CAULDSTANE SLAP
On a brilliant sunny, cold morning, Carnethy was represented at this low-key
event by its Club Champion, Handicapper and President! The mud was of a quality
and consistency for which this race has become renowned.

also-ran - Colin Pritchard

LOCH OSSIAN
The
Club trip to Loch Ossian was the usual success. Moira Stewart and Duncan
Baker added their names to the "round the Loch in under an hour club".
The mountain conditions on Saturday were tremendous and there were a few "Epic" outings.
The whisky was also flowing freely.

MOORFOOTS RUN REPORT
A dozen Carnethies turned up for the pre-dinner run in misty clag round the
moorfoots. Bill Gauld was walking (through injury) and the rest of us did
the anti-clockwise circuit, losing JBF twice. Colin headed off after the
second top and Keith, Euan and JBF cut off before the final top. The remaining
6 of headed on and came down one gully too far, heading back Murdo, who had
been trying to catch us all the way round, appeared out of the mist.

ROSLIN NIGHT RUN
It was a beautiful night for a run and ten of us (with a good few in fancy
dress) scared a few Roslin locals as we ventured round the castle and along
to the gunpowder mill and then on to Wallace's Cave.
The food in The Roslin Glen Hotel was excellent, thanks to Nick MacDonald
for organising the run.

NOT-THE-KARRIMOR WEEKEND
The weekend was survived in considerably more style than those doing the
ordinary Karrimor. Eight intrepid gastronauts set off for Taynuilt on Friday
evening and took part in a heavy carbo-loading session at the hotel bar.
The plan for Saturday was to climb Beinn Eunaich and Beinn a Chochuill then
return to the hotel via the entire Cruachan ridge. Half way up the first
hill we encountered severe gale-force head winds, thick mist, rain, etc,
etc. On top of the first hill, Plan B was hastily devised. This was to bag
a brace of Munros then escape by a low level route through Glen Noe and by
the shores of Loch Etive. Back at Taynuilt and fortified by hot baths, we
made a second assualt on the hotel's excellent menu. A heavy-metal breakfast
on Sunday prepared us for a second attempt on Ben Cruachan. This time we
were successful, traversing the Cruachan horseshoe from the power station.
Although the wind had dropped, the weather wasn't much better so we saw little
and missed out a few of the tops. Some parts were best not seen as there
were one or two hairy, airy scrambles over slippery rocks.
The weekend was enjoyed by Jim & Janet McWhinnie, Russell Stout, Willie
Mykura, Angela Mudge, Lyn Wilson, Jill Tait, Colin Pritchard, Adam Ward
and Nigel
Rose.

SNOWDON MARATHON
There was blue sky and blazing sunshine in Snowdon (a bit too hot). Paula
Drouet, Margaret Forrest and Joanne Anderson all ran the race (Bill Gauld
travelled down but did not run due to a cold).
774 finished the race and a number of individuals collapsed along the way.
The 3 hard Carnethy runners made it to the finish.
Maragaret did a PB completing the course in 4:23.16
Paula did 4:13.02
Joanne did 4:08.02.
Joanne says "I had hoped to complete it in 4 hours i.e. 20-30 mins
over my usual time but I must have left all my jogging legs in France!
There was 2000ft of climbing in total and you started the race with a 1000ft
ascent over 4 miles! You can take the marathon as 24 miles, as the last
2 are down a 900ft descent. It was hard with the heat but pretty scenery
and
a well supported route by the locals. The winner ran in 2:37.14 and the
first lady took 3:12.13. Only 14 finished under 3 hours as you are meant
to put
about 30 minutes onto your normal marathon time to take account of the
climb. If you don't mind the road, it is certainly a marathon I would recommend.
I think a number of Carnethy people could give a few locals a run for their
money."

KIMM IS RENAMED
The KIMM has been renamed by the Carnethies. It obviously stands for the
Karrimor Incessant Marsh Marathon.
Adrian Davis and Alec Keith were 9th in the Elite
Jamie Thin and Stewart Whitlie were 34th
Janice Mudge and late replacement for Angela, Maggie Creber (The Iron Lady)
were 9th in the Long Score.
Lots of other Carnethies took part.
Eddie Harvey (Planner) made the best of a bad area. The terrain was either
bog , marsh or myre. Route choice seemed to be irrelevent as the terrain
was so bad that the hills were insignificant in comparison.
Stewart Whitlie and Jamie Thin were 2nd last (But finished!).

OCHILS STRAVAIG REPORT
Six stalwart souls braved the elements on Sunday to run the Ochils Stravaig.
Starting from Tillicoultry, we climbed up through clouds to a clearer greyness
on Ben Ever. Over the other side we climbed down, past a spectacular waterfall,
into the depths of Alva Glen. The recent heavy rains made fording the burn
an interesting experience. A directissimo assault on the flank of Craig Leith
had us scrambling back out the other side of the glen. Dense white clouds
drifting up the glen parted occasionally to give us splendid hill views.
By Blairdenon Hill the rain started and the mist closed in - typical journey
run weather. A tricky navigational exercise got us across to Ben Buck then
fences guided us to Ben Cleuch and Andrew Gannel Hill. The weather cleared
to give us a delightful run down by the Gannel Burn and the tumbling waterfalls
in Tillicoultry Glen. The day was rounded off with coffee and cakes in the
local hostelry.

CUMBRAIN RUNNERS TOO SHARP AGAIN FOR SCOTS!
Nick and Louise made it another family double at Ben Lomond on Sunday. After
all the rain at the weekend, the path resembled a river at several points
and the mist was down low making for limited visibility. However, the rain
went off about half an hour before the start, there was not much wind and
the mild weather made for pretty reasonable running conditions.
