Carnethy Annual International Club Pub Run
The 23rd Carnethy Annual International Club Pub Run took place last night. This was to be a special year as there has been a change of Club President, and traditionally the incoming President sumo wrestles the outgoing President for the Presidential UnderPants….
With old pubs closing, changing into supermarkets and student flats, Jim had devised a new route on the south west side of Edinburgh.
About 25 festively dressed Carnethys met at the Royal Dick, Summerhall before a trot across the meadows to The Golf Tavern, founded in 1456 (a year before James II bans “ye golf” in an act of parliament, favouring archery practice). After holing a swift half we headed along the canal to Fountain Park and McGowans Brewhouse, a modern gastropub where we lubed ourselves with Beavertown Neck Oil. A short amble onto the Caley Sample Rooms where the round was The Special of a half of 80/ and a good finger of Shoulder Monkey Whisky. With spirits lifted it was back onto the runway lights along the canal to The Kilted Pig, now known as Foundation(?) where Jim had organised hot mince pies and the fizziest beer of the night. Being a hill running club we ascended the dizzy heights of Craiglockart Hill, and in the shelter of the trees, Jim produced a bottle of Goldshlager which seemed to have a warming effect on everyone. Following the Seven Hills route we called in at the Braid Hills Hotel for more fizzy lager. The numbers started to dimmish from this point, but the highlight of the night was still to come; new President Lennon sumo wrestling ex-President Hartree for the Presidental Pants on the spot of The Hanging Stanes in the middle of Braid Road. A very apt location as this was the site of one of the last public hangings in Scotland of two Irish immigrants on January 25 1815. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-hanging-stanes
Soiled underpants passed over we continued downhill to the Morningside Glory, (Hermitage Bar) and President Lennon treated us to full pints. I think the evening started to go downhill from here. Next stop was The Merlin, where Jackson headed into the Ladies toilet, to be followed by a nippy Barperson, angered by the Scottish Government’s Gender Recognition Reform Bill, and evicted Jackson mid flow. Being refused service, we continued onto McLarens on the Corner, with the best bar staff of the night, so good, we stayed for two pints. Now it was past midnight, so we scuttled along the fairway back to the Golf Tavern, but last orders had been called. We’d probably had enough running by this point, but four of us managed to canter to The Ventoux for a nightcap before heading home.
In total 10 pubs and about 7 miles.
Best barperson: Gasmin at McLarens on the Corner
Worst barperson: Nippy at The Merlin
Best Pint: 80/ at Caley Sample Rooms
Worst Pint: Fizzy stuff at Braid Hills Hotel
Best Mirkin: Neil Burnett
Worst underpants: President Lennon
Special thanks to Jim for devising the route and shepherding us along, and thanks to everyone for coming along and having a jolly time. Merry Christmas to one and all.

The Annual Carnethy Xmas Pub Run – 2021
Omicron threatened to put the run in serious jeopardy so leader Jim emailed Boris to get some sensible advice on how to conduct it safely. The reply came to stick with wine and cheese, wear suits and only talk about work. So Santa suits it was. Jim substituted the wine and cheese with whisky and fudge which seemed popular. I talked about my work a LOT and can only apologise to those present who may never eat sweet potatoes again.
We went for as many al fresco drink stops as possible, the best one has to be the monument on top of Calton Hill where Jim produced a flask of special mulled drink. It was really very good and the taste was oddly familiar. I couldn’t put my finger on it until Jim revealed that the recipe included a lot of Buckfast.
It was all good fun and Edinburgh was looking very atmospheric in the mizzle. Even the Grumpiest Barmaid in Edinburgh couldn’t dampen our spirits. Thanks Jim!

Carnethy Annual International Club Pub Run
Anonther year, another Pub Run. Another Hangover.
It was at the Club Prizegiving party that The Ex-Pres brought up the Pub Run.
“Lets do a new route” so after a few days and a few emails we agreed a new route. Then I looked back at last years route and it was almost identical. It is funny how the Pub Run brings on amnesia , I cant imagine why.
So over 20 runners met up at KB for a swift half before setting off.
A quick Photo Call in the Hall and then we were off.
Liberton Rugby Club welcomed us as usual and half wy through our drink the Sumo Wrestle of the Presidentioal underpants took place. A danger to health and safety IMHO.
Then out onto the Rugby Pitch and on to “The Robins Nest”. Welcomed by the locals we all got rather overheated before posing outside for the Pub Website Photocall.
Ellens Glen led us a nice off road route to “The Waverley” where we had another half and another photocall.
The it was off to Coylies House. Jura nd Mince Pies. I reckon we frightened the neighbours with our Carole Singing.
Offroad again to The Stable Bar. A pint this time and some more Mince Pies and a warm fire. A quick chat with the locals and a few Hilarious Tales of Pooh from the New President (note to the next president to check the pants for skid “Marks”).
The rain came on as we headed out, so a quick stop in the archway to put on Waterprooofs before heading to Whitlies Whisky Garage. We lost Billy and Dorothy But Ex-Pres Jim went to the rescue. Whisky, Red Wine and tablet. Wonderful.
Braid Summit was next with a swift whisky-mac on the golf course on the (fair)way , then flavoured Gins (not liqueurs) by the top. They were rather strong but after diluting with Gordons Gin (That is the Runner Gordon and not the Gin!) Liqueur was quite palatable.
Then it was downhill all the way to The Waiting Room for a pint.
A great night as ever.
The morning after demanded some full fat coke!
Club Pub Run 2018
I think I am losing my touch as well as my knees.
Turning up at KB for the Pub Run to find that the bar is shut. Unforgivable.
It was looking like a small turnout until a few stragglers and the “Already been to the pub” group appeared. Kudos for their forethought!
With about 25 folk by the time we passed the flattened “Briadburn”, we headed to Liberton Rugby Club.
Excellent (if a little surprised) service as usual, and the use of tracking technology gained us one more runner.
The fire door spilled us all onto the playing fields and we headed to “The Robins Nest” to the usual car horns from the motorists that we cheered up.
Amber and Jasper were barred from the pub, they reckoned the Robin wouldn’t be safe. So Gordon and Aidy drank outside as we all struggled in the heat of the pub.
We ran through Ellen’s Glen, giving The Northfield a miss (too expensive) and heading straight for “The Waverley” where we were welcomed as usual. Although we did interfere with a few games of pool.
Heading on past the last Christmas House left int he estate we stopped at the site of “The Old Bordeaux” for mulled wine and mince pies.
It was time for some mud so on across the fields to find the Coyle’s new house where Tallsker was liberally poured while we sang carols in the garden.
A quick half mile on to “The Stable Bar” but no baby Jesus at the stable, although there were a few wise men. We were shown the descending spider hidden in the rafters as we imbibed a lovely beer.
On the Chateaux Whitlie through Mortonhall Arboretum and we were offerred three whiskies and some tablet.
Stewie had entered a race last week just to win some whisky for us. Ta Much!!
Running the Buckstone path we had a last stop for a hip flask share before the road and then headed for the Waiting room for the last drink or two.
A great night, as usual, made perfect by a quick phone call to get Fraser out of his bed and give me (and 3 others) a run home, what a boy!

Carnethy Pub Run 2016
25 Carnethies set off from KB, most in very festive attire, with Elf costumes proving to be the order of the day. The weather had turned a tad cooler although the wind at least kept the rain away. Being a newbie to this hallowed event I was unsure of the format but soon found there wasn’t much to it apart from run a bit, have a drink, repeat! And make sure the person at the front knows where we are heading next! Our first stop was the rugby club (Liberton?) where we received a warm welcome and instantly increased their profits by 100% as we were the only clientele. This phenomenon would be repeated more than once. The first highlight of the evening was gate crashing the wake in The Waverley where one of the guests made a beeline for Richard (the only one unlucky enough to be driving) and soon had him out on the dance floor. Others joined in – you were scared not to! Highlight number 2 had to be the still warm mince pies and mulled wine (thank you Willie!) by the site of a pub which was formerly on the pub run but no longer exists! Nigel Shekelton’s hallway stood in admirably for the second missing pub (the bottle of Old Pulteney appeared to evaporate) while Stewart Whitlie’s garage was a very welcome stop with the amiable host serving yet more whisky, beer and even homemade tablet. As someone said “keep running fast Stewart” to win more whisky for next year! The Stable Bar would be our second last stop. They even laid on some festive beers – Rocking Rudolph or a very smooth Orcadian Clootie Dumpling. Sadly there was only time to sample one if we were to make it to the Northfield for 11am and our late supper. The soup and sandwiches were worth it though and proved to be the icing on the cake of a very enjoyable evening. Thank you to Nick, Willie and anyone else who was involved in the organising! I’ll be back next year. Merry Christmas everyone!

Annual Infamous International Club Pub Run
This year the 20 odd runners (and they were odd) who took part in all or part of the Annual, Infamous, International Club Pub Run, ran accompanied by the sound of music provided by Patricia’s, fiesty, festive, ok mostly maudlin shuffle mix on her mobile phone. Matt’s moaning about the choice of music and why was there no Wham (so Last Christmas) made me comment that it was nice to run to the sound of music, cue chorus of “the hills are alive”. Somehow this led to a challenge to write up the run to the tune of a song from The Sound of Music, oh and slag off Mike Lynch too. Obviously.
Oddly, when I’d said goodbye to everyone and run home a scene from the Sound of Music featuring the song “Goodbye” was showing on TV.
Aye well, so here’s my post run write up based on the Sound of Music’s “Favourite Things”. With apologies to Oscar and Hammerstein… And other people who post run will also be dead by morning…

As the runners arrived at KB last night, the bar became filled with a plethora of light shows, with LED body cover, skin suits and even Freddie Mercury and his hoover.
34 runners set off and most completed the 13 mile route, with a few joiners en route we got to 40 runners at one point.
