Festive Run and Club Xmas Party
Willie Gibson led a quick and icy foray up over Castle
Law before a fast descent through frosty grass to Moira Stewart's
where the oven was on. Michael O'Connor, testing out his legs, won the
unofficial Osram prize for the most glaring headtorch. Offical prizes
were (not)
presented to Steven Fallon who took the
Club Championship, Colin and Joan Wilson were awarded the Burns Scott
Trophy (for raising the profile of the club while completing their Anniversary
Waltz), Es Tresidder (currrently in Chamonix) got the Scald Law Prize
for athletic achievement (an amazing Cuillin Traverse record) and Jonathan
Hogg won the Junior Trophy for his achievements in the club handicaps.
And meantime, smashing food and hospitality, a great club turnout.
Thanks to Moira and Cali for hosting and organising an excellent party.

More Breaking News
As the Christmas party got underway worrying news came
in that Keith Burns was back in the Royal after a biking accident after
coming off on ice in the Lake District and breaking his hip, which now
is pinned
together. Seems this time he was unable to get away with 'it's just
a sprain', and Barbel
put her foot down, literally. Here's hoping that
it gets fixed quickly.
All best wishes, our thoughts
to you both.

Falkland Trail Race - Saturday 15th December
The Falkland Trail Race this year over-run
by Team Santa, with their distinctive red and white running appareil.
The route was six miles
there and back on some of the forest tracks used for leg 4 of the
Devil’s Burdens relay. Fife AC provided plenty of soup and cakes
in a desperate attempt to fatten up the skinniest bunch of Santas
you are likely to come across.
Carnethies spotted were Jon Ascroft,
Steven Hibbert & new club
signing Tim Darlow (curiously absent from the results). Photos
here . Other Carnethies running were Lars Ottermoller (in a
superb 2nd place) and Brian Howie, but both were running for their
other club !

Eskapade - Sunday 16th December
The annual Esk run was
supported by a record number of Club Members. 18 did the whole thing
and there were 38 doing parts of it, or 41 if you include the ones
that
turned up just for the food.
Great weather led to a great day.
Thanks
to Irene Schierloh and Donald Mitchell for the transport.

Borders Cross Country Series - Galashiels- Sunday 16th December
The third instalment of the Borders Cross
Country Series took place in Galashiels in near perfect conditions
- calm, bright and firm underfoot,
with the cool temperature giving a good incentive to run that little
bit faster. Through forest trails and across sloping fields, the crisp
conditions and firm ground made for fast running. The course had a
number of hilly sections, with some nice sweeping downhill sections
through
grassy fields in the second half. Didn't see any other Carnethy
vests running but did meet Willie Mykura at the finish. The next instalment
is at Peebles on 6th January - in good time to help work off any seasonal
excesses. Details and results (soon).

Club Video night
Photos: Hot aches productions and BBC website
Over 30 people turned up to the club
video night to watch another amazing program put together by master
presenter, William Mykura ! From watching Es holding the biggest
microphone anyone had ever seen at start of his Cuillin ridge traverse;
to boats
getting tossed around at the Scottish islands Peaks race;
some Austrian nutter (Markus Stoekl) going downhill at 210 kph on
an "off
the peg"
mountain
bike (link);
Carnethy members messing around in boats on the Spey - eat your
heart out Jerome K Jerome; a great film of Ian
Holmes giving a display of how to win the Ben race with Angela Mudge
as co-star and a superb and surreal slide show of a surreal JBF
running down the Paps of Jura to the sound of a full scale orchestra
(thanks
to camera-man Michael O'Connor), it was action all the way.

Lyn dominates the East
Lyn Wilson showed that Angela isn't the only Carnethy runner
on form by continuing her very impressive series of results on the
country this winter with a superb win in the East District Cross-Country
Champs at Stirling University. Lyn, who is really making a name
for herself this winter, easily won by over half a minute to beat
a strong
field of 115. So, congratulations,
Lyn
!
The only other runner running
for
Carnethy,
and
someone
who has also been
running
well on
the country
this winter,
was Jacqui Higginbottom in 30th, though others were running for
their

Angela breaks record
at Everest Marathon
Photo: courtesy Kath Turner on the
sleepmonsters website
Angela Mudge was the first lady home setting
a new record time of 5:2:17, knocking 14 mins off the old
record, and finishing in amazing 8th place ! The only non-Nepali
runner
ahead of here was another British runner, Craig Mattocks,
who finished in 5th position in a time of 4:54:01. The winner
was
local
runner
Lok
Bahadur Rokaya in 4.12.21, which was 20 minutes ahead
of second place, Karma Rita Sherpa in 4.32.51. Unsurprisingly,
apart from Craig and Angela, Nepalese runners filled the other
top 10 places. Angela
didn't have it all her own way however as two Nepalese women
were not far back finishing in 5:17:53, for the 3rd and 4th
fastest times ever.
Two other Carnethy members took part. Helen Murray
finished in 53rd place in 8:32:30, while Adrian Davis was obviously
having problems as did not finish (though he has finished twice
before). The report by Kath Turner from the sleepmonsters
web site, titled Through
the Storm to a Perfect Race Day,
says... "Adrian
Davies was helped down the Tengboche path and up the Sarnassa
hill by
2
six year
old children, holding
his hand and pulling him up the hill"!! The full story will no doubt
come out.

The 33rd Cauldstane Slap
Don't you just love those races where you win a random prize
such as a 'Belbake' maderia cake and then go home with a
smile on your face with the maderia cake safely perched on
its own
on the passenger seat to keep you company! The Cauldstane
Slap is a fantastically friendly handicap race near West Linton
that starts at Baddinsgill
Farm to The Cauldstane Slap (between East Cairn Hill and
West
Cairn
Hill).
Quite wet and boggy under foot on Sunday but no rain or wind.
The race was won by Megan Mowbray (HBT) with a time of 41:34.
Phil
Mowbray
had
the fastest
time of 34.01. Well done to Debbie MacDonald for the fantastic

Glentress Duathlon - Medium
Race
There was a strong Carnethy presence at the first Glentress Duathlon
of the series.
Adam Ward was first over 40 in 7th, Bob Waterhouse
was first over 50 and Cali Ingam was first over 50 female.
Other Carenthies included Lars Ottemoller in 6th; Jon Ascroft
having
a great debut in the event in 10th; Adam Anderson just nipping
Andrew
Patience
in
16th and
17th after Andrew had had a superb cycle; Garry MacInnes,
Olly Stephenson, Keith Adams, & Willie Gibson.
It
was a fast, if a little muddy, course. Lots of bikes ended
up off the track, our own Kate Friend suffered an ankle injury
on the bike.
A great time was had by all, with the exception of Kate perhaps..

Borders XC - Dunbar
A huge turnout at the 2nd race of the
series, at Dunbar . The race started across the sand dunes
and then along the beach for
a mile or so, scrambling to find the firm sand and avoid the
soggy bits – luckily the tide was out. A river crossing
at the half way point froze the toes, then we turned into a
pine wood for a twisting-turning run to the finish. It was
tough maintaining
the pace on the flat course with soft footing, but the lovely
weather made it fun. And this time we had a team - Graeme Carracher,
Peter Walker and Willie Mykura representing the Club.

Ursa Major at the Drum
Business as usual for the Wednesday
run despite a cold evening. Alan, Gordon, Joanne, Michael,
Oz, Paul, Richard, Shane, Willie G and Willie M hit the long
trail round the back of the new infirmary through the golden
fields of barley thistles to the Drum estate where a ¾ moon
was rising. The Plough was brilliant in the sky while Oz took
the Osram prize for the brightest headtorch. A swift pace led
by WG, 1h 40 was a challenge surmounted by Paul who still claiming
to be injured ran ahead to prove he wasn’t, while the Ochils
survivors’ group creaked. KB, grand to see Michael d’Oc nursing
his skyline but in fine form.

"Nothing lasts forever, not even

the elements—10 guns and 2 roses—or 9 Carnethies

previous hours of torrential rain let up sufficiently to reward
us with a strangely satisfying run in the Pentlands... more

Hill Runner(s) of the Year
To their great surprise Joan and
Colin Wilson were awarded the "2007 Hill Runner of the Year" award
at the Scottish Hill Runners annual do on Saturday. This is the
first time the award has gone to two people and is a well deserved
award for the pair who must have completed at least 30 hill races
this year ! They are possibly the first people from Carnethy
to have won this award. Congratulations, Colin and Joan !

Carnethy Woman in Scottish Line-Up
Lucy Colquhoun has just been nominated as the 28th most eligible woman in
Scotland by 'Scotland on Sunday' in their list of the top 50! Here's what
they said about Lucy.
Well, Lucy is no doubt used to men chasing her as the entire field (but one)
did in this year's West Highland Way! The full list of the 50 most eligible
women is here.
To keep things even, there's also a list of the 50 most eligible men, here,
but for some reason this year no Carnethy men are featured, perhaps they
all forgot to wipe the mud off their walshes before their first date.

Carnethy Special Reserve at the Meall a Bhuachaille Race
A vile forecast
was ignored by the Loch Morlich weather. It was breezy, not too
cold, and dry on the start line. A pity there
was no snow on the ridge. It always enhances this race. An
earlier reccy at 2300ft suggested it was going to be very windy
up high – and
it was. The Carnethy team of Joan and Colin Wilson, Steven
Fallon, JBF and Keith Burns had a brief tactical chat, and
rejected close
packing as unrealistic. So we each pondered our separate strategies
for this very tactical course.
The start merits a dash to get
a good place before you leave the Ryvoan track for the steep narrow
mud strip up through
the forest. By the time we emerged onto the bouldery slopes
of the
south ridge of Meall we were being battered by a strong SW
wind. MV60 Dougie Milligan was now well away and beyond reach.
I gave
up hope of repeating my flukey victory over him at Manor Water.
I was passed by Tom Bowie; another contender amongst the MV60
gang. Tom looked as though he was going to get his revenge
for my marginally faster run at Tinto.
By the time we reached the
summit cairn, he was about 5 yards
clear. We turned into the wind and staggered down towards the
bealach swopping places as we struggled to avoid being blown
off the track. A brief slide set me back a bit but I recovered
and
caught Tom again at the bealach. As soon as we started climbing
Creagan Gorm he passed me again and slowly pulled ahead. I
needed to keep him within striking distance for the rough descent
through
the deep heather on the south ridge of Creagan Gorm. At the
summit I had another gap of 5 yards or so to make up. I needed
to convert
this into a substantial lead in the rough if I was to hold
him off later on the fast descent through the forest.
The minor
course diversion (to take us away from new planting)
helped my plan through the heather because there were fewer
hidden boulders than the older line. I pulled out a reasonable
lead but
wasn’t sure whether it was enough credit in the bank for
the last climb up the forest road from the reindeer house,
where he was bound to close on me. With Tom leaping across
the last
few yards of deep heather in pursuit, I shot off down the forest
track.
I had a good re-ascent up the forest road from the reindeer
house and hadn’t felt the need to look back. Just before
the final slide down the muddy groove I had a quick check behind
to confirm
I could relax.
He was back again! – 10 yards behind. He had been closing
on me all the way from the reindeer house. I sped down the muddy
groove like a shit off a shovel and hit the Ryvoan track with
a real sense of urgency. Tom’s Fife supporters made it very
clear he was close. The last decision was whether to go for the
main path or the short root-strewn sneaky track before the lodge
grounds that avoids about 2 meters of re-ascent. I went for the
roots and managed to get home with my lead. Dougie was well home
and rested. I never got within sight of him. Dan Whitehead won,
along with Claire in the women’s race. Steven was up with
the leaders at 9th; JBF was 61st; KB 73rd; and Colin and Joan
followed me five minutes apart in 84th and 106th – out of
141 starters. Colin and Joan clocked up yet another race in
their wedding anniversary celebration streak.
The familiar presence
of Dick Amour was greatly missed at this
fine race. He was so much a part of it, and was gone forever,
a very sad loss to Highland Hill Runners and us all.
Later,
we dined and danced at the SHR Do at Badaguish and enjoyed
the traditional wind-down to a good season. Thanks SHR.

Borders Cross-Country at Norham
Graeme Carracher and Willie Mykura flew
the Carnethy colours at the first XC race of the Borders series, at
Norham. The
awaiting pack welcomed the news
that the route had been shortened slightly this year, and that a rope-climb
had been included up the muddy slope. The classic cross-country route
took us over fields, along disused railway, down muddy slopes, through
the burn, with a short rest on the rope climb as the arms took over.
This was the first of the 6 races, organised by the Borders Clubs:Details

Gordon is 50
After a fairly heavy night at The Malt Whisky Society,
Gordon proved that good quality malt whisky has no after effects by
appearing bright
as a button at Flotterstone for his 50th Birthday celebrations. We
set off the usual 15 minutes late and visited a large 50 written in
Flour near Turnhouse summit (more about that in the next Journal),
where our we took some photos and allowed Nigel to catch us up. Then
we headed
along the ridge and came upon a group of walkers who spontaneously
broke into Happy Birthday to Gordon, that hat was a dead giveaway!
Willie
and Jill caught us up on the way up Scald Law, where we decided it
was time to head to the pub.
More alcohol was imbibed in the evening at Gordon's house.
His cake
was obviously baked by a Shoe Sous Chef.

Done to a tee
Wed run, think golf. Haven't done this for ages. A grand band of
sixteen runners headed off across the golf course to cross the next, um,
golf course, to reach,
join in with the chorus, the golf course, of course.
Willie called the shots, with jogs on the par 5s, and sprints on the
par 3s. We held off the extra stroke, no fatalities (some falls on steep
wet grass); some iron men
(and iron girls) were defeated by the woods (and gorse). Back at the
Royal and Ancient Clubhouse members compared handicaps - 'tough on the legs',
'a hard one'. All with the biggest
of smiles.

Record field and fast times at 'Run
& Become' Tinto Hill Race
A massive, high quality field of 246
runners "enjoyed" the blustery conditions at Tinto, easily
the largest field ever. At the front there was a race long
battle between Joe Symonds (Dundee H) and 3 times winner Jethro
Lennox (Shettleston), which resulted in Joe winning in the 4th
fastest time ever in 30:19 and a personal
best for Jethro in second, 13 secs behind. Al Anthony was a distance
3rd in 32:07; a fast descent from Brian Marshall (HELP) pulled
him up to 4th while Adam Ward (Carnethy) was first over 40 in 5th
place
just
in front of another
fast descender, Steven Fallon (Carnethy). Angela Mudge (Carnethy)
recorded the second fastest ever female time (she, of course,
has
the
fastest!) in finishing 10th overall in 34:29. Adding to the race
atmosphere were an incredible 47 runners from Carnegie
Harriers, who had
come to pay tribute to club-mate George Murdoch, a keen hill runner
who died recently while out training.

Dick Amour - A Tribute
Photo: Lake District Mountain Trial Association, 2007
Dick was always a regular at Meall a Bhuachaille as
a runner or marshal. All the photographs of the start and finish at last
year's race were taken by him. He was a member of Carnethy and of Inverness Harriers
before Highland Hill Runners was formed. He was also one of the founder members of HHR.
Dick's main competitive sport especially in the last few years was orienteering,
but he always took the time to be involved in HHR activities. If help was required
for an event Dick was always first to volunteer and it was always a blessing
to have him in your race organising team because you knew everything would
then go right. In the summer months Dick was a keen hill loch fisherman and he used
to fish isolated lochs which had never seen a rod and line before. He was also a
keen botanist. On many a club outing he would detour from the main circuit to
visit a secret alpine plant location. I remember on one occasion seeing him
perched precariously on a crag near Beinn Dearg as he photographed his prize.
He was a top bloke and he will be sadly missed. Highland Hill Runners will
hold a memorial race for Dick.

In
the end there were ten of us and one hound. Keith Burns, Richard
Laith, Karl Winkler, Alan Hogg, Oz Oswald. Willie
Gibson, John Coyle , Shane Bouchier, myself(JABF), Louise Proven
and Storm (the dog).
There
were
several discussions about the
route - we took a more direct line fo Drundreich than I can remember.
The optimum route between Blackhope Scar and Garvald law is still
up for discussion as is the route through the peak hags back from
Huntly Cot Hills. It seems strange that we DID find an optimum route
when we raced the route in the early 80s. But then there were fewer
races to optimise.... Those of us who did the full route took four
and a hour hours. I have 2.26 in my diary from when I raced it in
1985, legendarily bettered by Robin Morris in 1986.
John Coyle, Storm & Willie left us after the descent
from Dundreich. Shane and Louise headed back from Blackhope Scar.
The other six of us did the full course.
Andy Spenceley came to meet
Keith and
I on his new racing bike at Gladhouse Reservoir after everyone
else had gone home. Having inspected shoes on the run we were
then invited to inspect Andy's pedals.

Superb win for Lyn at East District Cross
Country
The
warm weather and sunshine brought many runners to the first East
District Cross Country race of the season, held at Broxburn.
The dry ground gave a

clover-leaf course undulated steadily throughout, with one steeper
climb on the first loop. Carnethy counters were thinly spread, with

The Seat and Craigmillar
Nine showed despite the first real chill of the season. We left
KB in the dark, Pollock Halls, up the new-fangled rough stone
steps that now adorn the gutted
haddie, a cleft up the flank of A's seat. They may not be that
new, but they're certainly fangled! - as a troop descending
Monday discovered, we confirmed
tonight going up with headtorches. Irregular, and impossible to run
at a steady pace! We cut
left towards the top, more fangles, to be greeted by the blush
of the crescent moon rising over Hillend. Dunsapie,
down through long grass to enter the Carnethy Xmas-Card competition
- 'Hill Runners on the Bungee Tree' and on to do circles on another
golf course (WG claimed
we were not 'lost', just doing an extra round of the greens).
Then it became quite interesting. As we ran up Craigmillar we
passed a bonfire, or was it a burning car, we didn't stop, we
headed up to the positively bizarre chimes of
an ice-cream van sounding somewhere below. Down through the
trees on the far side, tried to reassure Simon and Oz's 'wouldn't
run through here alone in the dark' with
'worst you could meet would be a kid on a scooter or another
runner' when we ran into some local youths: a wee bit of aggro,
we didn't turn to watch who
was following us. School hols no doubt. Trouble averted, Simon
remarked - 'and you were saying?' Humble pie. Safe return through
Inch, Double-Hedges, usual route, but unsettled.
So back, after a fast 8 miles/12 km, to the haven of KB.

FRA Relay Championships, Forest of Bowland - Saturday 13th October

Carnethy finished 3 teams at this annual feast of fell running.
The Carnethy Men's Over 40 team was the first Scottish team to finish
and the 4th Over 40 team (matching last year) in 19th overall. The
Ladies team also had a good result as they spent almost all of the
race in 4th position, eventually finishing 5th but they
were only just 2mins behind the 3rd team after nearly 5
hours of running. The other Carnethy team, the Men's Open finished
38th out
of the 117 teams. Full report by Captain Steven here !
Despite the hills being covered in mist for part of the race and
a steady drizzle - this was a great event to take part in. All the
legs went over
much the same area - just some had more ups and downs..... spectators
could get views of runners coming off the hill towards the finish
- so it was fun
to watch once you were finished running. Running leg 2, I took a
very slight detour in the thick mist after check 4, wasting a few
precious minutes (sorry!)
so just as well I was running the partly flagged route! However,
Angela and Lucy made sure we had a good start, Helene and Jacqui
made up the places I
lost and more and Kate ensured we finished in the top 5 ladies team.
The Captains should be inundated with people wanting to run next
year (although I might not
get to run then...) thanks to Kate and Steven for organising everything.

Club Run and AGM
A foreshortened Wednesday run, a grand
sprint around the local hills, led by Willie G, was followed by the
club AGM, hosted by KB Union. There was a very good turnout from
club members. Key issues
were the election of the Committee, the annual Club Prizes, the possible
amalgamation of the running and racing clubs and a new format / frequency
for
the Club Newsletter. Details to be
circulated in due course.

Indian Summer at the Pentland Skyline - Saturday
5th October
This year's race was won by Andy Symonds
(Carnegie), with Alasdair Anthony (Ochils) second and Grant
Stewart (EAC) in third. Carnethy's
Stewart Whitlie, Simon Peachey and Steven Fallon finished in
the first ten (Stewart and Steven 2nd and 4th V40s too, behind
Colin Donnelly, 4th overall and 1st V40) helping Carnethy to
the team prize. Sula Young (HBT) won the ladies
race, with Ellen Homewood (Westerlands) and Emma O'Shea
(U/A) 2nd and 3rd. John Blair-Fish (Carnethy) led the V50s
and Tom Bowie (Fife) the V60s. Mary Hunter (Portobello)
was 1st FV40.
Joanne Thin made
the full monty round despite her Wednesday crunch, and the club deplores some
elbowing and jostling as Bob, Keith and Nigel arrived at the finish
- and that
was just the sweepers! Well
done Shane for a superbly organised race, Richard R who'd organised the previous
decade stood by without a feather on his shoulder as SB chewed his
nails to the raw, but Irish Luck
prevailed with finest weather (though the Gods spoke back, and crashed Shane's
computer).

Hospitals Route
Wednesday run, dreich. Worried about getting cold, but by a mile up
the road all jackets were off. There was some skiing on wet downhill
turf , Joanne hit a boghole, hope that ankle is OK. On the way back
from Craiglockhart the old ambulance station was gone, forcing a reroute.
Back to base for a shower and some good craik. Nice route for a damp
evening. Re photo, principal aguido has now been named - dead giveaway,
spot the ozzie legs at the back!
