    The Club Pub Run
I can't remember whether there were 10 or eleven people, or whether we visited 10 or eleven Pubs, but we did go to one twice and I can remember having a drink of Gordons Gin in "The Gordons" with Gordon.
But the rest is a bit of a Blur.

Edinburgh Reebok Cross Challenge - Marbeth Shiell runs in U17 girls
Holyrood Park saw the running of that flatter cousin of hillrunning, cross country, at the weekend. It was the Reebok Cross Challenge's second visit to Edinburgh and was viewed by officials as a warmup for the European Cross Country Championships which will be held on this course on 14th December 2003. There are no official results yet but I hear from those in the know that Marbeth ran an excellent race against very strong competition. Carnethy halfway round the World and up to the Pole
Carnethy member Brian Cunningham leaves the UK on Monday on the first leg of his unique expedition to Antarctica for a two-man kite-hauled sledging attempt from the South Pole to Patriot Hills base. They arrive in Punta Arenas on 17th December. The following three days will be spent sorting gear ready for the flight to Patriot Hills in Antarctica on 21st December. At Patriot Hills they transfer to chartered Twin Otter aircraft for the flight to the Pole. After an overnight camp for acclimatisation (the Pole is at 3,000m) they set off the following day on their kite-propelled sledges for the high speed journey to the coast. No news yet on development of the brakes. Substantial sugar and carbohydrate refuelling is provided by main sponsor, Kit Kat. They also expect to get a bit of running done whilst they're down there.

GLENTRESS DUATHLON - Sunday 8th Dec
The first of the three-race series was the medium distance event, comprising a 4 mile mountain bike followed by a 4 mile run over the challenging Glentress Forest MTB circuits. People competed individually or in teams of 1 biker + 1 runner, though Mark Johnston ran both and beat most of the bikes!
As all the available bikes were rented out so I used my own – with no suspension the descent was a bit jarring, but I ran out of bottle before the bike did anyway. I finished the biking without major spills, but fell over at the start of the run (to the amusement of the spectators) and suffered cramp all the way up the hill until the descent, but made up several of the places I’d lost during the cycle. A great route, which made good use of the Glentress facility, thanks to Pete Baxter.

    OCHILS JOURNEY RUN
A dozen Carnethy runners and one visitor turned up at Dollar on Saturday 30th November for a journey run in the Ochils. Before long we lost several runners as they went off to rescue a sick ewe on the hillside. We were eventually re-united in thick mist and strong winds at the summit cairn of King's Seat. The mist provided an interesting navigational challenge as we made our way across the head of the Gannel Burn and on to Skythorn Hill. We progressed by Ben Shee and Glen Sherup dam in the rain then sheltered in the forest for lunch. The wind dropped for our return over Innerdownie but there was much floundering in the mist to find the right way off Whitewisp and down to Castle Campbell. The day was rounded off with cakes and soup in the snug Dollar Tearoom.

Carnethy Bid to Revolutionise Arctic TravelTheParastorm Buggy
Brian Cunningham, Carnethy member from Bolton, the home of Walsh (developers of the collapsible running shoe) plans to recover Bolton's reputation in the outdoor world with a bold expedition to use kite-hauled sledges to travel from the South Pole to the edge of the Antarctic land mass at Patriot Hills. This will be a minimalist two-man expedition using latest technology that will revolutionise travel over ice and snow. The one- man sledges are designed by Williams Formula 1 engineer, Keiron Bradley, and have dynamic suspension for high-speed travel. Propulsion will be from up to 10 square meters of steerable kite. Braking is still under development.
The expedition sets off for Antarctica in December under major sponsorship from Kit Kat (which will supply funds and major calorific intake) and Adventure Network International (who will organise running expeditions in Antarctica for you). ANI are providing substantial financial support for transporting Brian's equipment to Antarctica.
Progress reports will follow. Watch this space.

    WEEKEND RACES
Some Carnethy members ran races at the weekend and two managed to hit the headlines in the newspapers. Lars Ottemoller won the 2.4k City of Edinburgh Bert Farmer Memorial Race on the Meadows and Jill Tait was second in the British Energy 10 Mile Multi-terrain Race at Dunbar.
    Multi-terrain Report:
It was a fine sunny day for this year’s race, but a strong sea breeze kept conditions cool and pretty ideal for running. The race includes field tracks, gravel paths, a lot of tarmac sections and a small hill, and provides a fast but challenging course. Most of the race was assisted by a following wind, until the final long stretch back into Dunbar, but by this time we could smell the tea and sandwiches at the leisure centre. Some good Carnethy performances, but Portobello took the ladies prize, and both team prizes. As seems to be the norm these days, veterans outnumbered seniors by 2:1 in both male and female categories. Where are all the younger runners? Do we need to increase the age at which we become veterans...?
