Traprain Law Race
6.5 miles, 700 feet
9th June 2007
|
The Law Race frequently
suffers from clashes with big road races and other hill races at this
congested time in the calendar. But not so this year, with a field
of 74, huge for this course, where we try to keep the scale of the
event in sympathy with the bucolic charm of the landscape around Traprain.
The haar didn’t quite take hold, but usefully veiled the sun
for the race. This was just as well since it was still warm and sticky. |
We had a very competitive
field. It was good to see some visitors from afar; Giles Contier representing
the French diaspora from distant Lochaber, Peter Duffy from Saddleworth,
far away in deepest Lancashire, and Lois Nobel from Aberdeen. There
was strong representation from the local community, the host club Carnethy,
and the usual collection of regular hill runners from around the central
belt. |

The
river crossing was deeper than normal for June after last week’s
rain, but only to provide more entertainment rather than alarm. Following
that, Stuart Whitlie and Brian Marshall battled at the front through
the sometimes heavy June undergrowth on the way to the Law. There
was nothing in it at the steep craggy ascent of the east ridge, but
Brian opened out a comfortable lead on the fast return, Stuart struggling
against an allergic attack from some mysterious plant he must have
annoyed.
|
Brian
Marshall won comfortably in 38-54 from Stuart Whitlie in 39-26. Jill
Mykura (Carnethy) was 1st woman. Stuart Whitlie and Rhona Anderson
(Dunbar RC) took the veteran spots; Martin Hulme (Corstorphine) was
1st supervet and Gilles Contier (Lochaber) 1st over 60. Host club Carnethy
took the team prize with 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. John Smith was first
local after a quite a long absence from his local event. John would
be first to agree that there’s a serious lack of succession planning
amongst the local athletic community. Where are the up and coming young
seniors? |
|
We must record a tribute to the persistent fortitude
of Keith Mills from Dunbar in carrying the all-important lanterne rouge
at this event year after year. Keith has a formidable record that reinforces
the importance of this unsung placing in races, where the real effort
and resolve far exceeds that of the front runners in so many ways.
Many thanks to all our helpers.
