Don Morrison Memorial Edale Skyline Fell Race March 23rd 21 miles 4500 ft
The conditions were ideal for Sunday's Edale Skyline race, the day was sunny with a clear blue sky and a cool breeze on the tops, and the running was made easy as the ground was bone dry almost all the way. Measures to reduce erosion required a diversion of the route into the Vale of Edale between the south and north skylines, so adding an extra climb up 'Jacobs Ladder' on the Pennine Way for the first time this year.
An excellent run by Sally Newman of Calder Valley gave her first place in the ladies race, with Helen Diamantedes (Carnethy) finishing 2nd, while Jill Tait (Carnethy), finished 4th - fresh from her run at Chapelgill the day before.
    Willie Mykura was 9th V40.

    Organisers Report :
Another great race, with a free beer bottle for those waiting for the prizegiving, thanks to sponsorship from Sulwath Brewers, who make Criffel Ale (among others). The weather was superb, hazy sunshine and resulted in a good turnout of 62 for 2003. Thanks go to Westies, Solway and others, including Moffat Mountain Rescue for turning out in strength and assisting. The race had 61 finishers, and one DNF (sprained ankle).
Thanks to all for a superb day, and don't forget Screel is at the beginning of April if you are doing the "Dumfries and Galloway Hillrunning" Series

    Chapelgill Hill Race
    Fun Run Report:

On a glorious Spring afternoon 4 of the Carnethy juniors entered the Chappelgill Fun Run near Broughton. Scott (9) and Kirsty (6) Cameron were joined by Jake (9) and Ellie (7?) Gray. Like the senior race it was a straight up and down.
There were over 20 entries with 2 Lothian Juniors finishing strongly in the top 2 places. Jake was not far behind in 4th place. Ellie came in in front of Kirsty who beat her brother who had a stitch--or at least that was his excuse.
For 10p they each got a juice, chocolate bar and official certificate. OAPs could enter for half price with no SAL supplement but Bill Gauld declined and just watched along with rest of us.
A good race was followed by a play in the burn whilst the senior race took place.

    Senior Race:
Carnethy did well at Chapelgill, with Angela getting a new ladies record, Adam Ward winning 1st V40, JBF first V50 and Keith Burns winning 1st V60.

Crow Moon Night Run - Bonaly
Crow Moon ? , more like No Moon!
There was a good turn out of about 16 members for the last night run of the season. Unfortunately the Moon forgot that the run was on and turned up as we left the pub.
It was dark at the start but that was no excuse for Nigel as he donned his new Carnethy pertex and wondered what the nose bag at the front was for. Then we headed of for the top of Capelaw with a few headlights still appearing (I herded up the late-comers and tried to catch up). Once we reached the summit we headed off at 10 second intervals to find the concealed cairn on the south side of Capelaw. We had the traditional photo at the cairn and then we traversed to Maidens Cleugh where Colin fell in to a bog and being in a rush managed to leave Nigel and Bill behind (rumours that Nigel's hood blew up over his face leaving him thinking that he had run into yellow cloud were unfounded), but after running off Harbour Hill and back to the car park we found the lost souls alive and well.
Nigel is never backwards in running forwards. The top of Capelaw
Then it was off to the Spylaw Inn where we partook of a very welcome feed.
Thanks to Colin Pritchard for organising the event.

Irish Mountain Running Association: Championship Races
Two Carnethy members competed in two IMRA races at the weekend in Donegal, Ireland. Glorious weather and spectacular scenery made these two very enjoyable races.

Saturday 16th March: Glengesh Horseshoe Race.
This was a 5.6km course with 370m ascent/descent over some rough boggy terrain. Some aspects of the descent included 4-6ft drops into large knee-deep peat bogs (loads of fun). Geraint Florida-James was first Carnethy member (34:40 min) and 3rd overall behind World Masters Champion, Robin Bryson (31:58) who won the race. Rickie Simpson was 2nd Carnethy member and 6th overall with a time of 40:05 min. Soon to be Carnethy member, Susan Gray, had a very good run finishing 3rd lady and 12th overall (48:35).
    There were 27 finishers.
    1st: Robin Bryson (Newcastle AC) M40 - 31:58
    2nd: Paul Nolan (GEN-DSD) M - 32:14
    3rd: Geraint Florida-James (Carnethy HRC) M - 34:40
    6th: Rickie Simpson (Carnethy HRC) M - 40:05

Sunday 17th March: Errigal uphill only
This was the first race in The King of the Mountain series, which took in the peak of Mackoght before finishing at the top of Errigal mountain (3.7km 660m). After an initial trample through some good old boggy terrain, the short rocky descent off Mackoght took you straight on to the CLIMB! Finishing at the top of Errigal and admiring the awesome view of the Donegal mountains made all the hard efforts worthwhile. Despite the hangovers, both Carnethy members managed to complete the race (and actually ran better than the day before).
    There were 30 finishers.
    1st: Robin Bryson (Newcastle AC) M40 - 31:38
    2nd: Paul Nolan (GEN-DSD) M - 32:10
    3rd: Geraint Florida-James (Carnethy HRC) M - 33:19
    5th: Rickie Simpson (Carnethy HRC) M - 39:50
More details of these races can be found at http://www.iol.ie/~imra/
If anyone fancies competing in these races next year contact Geraint Florida-James.

    Inverness Half Marathon
Although I too would have rather have been running over the hills on Sunday, a whole winter's road training dictated that Inverness just had to be done.
I can highly recommend Tracy Brindley as a coach (although she probably won't be recommending me as a pupil - I was supposed to run 1.15.00)!
The weather was excellent, the course was fast, the sharp end was very keenly contested (apart from Mr Pryde), and I was first (and I think only?) Carnethy - that's as long as you don't count those that run on the roads for other clubs. I think Lars and Andy L. also ran but I cant find them in the results!
    Relevant results:
    6th: Ray Ward (C.O.E)- 1.12.57
    15th: Garry MacInnes (Carnethy) - 1.16.10
    17th: Adam Ward (C.O.E) - 1.16.19
    23rd: Alec Keith (HBT) - 1.17.36
    33rd: Keith Broadfoot (C.O.E) - 1.18.28

Borders Winter Cross Country Series, Race 6: Galashiels 16th March
The final race of the series was a short 4 miler through the forest fields above Gala, with not too much climb and very little mud on a dry course. The race was won by Keith Lyall of City of Edinburgh in 22.34. Jill Tait finished first lady in 20th place (25.39), and so won the overall ladies championship and ladies senior trophy, running for Athletics Club Eyemouth.
Marbeth Shiell was 3th senior lady (27.40) and 4th in the series, running for Carnethy.
Willie Mykura was 6th vet (25.00) and also 6th vet in the series.
Other Carnethy participants in this well organised but low-key series were Paul Morris and Dougie Shiell.
A good series for a Carnethy challenge on the team title next year?

    Wuthering Hike
The Scots did well at yesterdays Wuthering Hike in Haworth. The race started in a slight mist and a cool breeze at 8am, the weather slowly improved and by midday was bright sunshine. The 31 mile race takes you over moor and tracks through Bronte Country and visits Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall on the way. The hotdogs available en route were very welcome.
Kate Jenkins was first lady in a record time of 4:28
Willie Gibson and Moira Stewart were firt mixed couple in 5:17.
Duncan Baker and Brian Howie did 5:10.
Don Naylor of HBT won the race in 4:08.

Glentress Duathlon Last Race in Series
On Sunday, over 70 people competed in the last (the long race) of the 3-race series. Several Carnethy showed their prowess on two wheels as well as two legs. Stuart Whitlie was 6th on the day and Lyn Wilson was 21st finisher and 1st lady. Geraint Florida-James (9th) and Gary MacInnes (12th) also performed well and if you look at the Hub in the Forest's web site you'll see which other Carnethy runners possess mountain bikes and enjoy a bit of cross-training! Mountain-biking at Glentress is certainly one of the things you must try before you're XX!!

Borders Winter Cross Country Series, Race 5: St Abb's Head
The fifth (and best!!) race of the winter series was hosted by Athletics Club Eyemouth. This cracking wee hilly course starts close to the scenic St Abbs Head and runs over a course estimated at 4 miles. The weather held fair on Sunday with a strong head wind in places. There were a few familiar faces within the 55 competitors with a very strong performance by Marbeth Shiell swooping in ahead of many senior runners (second lady, finishing 24th overall in 30.50).
The race was won by Andy Kitchen of Lothian in a time of 25.14, followed by Michael McGovern of Moorfoots in 25.35.
Other Carnethies running the penultimate race of the series were Willie Mykura (29.17), Jill Tait (29.24, first lady) and Dougie Shiell (37.30).
The last race is at Gala in just under 2 weeks on Sunday 16th March.

    Carnethy 5 Quiz - Results
A grand total of 3 (yes, three!) sets of answers were received in response to the Carnethy 5 quiz, which was included in the Carnethy 5 2003 Race Programme for 15 February. 460 folk had completed the race. Hill runners would appear to be rather more interested in hill running than in doing quizzes about hill running - notwithstanding that the prize on offer was advertised as being "valuable" and "worth winning"!
John Blair-Fish (Carnethy), quick off the mark with his entry, looked like having the field entirely to himself; but last gasp submissions by Margaret Forrest (Carnethy) and Fabienne Thompson (Carnegie) deprived JBF of a guaranteed gold medal place. In the event, no one got all the answers that were being sought - though they all did very well. It has therefore been decided to split the prize three ways - so that "Everyone's a winner".
Well done John, Margaret and Fabienne.
So, with the prize going three ways, JBF gets free entry to next year's Carnethy 5 race, Margaret gets a commemorative Carnethy race T-shirt, and Fabienne gets a Tiso voucher.

    Thirlestane Castle Cross-Country
On Sunday 85 'hard-core' cross-country runners set off over the new course set by Lauderdale. This race was the third of the winter series set over 6 different venues and organised by Borders clubs. The boggy route took in part of the Southern Upland Way and two hunt jumps required negotiating before the course skirted beside a section of the Scottish Championship horse trials course. Some people could have used a horse, including Jill Tait who fell into a section of river she had tried to jump. The course was approximately 4 miles, but the heavy going made this seem like further. The last stages of the race ran past the doors of the castle, with a nice gentle slope to the finish. Awesome. The next race in the series is at Dunbar on 9th February.
The race was won by John Wilkinson of Lauder in 26.20, with Keith Lyall of City of Edinburgh runner up in 26.27.
    Carnethies spotted in action were:
    Paul Morris (31.23, 11th Vet)
    Willie Mykura (30.11, 8th Vet)
    Jill Tait (30.05, 1st Lady)
    Marbeth Shiell (36.37, 8th Lady)

The Carnethy Ladies dominated the East District Cross-Country Champs, held over two laps on a frozen but hilly course on Corstorphine Hill.
