16th November 2002

Willie Gibson

20 People met up for the Pre-Dinner Moorfoots run. It was a frosty clear morning, there were lots of cars and 2 bikes (including a tandem)

We headed off for the hills leaving JBF behind to wait for Nick as he was a mile away on his bike.

The views were wonderful as we headed up Jeffries Corse

We waited at the 'don't-go-any-futher-on-pain-of-death' sign.

The Carnethy Annual Club Dinner Dance is always preceded by a long run round the Moorfoots. The run this year was organised by Keith Burns. It was 8:30 when Moira and I set off from Roslin on a beautiful clear and frosty morning. The tandem was cycled very carefully through Roslin Glen and along the back roads to Gladhouse Reservoir where we met up with the others.
As usual there were people turning up from 15 minutes early to 15 minutes late. It took us nearly 50 minutes to get there on the bike to find Brian Howie and Jim McWhinie waiting. Soon there were 18 people and a few reported sitings of Nick on his bike at various distances from the start point. In the end we decided to head off up the hill leaving JBF to follow with Nick once he arrived.
We all jogged up the road past Moorfoot and Gladhouse cottage and headed up the shoulder of Jeffries Corse and to the top of Dundreich .
After studying the views and waiting for JBF and Nick, our leader (mapless but with a compass) led us off the hill in roughly the right direction towards the valley of the River South Esk. We headed upstream past Long Scar and on to the top of Blackhope Scar, admiring the new windmills. Willie Mykura thought that they looked so good he headed off an extra mile to pass by them. Meeting us at the top of the hill. Keith attempted to phone Cali who was to meet up with us half way round but he couldn't get a signal despite standing on the trig point.

At this point the lazier runners headed back for the car park, leaving 11 of us to head we all met at the topon the rest of our round. We ran over the aptly named Rough Moss. The mist had arrived by this time and navigation was becoming difficult. Our galant mapless leader took us away form the good running of the fence line onto the worst of the peat hags for about 20 minutes. Many of the map holders revised this decision and we eventually found Garvald Law and made telephone contact with Cali. We ran round the hill to meet her near the old shed at Windy Slack.

The club bivvy was opened and 9 of us fitted in for a hot sweaty lunch and I handed round the Whisky-Mac and the Coffee.
It took a lot of will power to leave the comfort of the Bivvy and head up the hill to the col below Torfichen Hill, but time was dragging on. We were already out for longer than the published 3.5 hours. At the col Jim Russ and JBF headed for home while the rest of us headed up Mauldslie Hill into the mist. The tiredness in our legs must have been telling as we all thought we had gone far enough and headed East onto Huntly Cott instead, leaving a kilometer of lovely tussock to fight over before heading round a contour to the ruin of Hirendean Castle and eventually back to the car.

Then it was back on the tandem and off to Roslin to clean up for the dinner.

A great day with the usual mix of sun and rain, fun and pain.

Thanks Keith. (bring a map next time please!)
