Race Report

The second year of the Glentress Duathlon began again with the medium race, where the bike and run are thirty minutes each for the winner. On a muddy course the times recorded were close to the expected, and nearly fifty brave souls pitted them selves against the bike and running courses set by the organisers. The weather was kind again this year, and the race day improved markedly from stormy morning to sunshine. The participants were clad (in some cases over-clad!) for the worst….

Last year’s Series winner, Ian Wellock, set a blistering pace from the start leaving others trailing in his wake. The MTB ride this year was enhanced with a couple of “technical” sections to cater for the more adventurous rider. Others just got off and walked the steeper sections! Ian retained his lead on the downhill hotly pursued by Andy Wardman of the Hub, last year’s runner up.

The run proved mixed fortunes for all, with Alasdair Anthony (a Scottish International Hillrunner) producing a superb performance to pull through to second place with the fastest run of the day. Tracey Brunger, joint owner of the Hub, had a flying descent to give her partner an advantage on the run.

The event was well marshalled by Peebles Cycling Club and Scottish Hillrunners personnel, with no injuries and few straying from the marked course. Support services, including first-aid and packed lunches, were provided by the Hubintheforest. Being a low key local event, the sponsorship was from local businesses, including the Hub, PMS Limited, Villeneuve wines, and Keith Walter the Jewellers.

The second race in the series, the short race (20min bike/20min run) takes place on the 18th of January, with the Long Race (40min bike/40minrun) on the 29th of February. Places are still available for those willing to undertake the challenge. See the Hub noticeboard for details.
