Relays
Relays are a great way to get involved with Carnethy and get a taster of what hill racing is about. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you run. Relays are all about being part of a team, meeting some new people and having a good time in the hills!
Each relay race is slightly different. Some consist of solo and paired legs. Paired legs are usually longer and require more navigation. This can be a good introduction to navigation for less experienced hill runners as we can pair you with someone who knows what they are doing!
We enter Carnethy teams in the following relays:
Devil’s Burdens | |
Simon Wake Comrie Hills Relay
Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay
Scottish Long Coastal Relays (Carnethy race) |
In previous years we have had loads of teams competing at the Burdens and Comrie relays and we would like to replicate this or have even more teams out this year! The Long Coastal Relay is a race invented and directed by our own Mike Lynch. It would be great to get two or three teams out this year (we have no excuse that it’s too far away as it’s in Fife).
We have a place for one team in the Hodgson’s and it’s important we use this so we keep it for the future!

Devil’s Burdens 2024
After a 4-year hiatus, the devil’s relay was back in the Lomond hills. Thanks to Fife Athletic Club and Falkland Estate for hosting this event.
112 teams started this year’s race. Carnethy selection not easy for captains when you have so much depth and enthusiasm in the club.
Club Captain Sasha reports: “…thanks for an excellent club showing at Devil’s Burdens on Saturday! From the number of you who signed up (over 80 total!), to the late step-ins for illness and injury, to the seamless changeovers, encouraging support, and camaraderie between pairs and teams on the day I think we did an incredible job. And even though it’s not all about the result, we still dominated the podiums too with titles across the board putting the club firmly at the head of the Scottish scene. For many members it was their first hill race / first relay / first time in Red and Yellow / or simply first time on the Lomond’s, and it was great to have as many teams as we wanted out enjoying themselves in the sun 🙂 Hope the DOMS have settled in well…”
Notable mentions:
• New member (like a week) Nancy Scott ran the fastest women’s leg 2 paired with Holly for the Women’s 1 team. The team won their category by nearly 14 minutes.
• Joe Wright ran the fastest leg 4 for the Carnethy B team, making it a 1, 2 for the Men’s A & B teams. The A team’s leg 2 and 3 pairs fastest times proved decisive for the win.
• Konrad returned to racing soon after his incredible 3rd place in the 268-mile Winter Spine, this time in the shorter 8km leg 1 for mixed team.
• The decision not to switch Macrae last minute from leg 1 proved the right choice for the MV40 team and his nav skills, as reported by Stewart “I dropped him outside the community hall, and he started walking in the other direction!”.
• Eleanor’s home-made cake that was very generously shared was superb.

British Fell Relay Championships 2023
Carnethy fielded 5 teams yesterday as Keswick AC played host to the 2023 British Fell Relay Champs, in Braithwaite. Race routes were focused around the hills of Stile, Outerside and Barrow, and the trods and old mining tracks linking them. There were many fine individual/paired performances on the day, the stand out being Holly & Naomi’s fastest time on Leg 2 by 2 minutes. Our best team result came from the MV40 team who were just pipped for the win in the final metres of the last descent, losing out to Ambleside by 8 secs. The WSen team just missed out on the podium, finishing 4th. Excellently organised with 4 tough, enjoyable legs of running, thanks go to Keswick for hosting!

British Hill & Fell Relay Championship, Broughton
We hope all competitors and teams enjoyed the British Hill & Fell Relay Champs at Broughton and the experience of running on the beautiful Scottish Border Hills. 182 teams turned up – nearly the full house of entries – and most of them finished. Luckily the weather held out to give a mostly glorious, sunny (if cold) day.
There was some great racing, so congratulations to all teams and to the winners. Full report and photos and a video etc are now on the race page here. Results are here.

The Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relays
This Sunday two fine Carnethy Racing Teams journeyed south of the border to The Lake District. The Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relays are a highlight of any fell runners schedule, and the fine hamlet of Hartsop, Patterdale Valley is a superb host and fantastic arena for such a monumental day.
A few too many post Winterval beers on Thursday night inspired 8 brave Carnethians to make up the Open Team. And after some stern organisation the teams arrived spritely at the base of St. Sundays Crag on Sunday morning.
Helen and Heidi set the bar high with a ferocious first leg for the Ladies, handing the dibber over in 4th position. It was smiles all round after nipping at the boys heels on the climb, a swift traverse of Angle Tarn and the longest slip ‘n’ slide in the UK back down to the valley floor.
Clare and Nicola chopped and changed a few positions over High Street and came flying down into Kirkstone Pass to hand over to a chirpy Megan and Rosie.
With the day being as beautiful as it was, who can blame Rosie and Megan for opting in on unconventional route choices which offered the best views over Leg 3. It didn’t stop them from blasting the Leg and getting so carried away with the fun of a relay that Rosie even tried to Dib her head as a checkpoint during the descent.
It was the power duo of Lizzie and Pippa to finish off a great day for the Ladies Team with a mighty loop over Fairfield and St. Sundays to bring the Ladies Team home in 8th Position.
An equally exciting day for the Carnethy Open Team was kicked off with a stoic first leg from Felix ‘the goose’ Wilson and last minute call up Colm ‘might have had a cold’ Moran.
They set Iain and Liam off from the Leg 2 sheep pens with plenty of vests to chase down and many more to hold off! A sturdy gallop over to Kirkstone Pass and a few positions up the dibber was handed over to the heavyweight DD combo for the net downhill Leg 3.
After a healthy first climb paced by Dan with an ambitious mop up in mind, Dan soon had Dan on a lead which remained tight over Dove Crag until Dan came flying past Dan on the rapid descent and cleaned up a few more teams.
After some gentlemanly encouragement the infamous Carnethy Couple of Ali and Tim left Hartsop Hall in 6th gear and immediately found the hurt locker. A grimacing traverse of Hart Crag and St Sundays Crag they hurtled down with the 4th fastest leg and secured a top 10 finish for the Open Team with 9th place.
A fantastic day of fell running for all.
