Race Director Report | On the Wednesday before the race, a hire company called to say they couldn’t deliver the 60 parking field mats we had requested…
By Thursday evening, we still hadn’t heard from the First Aid team… Changes to grazing over the year meant that Leg 2 was (more than) a bit rougher than previously expected… As always, when organising an event with so many moving parts, there are some last minute scrambles, but thankfully matting was sourced (and the parking team orchestrated the parking field with military precision) and the first aiders were found. Leg 2 was carefully flagged and enjoyed, on the whole, by all. Then, thanks to some torrential downpours overnight, the event field was a bit wetter than we had expected, which made for some exciting pushing at the end of the day and a last minute call for old carpet belonging to club members to aid in the catering tent not becoming a quagmire. Other than that, the whole event went off without a hitch. The organising team would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all of the volunteers, runners, and locals who made the event what it was. There were over 120 volunteers from Carnethy HRC as well as HBT and other local clubs who helped marshal the courses, reconfigure the start/finish area after every leg, put up the marquees, sweep the fields for rubbish (very little!) at the end of the event and help get 300 cars in and out of the parking field. We are extremely grateful for so many people car sharing, bringing minibuses and, in the case of a couple of clubs, 50 seater coaches! In addition, people bringing their own cups, plates, crockery was really good to see. Last but by no means least, we would like to thank the landowners and suppliers who made it all possible: Jemima Elliot whose farm encompasses a lot of the courses was essential to the running of the event and her enthusiasm for the event kept us smiling the whole day. We are also grateful for the forbearance of Michael Elliot, whose cottage was surrounded by runners for the day! Stobo Estate, Alan Warnock, Clover Hill Farm, and Stirkfield farm also kindly let runners cross their land and even supplied hay bales for some fence crossings. Andrew Dunlop at Corstane Farm who supplied the parking field and did a lot of work to keep it dry and easy to access for runners. The marquees, PA, and the catering were all supplied by John Duncan, who also happens to be race director of the Highland Fling race – a great ultra that you should all run! John was on-site for almost 72 hours straight and had to rescue the final marquee from blowing away in high winds in the early hours of Sunday morning! Top Out Brewery, who were serving beers at the event, and the ever-brilliant and always needed Pete Bland Sports supplied the race prizes. We hope you enjoyed the additional catering by Brew 52 and Turnip the Beet who, despite poor connectivity for card payments, had a wonderful time keeping you all warm and well-fed. And, of course, final thanks to our tireless piper, who I hope can still hear after 8 hours of solid piping! It’ll be a while before this organising team will have recovered enough to organise something on this scale again, but we’d love to hear your feedback on what could have been better or what you really enjoyed: carnethyrelays2022@gmail.com |
