    Club Pub Run
From what I remember it was a good night.
The route was 10.41 miles and had 779 feet of climb. We left KB at 7:10 and visited The Braidburn, The Robin's Nest, The Northfield, The Marmion, The Waverley, The Fox's, The DemOlished Bordeaux, The Stable Bar, The Balmwell, The Liberton Inn and then on to The Spenceley's House at 11:10 , about 15 minutes behind Naismith!
There were 14 of us some wearing flashing hats some wearing Christmas trees sticking out our heads and Kate Jenkins was in a rather fetching dress with flashing dog collar.
Many thanks to all the participants for making it a memorable evening and especially to Andy and Hilary for allowing us to stagger into their house and await our ambulances home.
Photos are here and the full story will follow when I remember it .

Queens Drive Race 5.3k, 14th December
The running events in Edinburgh yesterday kicked off early with the Queens Drive race around Arthurs Seat. Scottish running legend Liz McColgan, who is currently making an impressive comeback, ran in the race, adding to the special sense of occasion. My own race plans went out the window after five seconds when I found myself face down on the road, with two hundred people trying not to run over the top of me. Not too badly damaged, I picked myself up and with a surge of adrenaline, worked my way towards the front end. Unfortunately the adrenaline ran out on the hill and I had to ease off as I hit the biting winds at the top loch. Coming onto the flat I'd recovered sufficiently to start thinking of pushing on again. Then a figure appeared, breathing hard at my right shoulder, it was Liz!!. She was ticking along at a good pace, perfect to help get me back into the race if I could hold on. Our tussled lasted round the back of the hill then I took my chance on the steep downhill to the finish and kicked on, the last descent felt a long way!!. Adam was next Carnethy in, not far behind Liz, with Garry another 20 seconds back. Marbeth was first junior lady and there were lots of other Carnethy's out early too for this hilly road race. Think I'll be asking Santa for some knee and elbow padsfor Christmas, road racing can be dangerous!!.

European Cross Country Championships, 14th December
Thousands of folk came out to watch another running legend, Paula Radcliffe, win gold in the main event of the day in Holyrood Park. She had a battle on her hands with the Turkish Ethiopian Abeylegesse hanging on until Paula got a decisive winning gap on the slopes of Haggis Knowe on the last lap.
Both the Senior and Junior Women won team gold to cap a great day of athletics.

    Simonside Cairns, Rothbury. 14th December
With tired legs from a hilly Gala Harriers handicap race on Saturday I ventured down to Rothburry for the third time to this superb 11 mile race. It was a stunning but dazzling, crisp and clear day on the moor, in the forest and bog and over the hill its self. The route was altered to avoid felled forest and gave more time on the hill with views east to the sea. I seemed to only have one gear and left first lady with 40 second lead.

    Norham XC, Sunday 7th December
This was a "real" XC course of river crossings, steep muddy valley sides with roped assistance, grassy river banks, tussocks and fields (and no bureaucracy) on a stunning crisp & sunny winter's day. This was the second in the Eastern Border XC league and few Carnethies appeared including Jill & Willie, Mark James, Marbeth & Dougie Sheill and me. Jill had a flyer in under the half hour, I stumbled in worn out after yesterday's frolics in 31:40 with Willie following close behind. Other results to follow. The next one in this series is on 18th Jan at Cocklawburn Beach, Berwick if you feel inclined to get that far.

    The Carnethy Tale

Unofficially Carnethy ladies were second in the National relays at Cumbernauld.
Officially we were about second last, with just 2 counters. It seemed to be a day of falling foul of officialdom. Jill worked hard to get a team and at the last minute we had Lyn, Marbeth and me, but we discovered that Marbeth had not been pre-declared so could not count. It would seem to be simple that we could complete the race with her as a non counter, but not so. It was just too much for bureaucracy to get its head round. Lyn tore in after an amazing run in c15:34 in 3rd place and I was meant to be concentrating on the change over as second runner.
However, I was otherwise occupied being lectured that Marbeth could not set off with leaders if I came back in a high place. Who knows why as we had agreed she would not go though the end funnel to avoid confusion. Suitably distracted I flew off for a reasonable run, overtaking the now leading second leg lady. As the so-far winning team did not have further runners I was in the lead.
The loops of white ribbons, and red and white tape, flags were confusing, I had to yell for directions on numerous occasions. I was shouted at that I should "bring my glasses". I found many others went wrong too.
Marbeth set off in the lead and I yelled support, determined to win despite officialdom, but she had harder competition than I had and won an admirable (unofficial) second, to be greeted by more officials moaning at her. They soon moved onto me though as I had not worn a club vest, having been told we did not have a team and also because I had forgotten a certain undergarment required. On top of that I was chastised for running-supporting near the runners which could be called "pacing!", jogging about supporting with a number on which could be "confusing" and told not to cheer near the finish as this would distract the time keepers.
Seems as though I could do nothing right in the land of officialdom, but it was great fun and we all ran brilliantly.

    Kate Jenkins (Vest)

    The Official's Version

When Kate arrived at declarations I asked her in what the CHR team was ,she said L.Wilson her and M.Shiel.
It occured then I couldn't remember if Marbeth was entered, checked programme , she wasn't. Told Kate as she wasn't entered as it was a championship event she couldn't finish in a counting team and if allowed to run should be finishing away from funnels and finish line. I should say at this point I should have said she shouldn't be allowed to run at all.
I told the referee about the situation, he accepted it but was rightly concerned that someone who was not counting should be running the last lap in say the top ten teams as athletes who were running for 1, 2 ,3 , 4, 5 etc should know just where they are in the race.
Kate appeared in lead at end of the 2nd lap the Referee told Marbeth not to go when Kate came in but to wait till he said so, the line judge didn't know this and when Kate came in he said "GO" and Marbeth did.
The Referee rightly was not happy, C of G chasing Marbeth for the whole lap unaware that she wasn't in race. Ian Hislop an official and friend of Marbeth ran to her 300m before finish and told her to drop out well before line which she did (while in 2nd place). The Referee told Marbeth that she should have waited for his word to GO. Marbeth said she went when line judge said "GO"
Kate came into the conversation and there was much discussion....
At end of discussion Lyn Wilson apologised to me for Kate going a wee bit over the top.
At end of day Lyn and Kate collected results and Kate apologised to me for going a wee bit over the top.
All happy (apart from the referee who didn't get an apology).

    Everest Marathon - 23rd November 2003
The StartTitled the highest & hardest marathon in the world. Perhaps the biggest challenge is getting to the start line both fit & healthy. The race precedes a 17 day trek, including acclimatisation trips up Gokyo Valley, the Khumbu Valley and to the race start line at Gorak Shep. Trekking through spectacular scenery, blue sky and clear views of Everest, Ama Dablam and Lhotse to name only a few.
The 7 am start on race day was not to be missed - the initial sprint at the start was short lived as there is no air getting to your lungs! Descending through Lobuche, up over Tengboche and the climb up Sarnasa hill takes you back to Namche and the final 10k loop. Just over 4 hours after the race started the first Nepalese takes first place. The first Brit home was Dan Golding in just under 5 hours. Adrian Davies was third equal Brit and joint 21st. Also completed by Paula Drouet and me.
A physical and mental challenge - trying to avoid the D & V, AMS & Khumbu cough all part of the challenge. The highs compensate for the lows to make it a race to remember for a long time.

    Loch Ossian Club Weekend
The Club Trip to loch Ossian went very well. I ran in on Friday with Hilary Spenceley and Moira Stewart. We went in from Laggan over Geal Carn, where I fell off a cornice, I didn't feel in danger , but the thought that if I had needed rescued, perhaps the 2 bottles of beer the bottle of wine and the hip flask full of cask strength Teaneanich in my ruck sack would have taken a bit of explaining.
In order to avoid any more disasters we decided to descend out of the whiteout conditions. We visited the Club Memorial to Peter Brooks and got to the Youth Hostel at 4:15. After a few beers and a nice meal we met the others off the train.
The refurbished hostel is excellent and we had a pleasant evening. We woke up to a very wet Saturday and there were a few expeditions to Corbetts and Munros. 6 of us went over Ben na Lap to Strath Ossian in very wet, but better than expected conditions. Then I ran back out to the car to head for Edinburgh and a family party.
The weather was much improved on sunday when there was a foray over the southern Ossian Munros.
I was in Glen Tress doing something different!

    Thurston Manor, Dunbar. 23rd November
More my scene. Frosty fields and leaf strewn woods made a pleasant setting for the first of the Eastern Border XC league. I doubt I was much slower than yesterday but my spirits were cheered by managing 1st lady, followed by a warm-down under pristine blue skies at Ravenheugh. The riding high was short lived as my new car was soon riding high over 2 square feet of concrete lying invisibly on a back road to East Linton. The 30 mile cycle to work will keep me fit.

    Reebok Shock
Saturday saw Carnethy ladies taking part in a 5.7km cross country race at Sefton Park, Liverpool. One of the Reebok series, this race served as the trial race for a place in the GB team going to the European cross country champs at Holyrood Park this December. It was also the European Club Trial between 4 selected national clubs (Carnethy, Chester-le-Street, Lagan Valley and Swansea Harriers), for a place in the European Club Cup in Italy. How could we turn down such an invitation from UK Athletics?
Unfortunately, a lack of serious hills and mud pushed the Mudge-Jenkins-Tait-Wilson quartet into second place as the stronger Chester-le-Street led the way in the club event.
Meanwhile, in the Team event, the strong SAL Scottish squad of Kathy Butler, Susan Partridge, Collette Fagan and Freya Murray brought home success for Scotland, with England in second place. With less than 3 minutes between the first 50 ladies in a field of 169, this was high standard cross country racing. In indomitable style, Angela carried the flag for Carnethy coming home 11th lady overall, with respectable performances from Lyn, Jill and Kate.
A privilege and a shock to experience!
    Jill Tait

Carnethy presented its strong team of Angela, Lyn and Jill with backup jogger Kate on the 6km flat course at Sefton Park. The pace was something out of this world right from the start which put me into lactic for the whole agonising race! My usual sprint felt like a shuffle as the famous faces battled it out. The team all had a great run and we were 11th, 45th and 55th with me struggling in in 86th - that's 31 people between Jill and me in just 1 3/4 minutes! We achieved a commendable second club in the competition for the GB team to compete in the European club champs. The escape from Liverpool was as hard as the race and I ended up abandoning the car and standing back from the magnetic object to take a bearing north...

European Club Trial Race at Reebok Cross-Country, Liverpool
Good Luck to Carnethy Ladies at Liverpool on Saturday to decide which club will represent Britain in the European Clubs Champs in Italy on 1st Feb. Race preview, below, taken from the UK Athletics web page. UKathletics
"The women's race-within-the-race promises to be a fierce head to head between the pride of Scotland, Carnethy Hill Racing Club, and Chester-le-Street AC, who have already celebrated the 25th anniversary of their foundation by winning the English National title for the first time. The rapidly improving club from the North East of England boast four Norwich Union GB internationals: Dianne HENAGHAN, who ran in last year's European Cross Country Championships, Morag McDONNELL, Kathryn WAUGH and Sarah WILKINSON. Carnethy proudly proclaim themselves to be the World Mountain Running Champions since three of their members were in the Scottish Team that won the title in Alaska in September. Two of the Golden girls, Angela MUDGE, who was also the individual Silver medallist, and Lyn WILSON, who finished 18th, are in Liverpool. But Mountain Bronze medallist Tracey BRINDLEY is missing because of a chest infection. Scottish Hill Running Champion Jill TAIT is in the team, but the lack of a strong fourth counter could be decisive."

Roaches Fell Race - Sunday 16th November
After enjoying fell-running in Shropshire at the FRA Relays, we decided to do another race well south of the usual areas by running the 15 mile Roaches Fell race in north Staffordshire on Sunday.
An excellent out and back course along the lovely Staffordshire gritstone edges, with steep valleys, lots of gates and stiles and a steep conical hill (known locally as the Matterhorn ! ) being the turning point. No sign of the wild wallabies that used to live in the Roaches (just lots of rock climbers) as I struggled to the finish in my first long run of the year in 17th place in 2hrs 26 with Hilary finishing 99th in 3hrs 18.
The race was won by GB international Simon Bailey. Results (will be on) www.macclesfield-harriers.co.uk

    Lasswade Cross Country
Having missed Tinto with the Gala Harriers XC Champs along the Tweed and SUW I made it a double with Lasswade on Sunday. Plenty time to explore to 3.5 mile course as I was accidentally 2 hours early... A good flat course of pitches, stubble fields and woods for tired legs, but I just couldn't quite catch Liz McColgan who was about 3 mins ahead on 3.5 miles! I was 8th. Good fun, but no other Carnethies!

    Tinto Hill Race
It was cold and windy but the underfoot conditions were good for fast running. Angela continues to move the ladies' goal posts out of reach of most of us. She broke the record by about 50 seconds, but she's not the only Carnethy lady impressing the powers that be. Jill Tait had an excellent run to finish second and Joan Wilson was first O40. The men's race was comfortably won by Jethro Lennox (Shettleston) with Alistair Anthony (Ochils) and Tim Lenton (Lothian) second and third, respectively. Adam Ward (Carnethy) won the O40.
There were only 7 juniors in the junior race. Conditions too tough? Over 150 turned out for the senior race. Results.

I'm afraid that I don't have results or details but in an effort to really expel the worsening cold I did the Jedburgh half on Sunday in its 2nd year of running. Page 3 girl MudgeI
Two former world champions battled it out in the East District League race at Livingston on Saturday when Angela Mudge and Liz McCoglan went head to head. After a race long battle, the fast course, and lack of mud, suited Liz more than Angela and she got away at the end to finish just 9 secs in front of Angela. This race caused quite a stir in the press, so much that it made front page news in the Herald (in the main news part, not the Sports section!) and a long article on page 3 including a picture of Angela!
    Andy Spenceley
    Kate was there too
I spluttered my way round a really nice wooded and parkland course at Deans, Livingston for the 1st East District's CC. Liz McColgan was there to give Angela a great race and I think Liz just beat Angela by about 9 seconds. Angela and I were the only Carnethies. Scottish Athletics Annual Awards DinnerI
Carnethy Ladies World Championship winning team (Angela, Tracey and Lyn in case you can't remember!!) scooped the Bank of Scotland team of the year award at Saturday night's SAL awards dinner. Angela also came runner up to Lee McConnell in the female athlete of the year category, an award which she had won previously in 2000. Unfortunately nobody bothered to nominate Carnethy for the club of the year award which was a bit surprising after national championship winning performances on hill, road and cross country in 2003.
Alex JacksonA special mention must also be given to the Jackson Family (Alex, Jen, Peter and Heather) who were awarded the Tom Stillie Claymore for their services to athletics. The Scottish endurance running scene is truely indebted to the hard work put in over the years by the Jackson's and I'm sure everyone is glad to see their work being recognised.

    Congratulations to all the winners!!.

    KIMM 2003
In the Kimm today there were a few Carnethy runners. Janice Mudge partnered Garry MacInnes to first mixed in the Long Score despite missing the start on day one by 20 minutes due to going to the wrong start. Adrian Davis (Fife AC and Carnethy) and Alec Keith (HBT) were 5th in the Elite and Tim and Mark Higginbottom were 10th and (quick) Mick James and (Weary) Willie Gibson were 21st.
Saddest result of the day was Chris Davies and Olly Stephenson who also did the Elite but clicked a wrong control (the last one on day 2) they would have been 16th.
    Medium Score
There was also Carnethy representation in the medium score. I was tripping over tussocks, falling down holes and occasionally breaking into a jog with a HBT friend. We had a good day on the Saturday and having convinced Neil we could squeeze in an extra control at the end was glad to get in with a few minutes in hand. Just before the finish I halloed Claire Williams... or a complete stranger... but I'm not sure what course she was running. Spotted Ian Jackson at the mid-camp, he was initiating a friend into the pleasures of the Medium Score. Having ended last years event with less points than we'd had after day1, our one aim was to be in within the time limit. This we did and managed to pick up a respectable tally along the way.
    Alasdair Hind
    B Class
Yes I was at the KIMM too. I did the B course, which was miles too long. I think the planners based the distance on the Cheviots in 2002 which had lots of track options and fairly runnable terrain. The KIMM this year was tussocks all the way! The weather held out though, which is always a plus point this time of year. We managed 11th and first female pair, despite coming in when the sun was going down on both days. I think I can claim victory over my new husband though, who with Siggy Gould (both HBT) was sitting 6th overnight, with a half hour lead. On Sunday, they got to the start, picked up the course and decided life was too short, and went for a pub lunch! I'm laughing on the other side of my face now though as I still can't run due to the blisters.

Angela was first Lady in this year's Langdale Horseshoe Race which was last weekend.
Angela writes : "I decided to miss the 'Man or Mouse' this year and race the Langdale Horseshoe race in the Lakes. This is a classic race, over rough terrain and has the potential to be beautiful. But I didn't see a thing! The mist came in and I spent the next 2 hours following random groups around the Lakeland hills, taking the 'scenic route'."

DONNAN WINS GOLD MEDAL IN EDINBURGH (article and pictures by Rob Eyton-Jones)
Ian Donnan, the Aberdeen hill runner who survived blizzard conditions to finish fourth in last month's World Mountain Running Trophy junior men's race in Alaska, won the gold medal in today's British Junior Hill Racing Championships in Edinburgh.
In the damp and windy Pentland Hills, just south of the city, the Grampian Institute of Sport Athlete who runs for the Lothian Club, finished the six and a half kilometer course in 29:48, some 70 seconds clear of the second placed Mark Buckingham from England.
" The plan was not to go off too fast and work my way into the race," said Donnan whose recent knee injury meant he was not able to run for four weeks prior to Alaska. Today though, on a course which rose and fell by 500 metres, he received a clean bill of health. "I was second on the first small lap but I got into the lead on the second. It was a very hard course and I made it even harder for myself because I really pushed myself over that second lap. I didn't feel my knee at all in the race so I think it's OK."
With the Edinburgh race marking the end of the hill-racing season, Donnan will now switch his attention to cross-country events. "I'm concentrating on the cross country from now on with the aim of getting into the GB team. It starts next weekend with a Reebok cross country race at Falkirk."

    Pentland Skyline Hill Race
There was a good turnout of 108 runners for this year's race. Conditions were cool with a little mist on the summits for most of the first half but from the Kips the tops were clear. The race was won by Paul Raistrick of "Unattached" (do you want to join a good club Paul?), who thanked his fellow competitors for pointing him in the right direction out on the hill. Jethro Lennox of Shettleston was second and Tim Lenton of Lothian was third. Tim also won the MANor Mouse Trophy for the best combined time from yesterday's and today's races.
The first Lady home was Claire Gordon of HBT.
The first Carnethy was John Coyle in fourth place.
Lothian won first team with 18 points (3rd Tim Lenton, 6th Dave Godfree, 9th Graeme Ackland), with Carnethy only 1 point behind.
Paula Drouet of Carnethy won the Mouse for the slowest combined time for the two races.

    Red Moss Night Run
Sixteen people turned up for the first night run of the series. We left Red Moss car park at 7:10 and headed east round Threipmuir reservoir and across the causway before climbing Black Hill. The deep heather made for an interesting climb and an even more interesting descent. We decided to take a straight line route to Hare Hill and found that the easiest way down through the heather was on our bums.
Cathi and Cali walked round the reservoir while we were on the hill, and we met them in Green Cleugh, where Bill left us and went back with the girls.
The rest of us headed for Hare Hill and soon got seperated form Nick, Derek and Howard, ran over the summit and back down to the cars. Then it was off to The Johnsburn for a late tea.
    A wonderful night (as ever)!

    Media Frenzy
Since returning from Alaska, Angela, Lyn and Tracey have been recieving invitations to appear at various events. They have been spotted running across Arthur's Seat in their Scottish Athletics strip whilst posing for the Evening News. Heard on John Beattie's Sports Show on Saturday morning chatting about the demands of hill running and attending a posh dinner - yes, Tracey was seen wearing a slinky black number at the recent Commonwealth Sports Awards Dinner in the Glasgow City Chambers. The 3 girls were invited to the dinner to pick up an award, in Paula Radcliffe's absence, for the Most Outstanding Female in the Commonwealth - Paula not Carnethy!

    Strathcarron Hospice 10k, 5th October
It was a Carnethy double victory at this race on Sunday with Mark Johnston (32min07sec) leading home a field of 550 runners with Angela Mudge finishing first lady, high up the field in 34min40sec. The race was all in a good cause. Last year it raised £12,000 for the Hospice and they're hoping to better this year.

    Ian Hodgson Mountain Relays
We had 1 and 7/8ths teams in the Hodgsons this year. It was a wonderful bright day when the first runners set off, but by the time it got to leg 3 there was some rain and a little mist on the summits, but luckily it cleared again. The wohole event has a great atmosphere with hundreds of runners milling about at the change overs, and a real family feel.
