hunt, Willie Mykura and Martin Flynn also had good runs.
