    TWO BUACHAILLES HILL RACE
Carnethy did well at the Two Buachailles Hill Race on Saturday with John Coyle (on his stag weekend) coming 3rd. Andy Spenceley was 5th, Willie Gibson was 8th and Kate Jenkins was 11th and 1st Lady.
Carnethy would have won 1st team but when Dick found out he decided not to award a prize and that's how the fight started.

    CAPITAL CITY CHALLENGE 10K
The race had Scottish Championship status this year (not in the hill race champs - the Cowgate's not quite steep enough!!) which boosted the quality at the front end, and the numbers overall had increased dramatically from last year, nearly 5000 entries.
Conditions were good for fast running, dry with a cool breeze.
Tracey Brindley finished 2nd in the womens race in a new pb of 34.32.
First Carnethy (running for City of Edinburgh!) was Mark Johnston in 33.24, followed closely by Andy Laycock, Rupert, Gordon, Emer, Steve, Kirsty, Margaret and probably lots more Carnethy folk.
Full results will appear in the Evening News on 24th September (Tuesday).

    Lake District Mountain Trial
Carnethy had a minimal presence at the 50th Lake District Mountain Trial. The start and finish was from Buttermere Youth Hostel to celebrate the first three trials organised by the YHA. The courses were taxing with many route options contouring over loose screen, slippery boulders, and high bracken around the Newlands valley. Alex Menary found he could not keep the pace and dropped out at check point four. John Blair-Fish thought he was surviving the rigours of the course and on target for the fastest over 50 when he was led astray by Joss Naylor both round and back over an extra hill, Dale Head, en route to the tenth and penultimate last checkpoint. Unlike the previous day there was plenty of deceptive mist on the tops.

    THIRLSTANE CASTLE CROSS COUNTRY 15.9.02
As if the two Breweries was not enough, I returned to this superb friendly event in the beautiful grounds of Thirlstane castle in Lauder for the 5 mile fast race over estate tracks, woods and fields, under the disguise of a Gala Harrier. Determined to win the trophy back, having had to drive it there, I put every last bit of me into the hot extended sprint and came bounding
through the long grass at the end in first place, trailing just behind Chris all the way. Four Breweries folk made it and all had good runs!

    SALAMON X ADVENTURE RACE
Anyone for a game of golf?
What could be worse? Setting off from a dark and wet Glencoe ski station for 36 hours of immense mountain biking, sheer faced abseiling, crazy canyoning, tidal open canoeing, scary scrambling, and, boggy hill running or .....a never ending paddle up Loch Etive accompanied by the stereophonic tones of our own Mr. Thin and Coyle? For the 40 teams who made up the Salomon X adventure race they would have had another 36 hours any day.
Coylie and Jamie's team were 5th.

" A hot and sunnny day up in Elgin saw the marathon, half marathon and 10km races off on Sunday morning. The marathon began an hour and a half early which meant that we caught up with the Half later rather than runing alone. Pleased to say that this was my 5th Victory, but I still haven't got 3 hours at Moray! Still, better than dropping out like last year! Amused to see that Mark Rigby, Jenny Rae and myself scooped a large proportion of the trophies, 10 year old McCallan whisky and generous vouchers!"

    Lomonds of Fife
After last year's unusually soggy conditions, this year's Lomonds of Fife race was back to its usual warm and largely sunny self. There was a good turn out of 56 runners, with the field being led off by Morgan Donnelly, Tim Lenton and our own Lars Ottemoller, running on his local hills. The first two broke away on the descent off West Lomond, with Morgan Donnelly gradually easing away from Tim to produce a winning margin of 90 seconds. Lars ran superbly and beat off a double Fife challenge – in the form of Dave Weir and Chris – to finish in third place. Brad had a pretty good race, running along in 6th place, until lack of recent race practice saw him implode at the base of the final climb up West Lomond. Thankfully he managed to utilise the fabulous bumslide of a descent to scream past one of the two runners who had swept past his semi-prone body on the uphill, and came in 7th. Mark Higginbottom completed the team of three by finishing tenth – in a race somewhat shorter than his epic long-distance outings of late – and JBF came in in an impressive 14th. There was some contention over the team prize: both Fife and Carnethy had 20 pts, with the Fife’s placings being 4th, 5th and 11th against our 3rd, 7th and 10th, but unusually the organisers ignored the facts that a) our first guy was ahead of Fife’s first guy, and b) our third counter finished ahead of their third counter, choosing instead to use cumulative time (3:44 against 3:45) as the deciding factor. If you’re going to use placings as your first choice criteria, it seems to me that you should also use it as your second choice criteria – but, hey, it’s only beer. Damn!!! A most enjoyable race, nevertheless: well organised, marshalled, and with lots of tea and buns at the end.

Angela Mudge wins in Susa, Italy
Angela continued her winning ways at the weekend by beating the current WMR Grand Prix holder, Isabella Zatorska and world champion, Melissa Moon, to win the WMR Grand Prix race in Susa, Italy. She recorded the third fastest time ever which is good news for the Scottish team competing in the World Trophy in Innsbruck in 3 weeks. The men's race was won by New Zealander, Jonathan Wyatt, who was 5th in the Commonwealth Games marathon in Manchester.

Angela Mudge beat all but 8 men and finished 16 minutes in front of the next women when breaking the record by 8 minutes in the Inferno Half Marathon in Murren, Switzerland on the 17th August.
This race - over the half marathon distance - involves a climb of 2200m / 7250 ft and finishes on the summit of the Schilthorn mountain at 2970m / 9750ft which featured in the James Bond film - On Her Majesty's Secret Service with George Lazenby and is probably the most spectacular finish to a race anywhere in the world.
Adam was a bit slower and stopped to enjoy the views of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau on the way up before enjoying a beer in the revolving restaurant at the summit!
Chris Davies warmed up by climbing the Jungfrau a few days before - obviously good acclimatisation!

Heart of Granite - 17th August
This event (20 miles; 6,400ft ascent) goes round some remote parts of the Galloway Hills. Those who have done the KIMM hereabouts will be familiar with the trackless & deep tussocky terrain. The route takes in several summits, but not the Merrick. It is fairly arduous and slow going, with not a lot of scope for free wheeling running at speed. Good navigation skills are very helpful. An alternative, concurrent, event is the 42 mile Bruce's Crown for anyone wanting a BIGGER challenge. Both races start together and follow the same route before splitting in different directions. The winner in HoG did 6 hours 30 mins - I told you it was slow going. I came in 3rd in 6:38, but failed to find a checkpoint located "near" the penultimate summit - so got disqualified. At least I didn't finish first, and have my moment of glory dashed!

Kielder Borderer Fell Race - 4 August
If you enjoy the trackless dense heathery bits, interspersed with the deep boggy moss covered bits, on Black Hill (Pentland Skyline race), you should give this fell race a go. Much of it is on this kind of terrain. As a bonus, it follows the Scotland / England border for a few "middle of nowhere" miles - so you can choose which country to run in. I tended to run with the right foot landing in Scotland, the left in England - which suited the direction of travel. Both countries were equally heathery and boggy. The race (17 miles; 3,000ft ascent)is part of the Kielder Festival weekend - Red Arrows display; face painting; wood turning demonstrations; jazz bands etc etc; something for all the family. A pity there were not more participants (only 21) in the race, given all the work that had been done by the organisers. ("Too arduous", seemed to be the main reason.) Everyone involved in the event was really welcoming, though with the deluge of rain during the past week, the record time of 2:35 was nowhere near being under threat. In summary - definitely worth doing; England's wet version of the Pentland Skyline race.

Record turnout at North Berwick Law
Last night's race from North Berwick harbour to the top of the Law and back, 3 miles and 600 ft ascent, had a record entry of 165. The town's relaxed, holiday atmosphere, sunny weather and the commendable large number of junior and Carnethy runners leant to a very enjoyable evening. Karen Powell just beat Jill Tait to win the ladies' event. Adam Ward was first male vet and 4th overall, while Hilary Spenceley was first female vet. Tracey wins at Snowdon
Jill Tait Writes "Race conditions were warm and muggy as around 400 (International and Open event) athletes crowded the start line in a small field dotted with stands selling jumble, a fairground ride (the tea cups!) a small demonstration climbing wall and a burger stand (the food of athletes?!).
After the gun and some pushing (have been told vet men are the culprits!) we ran out of the field and onto the road, rounding a tight corner and a false sense of security - flat tarmac to favour the road runner.
Those who set off too fast soon pay the price as grit and determination is required to get to the summit which is 'runnable' all the way on the 'motorway path'. Tight crocodile paths of walkers made coming down slightly hazardous.
The leading men and ladies made quick work of the descent. One of the English girls (Sarah Carson) had a nasty tumble resulting in a bust jaw and fractured arm.
Storming ahead of the train, first man back was Welshman Tim Davies, with the leading lady Carnethy's Tracey Brindley, in some fast times." Ladies

    Carnethy runners help scientific research
Geraint Florida-James's students at Napier University gave their research findings to an interested bunch of hopefuls tonight. Fiona found that caffeine did not stimulate her Carnethy guinea-pigs to run faster or longer - presumably they were already saturated with the stuff. Mark confirmed that our top hill runners could still beat elite track athletes down a hill - but they appeared to be a bit fatter than them! (or was it just older?) and finally Ricky gave an excellent presentation on physiological testing on two elite squads of the British Army. One test involved running 2 miles on a road in army boots carrying 20kg packs at 7 minutes per mile pace. It's not surprising only 2 in 50 hopefuls are accepted into these units!

The race of Chevy Chase was run from Wooler Youth Hostel on Saturday 6th July 2002. 20 miles. 4,000ft.
As far as I am aware, nobody was killed or injured, although the course was reasonably demanding.
So that the slightly quicker runners have some moving targets to chase down, they give the slower B-class runners a half hour head start on the 'elite' A-class hill athletes. There are also hordes of walkers bumbling along on the same route, who start 1½ hours before A-class, making you feel like some sort of superstar as you belt past them.
Anyway, the route follows good trails up onto Cheviot. Steep descent through a V-valley. Then up onto Hedgehope Hill. Long upland section before you drop to follow a river through nettles and tricky rocky boggy bits. Then back up a steep forest track and back the 2 miles of track and tarmac you started on.
I managed to hold onto 5th place until about three quarters of the way round, but then started to flag.
I perhaps went at it too enthusiatically on the Cheviot and Hedgehope climbs, and was closed down gradually as I couldn't keep the pace going for the last 3 miles.
A bit frustrated to lose places near the end, I looked at my watch coming down the hill to Wooler and realised I could at least get in under 3:15 if I made a bit of effort, so I sprinted down the final lane and into the Youth Hostel grounds with 3 seconds to spare.
Kate came storming in, easily taking 1st Lady, about 5 minutes later.

Tracey breaks record on North Cape Dollar Hill Race (9 miles /3000 feet)
Tracey Brindley took over 3 minutes off the course record at Dollar on Saturday despite the thick mist and boggy ground, finishing in 1:29. Jill Tait was second in 1:41 followed closely by Jane Robertson. The Carnethy men weren't to be outdone and won the team prize with Lars Ottemoller 5th (1:25), Mark Johnston 6th (1:25) and Mark Higginbottom 8th (1:26). The race was won by Andy Liston in 1:22, who benefitted from the leading four men going astray on Andrew Gannel. John Blair-Fish was first vet O-50 in 1:35. Andrew Lennie, Willie Mykura and Duncan Baker also managed to find their way round safely. Runners had to avoid an extra hazard this year, two buzzards were diving at runners in the field at the foot of Dollar Bank. One Carnegie runner finished with blood pouring from a wound on his head. Who said hillrunning wasn't an adventurous sport? Thanks to the Ochil Hillrunners for an excellent race and great cakes afterwards. Full results coming soon! Mark Johnston
