THE CLUB PUB RUN (by Willie Gibson)
It was 7pm when the 10 of us headed from KB to the Braidburn. Alex (Ginger)
Jackson got accosted as he happened to be on our route. From the Braidburn
we meandered to The Robins Nest where Jamie Thin had to give up drinking
as 2 half pints were too much for him (more training required). Then it was
the Northfield and then on to The Marmion. Some lads were shouting good natured
abuse at us running by until they saw where we were going "My god, They
are running to the pub!". We left the Marmion and 59 seconds later discovered
The Waverley, a hitherto unknown pub to all of us. Then it was on to the
The Old Bordeaux where we bought a bottle of Bordeaux. Across the fields
and on to The Stable Bar, Lyn (half pint) Wilson had been going strongly
till then but it was all too much for her so along with Jamie they headed
for home. The rest of us headed for The Balmwell and then to the Liberton
Inn, before running back to KB for a couple of pints, and mincemeat pies
(thanks to Bill Gauld).
Well Done to all : Moira Stewart, Cali Ingham, Lyn Wilson, Bill Gauld, Jamie
Thin, Gordon Cameron, Duncan Baker, Russell Stout, Nick Macdonald and Willie
Gibson.
Many thanks to Nick for the Route and the song which you can see if you click HERE

THE CHRISTMAS WARM UP PARTY AT MOIRA'S
We started with an interesting run round the old railway lines of Trinity
and a jog to the end of Granton breakwater Paula cut the run short
and got lost (there were no helicopters about to help!). Then a good
party time was had by all.
Many thanks to Moira for all her work

THE WINTER ESKAPADE (Willie Gibson)
A group of over 20 explorers managed to trace the North Esk from its mouth
in Musselburgh to is source above Carlops. The expedition took about 8 hours
and throughout the journey we had to overcome many obstacles ; bridges, walls,
barbed wire, ice and many river crossings. But the bacon rolls at the Royal
Hotel in Penicuik fortified us en-route and the meal (and coal fire) at The
Allan Ramsay in Carlops ended a wonderful 27 mile day.

Club Run on 13th December
The Carnethy club run coincidentaly crossed paths with Paula Drouet's Hash
run on the Craiglockharts. This led to various greetings and great confusion.
A group of lagging hashers almost followed us but one of them said "They
are Serious Runners". I have never been called a serious runner before!
Jamie Thin and Anne Nimmo got led astray by the hashers as runners were heading
in all directions around the hill, but we managed to regroup.
Next weeks run will be the Club Pub run from KB.

THE NIGHT RUN
On a glorious moonlit evening some twenty-odd runners louped across the Pentlands
on the third night run of the winter series. The ranks of the Carnethy faithful
were swelled by the addition of two Swedish lasses, Camilla and Magdalena
and Howard Chambers up from Manchester.
Whilst some came from afar afield, at least one kept going when he arrived,
as Gordon continued beyond the road and left his car with two wheels in a
ditch. With customary disregard the car was abandoned until after the run.
With 2 rendezvous points for the runners, the run started some 20 minutes
late but this gave the moon time to rise above the trees and bathe the hills
in a silvery glow as we trotted up over Woodhouselee and picked up the trod
which hugged the high contours of the hill before dipping down to the bealach
between Allermuir and Capelaw Hill. From up on the ridge we looked down upon
a carpet of glittering lights as Edinburgh and Fife lay on display. Then
down into the darkness of the valley before regrouping for the climb up Harbour
Hill, swinging from the path and picking our way over the tussocks to the
indistinct summit.
Then the dash downhill towards Glencorse and right down into the valley.
Here, Nick, Willie G, Willie M and Gordon swung downstream, wading knee deep
in sections before swinging up the flank of Castlelaw and onto the broad
track that ran round the foot of the hill. Quickly joined by Alan H, they
waited whilst the rest clambered over tussocks and gorse, emulating the American
elections with their squabbling over Gore and Bush. Unlike said
election, however, soon all were accounted for and we traipsed along the
wet and muddy track, plashing in puddles and plodding through the plowter
up to Castlelaw Farm.
From there we crossed the road and swung right along the track running parallel
with the dry-stone dyke until we dropped down across the fields and back
to the start observing the usual phenomenon that the nearer you get to the
finish, the muddier it (and you) gets.Back at the finish a rope and some
wooden blocks (logs not the Carnethy lads and lasses) rescued Gordons
car and it was off to the Flotterstone Inn for a slap up meal and a few beers. Our
thanks to Cali Ingham for her organisation and hospitality

Fife Coastal Path Run
Seven Carnethy stalwarts set off from Jim & Janet's house in Kinghorn
for the two day run to St Andrews. The heavy drizzle was not enough to dampen
their spirits. Fortunately the weather stayed dry by the time they reached
Kirkcaldy. They travelled through picturesque fishing villages and the docks
at Methil. Later they were joined by Bill, who was part supporting and part
running. An hotel stop was made at Lower Largo for lunch, before running
on through the East Neuk villages. Dusk overtook the merry band so the last
hour to Anstruther was travelled in complete darkness. Descending steep slippery
paths towards the sound of waves breaking on the rocks below enlivened the
proceedings.
The party stopped at a comfortable B&B for the night, with an excellent
pub next door. The pub was also the scene of some serious rehydration. The
next day dawned bright and sunny. Once more the party set forth, fortified
by heavy-metal breakfasts. Two more runners joined for day's proceedings.
Beyond Fife Ness, signposts warned of "hazardous paths". This was
not enough to deter our heroes, in spite of deep mud, slippery paths and
a river wading. Even the attempts of local golfers to hit the party with
golf balls was not enough to deter progress. The gallant band reached St
Andrews by mid afternoon and headed for the nearest hotel for hot tea and
biscuits. It was the successful conclusion of a forty mile run.
Many thanks to Jim McWhinnie for organising the weekend and to Bill Gauld
for supporting

Night Run
It was slightly wet at the start, but 14 stalwarts had a good run over Allermuir
Capelaw and Caerketton.
The start was held up slightly by the organiser(Nick) sheltering in the pub
and not noticing that 13 people were waiting outside for him!
The next night run is on 6th December.
Remember our Club Runs are every Wednesday night except when the night runs
are on!

NOT the KIMM
Whilst several pairs of Carnethy stalwarts languished in the Lakes in a rain
swept KIMM thirteen disciples of another discipline headed off to Glencoe
for the traditional "Not-the Karrimor" weekend.
After a night in the Kingshouse of ale and anecdote, dinner and drams the
plethora of plans had been distilled into two- Aonach Eagach, if the weather
was right, or up Aonach Dubh a Ghlinne and Sgor na h-Ulaidh with a sneak
attack on Bidean nam Bian on the way back. Whilst Colin Pritchard and Russell
Stout headed off to do the latter, Nick Macdonald and Steve Rawson led the
main party up and along the ridge.
Delight and dismay followed when the party got to the 'airy, hairy and scary'
bits with some perching on pinnacles with their hands in their pockets whilst
others hung on with fingers-and cheeks-clenched. Some admiring the view,
others steadfastly not admiring any view but looking where they were putting
their hands and feet only. But all survived to relive the memories over tea
in the Clachaig.
The following day was wild, wet and wintry, with winds gusting to 80 miles
an hour so nothing too high or far was called for. So everyone headed up
over the Devil's Staircase and over Beinn Bheag to visit the old Dam Workers
Graveyard below Blackwater Reservoir dam, then back over the col between
Beinn a Chrulaiste and Meall Bhalach for a glorious-if waterlogged and muddy-descent
back to the Kingshouse.

A regular international race run for the last 20 years. This was used as

route from start to finish but take the easiest route with as many vantage
points for spectators.
