Carnethy perform well again at Lairig Ghru Race, Braemar to Aviemore
Conditions looked good for the 61 runners who started in Braemar in dry, still conditions with the cloud banished to the tops of the Cairngorms. The path was very wet underfoot and showers progressively affected later stages of the race, becoming steady rain in Aviemore. This didn't dampen the spirits of the Carnethy runners however with Mark Higginbottom winning the 28 mile race in 3hrs 33 min, Willie Mykura was first vet in 3rd place overall in 3 hrs 42 min and Jill Tait was first lady in 4 hrs 4 min. Consequently Carnethy won the team prize too. Other Carnethy runners were Rod Dalitz and Kirsty Leishman.

Karen Powell comes 3rd in the Caledonian Challenge
The Caledonian Challenge is a fundraising event where participants must cover the 54 miles between Fort William and Loch Lomond on the West Highland Way. It was held on the same weekend as the WHW Race and Karen bumped into fellow Carnethy members going the other way in the race. Although most people walk the charity event Karen ran it in 10h 22 min 4 sec. Alison Powell also ran in Karen's team and came 12th overall. Results on the Caledonian Challenge website.

Sat 22nd - Eildon 2 Hills Race - British and Scottish Championship Race and SHR Super League Race.

    Ladies start, Eildon 2002

Heavy showers primed the course for some greasy going (especially on the wooden steps) but the sun was out for the race. The big field was split into women's and men's starts but the congestion at the steps was still pretty daunting, with breakouts into the woods to bypass the crawl. The field split on the ascent line of the second summit, causing a fair amount of confusion and collision risk as descending runners tried to avoid head-on collisions with those still climbing. 1. John Brooks (Lochaber) 26-51
    2. Ian Holmes (Bingley) 27-00
    3. S. Booth (Borrowdale) 27-17

    Lars Ottemoller, 35th,

West Highland Way Race - Murdo McEwan is 3rd.

Wet underfoot for virtually the whole 95 miles, and wet overhead for much of the time - but there was about 40 minutes sunshine after 12 hours - the weather added to the challenge and interest of this year's event. A record 72 starters, with 36 finishing - 50% DNF; compared to 57 starters and 38 finishers last year - 33% DNF.

    start of 7 Hills, 2002
Angela Mudge breaks 15 year-old record and is 3rd overall behind Martin Flynn and Adam Ward. Carnethy A and B teams come first and second. Angela won the ladies race and Jill Tait came second in some fast times. Angela broke Penny Rother's record on this, her first 7 Hills race, albeit by just 9 seconds. She did however take an unscheduled detour off the Braids through some waist-high gorse! The men were also impressive taking 1st, 2nd and 5th place. Bill Gauld won the over 60s. The men's A team of Martin Flynn, Adam Ward and Garry McInnes were first team and the B team of Andy Laycock, Willie Mykura and Russell Stout were second. Write up and photos featuring Martin are in the Evening News web pages. Full results can now be found on Tiso's website.

    HANDICAP REPORT
Oonagh Thin and Finn JamesGiant Squid Attack Threat but Race Goes On
Kate Jenkins' normal state of composure was upset last night as she enjoyed a swim instead of competing. She was startled by a large squid which seemed to be trying to communicate with her. Her immediate response goes unrecorded and she escaped unharmed from an incident which would have motivated Steven Spielberg to make a film.
Meanwhile the runners were struggling back from the Tantallon Castle turn on a low tide which provided a wealth of route choice. The range of options had motivated Cali to lure Colin and Keith into crossing a deep flooded channel to short cut the bay before the castle. It was a questionable strategy, but the water temperature was pleasant. New Ravensheugh competitors Jill Tait and Robin Haynes enjoyed their debut on the unusually dry boulders.
Handicapper Willie Mykura gave Keith the mixed blessing of a victory on his home course, although Colin pushed him hard all the way back to the finish, passing Kate on the way as she was emerging from the surf to escape the confused squid.
More swimming, the barbecue and bonfire were enjoyed as the sun set in a magenta sky outlining the Bass Rock. Even the midges were benign. Angela M, Jane and Lyn biked down from Edinburgh by various imaginative routes.
The beach race once again showed that rational handicapping can't be done for this terrain.

    GLEN ROSA HORSESHOE RACE, ARRAN
This is one of the top three great Scottish true mountain races. To qualify for this category a race should have very rough and varied terrain, exposure, difficult lines of retreat, distance and climb.
These races must be preserved as the international mountain racing format threatens our traditions.
Dave Freeman and his team put on yet another superbly organised and marshalled event which sets the standard for others to copy. Arran delivered its usual perverse weather, but during the race it was reasonably kind in that the intermittent rain was warmish and the wind was only moderate. Cloud cover was dramatic rather than difficult.
Ronnie Gallagher led the field home in a time of 2-31-06.
The women's race was won by Jean Cairns of Westerlands in 26th place (3-29-08).
The Carnethy turnout was poor for such an outstanding race.
Andrew Lennie placed an impressive 14th (3-08-56) in his Rosa debut with no prior knowledge of the area.
Nicholas Fournier placed 20th in 3-22-11 after suffering route choice problems on the descent of Ben a Chliabhain.
Following his scenic diversion he caught Keith Burns again late on the descent of Goat Fell to displace him into 21st place (3-22-34).
Bill Gauld placed 31st in 3-53-39.
    There were 42 starters.
Ominously, construction is about to start on a knee-wrecking boulder path down from the A Chir - Cir Mhor bealach, but this shouldn't discourage you from going to this quite outstanding race next year.

    BIGGAR GALA HILL RACE
This 6 mile hill race is really a 10k road race with some steep hills. A welcome break from the rain allowed a record number of 44 runners to enjoy a fine evening, and join in the gala celebrations in Biggar afterwards. I especially enjoyed the ‘bed race’, involving pushing beds on wheels down the main A702 trunk road!

    TRAPRAIN LAW RACE
Keith Burns - organiser Carnethy were in force Leaving the village Angela being congratulated
East Linton delivered its usual sunny weather for the Traprain Law Race. This is an open race following Carnethy's policy of no restrictive "permits" or surcharges for non-existent services from other bodies.
Conditions were very warm and humid. The river was tranquil and refreshing. The nettles were stimulating. The killer bees had not returned (was it foot and mouth disease?). The craggy climb of the Law was dry. The fixed ropes arranged for the greasy wet conditions of the previous night were unnecessary.
Ronnie Gallagher of Westerlands demonstrated growing Veteran Power with his outright win in 39-34 and provided another pointer to Senior Men's endangered species status.
Angela Mudge delivered a predictable new women's record time of 41-43 (Joyce Salvona's 1996 record was 44-55) and yet another pointer to Senior Men's endangered species status. She took 4th place overall, following Ronnie, Keith Hood of Corstorphine and Brian Marshall of HELP.
Carnethy secured the team prize despite the results computer's attempt to deny them the victory over local team HELP.
Many thanks to the Bill Cowan of the local police, Carnethy members and many others who helped with the marshalling.

    BENS OF JURA RACE
Despite slow conditions with cloud on the tops and heavy going due to recent rain, Angela Mudge managed to break Angela Brand-Barkers 14 year old women's record in the Bens of Jura Fell race on her first attempt at the race. She completed the course in 3hrs 49mins 50secs, to place 7th overall in a field of 130 runners. David Rogers from Lochaber won the race in 3hrs 19mins 0secs from Ian Homes of Bingley (3-25). Angela's was one of many Carnethy successes as Stewart Whitlie, another debutant, had a brilliant run to place 4th in 3hr 43 as well as being first vet, while Kate Jenkins was second woman in 4hrs 21mins and Bill Gauld was first O/60 in just over 5hrs.
Other Carnethy runners at the race this year were Andy Spenceley, 14th in a few seconds over 4hrs, Colin Pritchard in 5:45 and Hilary Spenceley in 6:30. The Carnethy team of Stewart, Angela and Andy were 2nd team behind a strong Bingley squad. One of the luckiest people in the field was Dave Cummins of Shettleston who finished 13th in 3hrs 59mins 59secs ... remember all finishers under 4hrs get an engraved whisky glass ! But of course that makes Andy the unluckiest, after just failing to catch Dave on the line, he missed a whisky glass and a vets prize. Once again the race weekend was the fantastic social occasion it always is with several hundred people made welcome by the people of Jura. Definitely one of the best races to do in Scotland - the whole atmosphere of the weekend is unique.

    Dechmont Law 10k Trail Race
A few club members turned out for the inaugural 10k trail race through the woodlands surrounding Dechmont Law in Livingston. Heavy rain before the start (and during the previous week) made underfoot conditions tricky in places, very much like a cross country race but warmer!!. Tracey Brindley won the ladies race, being ungentlemanly outsprinted in the race for third overall by Lothian's Colin Eades and Dave Godfree. Mark Johnston placed second overall, 50 seconds behind Colin Meek who had won the Cairnpapple Vets Hill Race the previous day. Andy Laycock also managed a top ten finish. There were great prizes in a well sponsored event.

    CAPE WRATH CHALLENGE 25 May 27 1/2 miles; 2,200ft
The inaugural Cape Wrath Challenge from Durness village Square out to Cape Wrath lighthouse and back, with ferry journeys outward and homeward bound in mid race. The logistics of getting everyone across and back make Willie Mykura's handicapping machinations seem like child's play. As well as this "ultra" event there was a concurrent relay over the same route with teams of 2, 3, 4 or 5 members covering different distances, and also being ferried out and back mid race. I still don't understand how it all worked out!

CARNETHY DO WELL AT CULTER FELL
the president starting field Jane in the middle
Most of the rain showers held off for the Scottish Champs Race held at Culter Fell on Saturday 25th May. Phil Davies set a fast early pace and was a minute and a half clear by Culter Fell, but Mark Rigby pulled back on Comb Hill and ended up winning comfortably. Stewart Whitlie had an excellent run to finish 4th and win the vets, but there was a very close battle between Carnethy and Shetteston for the team prize in what is turning out to be a very competitive team championship. Good runs from John Coyle (6th), Adam Ward (12th) and Garry MacInnes (14th) were just enough to beat Shettleston by 1 point ! Most of the leading women had competed in the Scottish Islands Peaks race the previous weekend and Lyn Wilson had an excellent run, starting fast and keeping going, to win. Getting back to some of her old form, Jane Robertson was 2nd in a very good time, and she is now also 2nd in the Scottish Champs. She just held off Fiona Dahl of Inverness, with Kate Jenkins in 4th place. Angela Wood was 3rd counter to make win the ladies team and make it a Carnethy double.

Start of the 2002 Stuc a'Chroin Hill RaceWe had great weather for the return of this classic 14 mile race from Strathyre. The tops of Beinn Each and Stuc a Chroin looked splendid in the sunshine, and as the race got underway slightly overcast cloud provided cool conditions for running. The steep and sometimes boggy course was well marked and marshalled, with the sponsors Highland Spring providing lots of bottled water on route and Tiso's providing lots of vouchers for the winners and spot prizes! Good Carnethy performances included first lady, and we would have won the men's team prize if there had been one.

    Yorkshire 3 Peaks Race (24 miles, 4500ft)
This years race turned out to be a bit of an epic thanks to appalling weather conditions. Tracey (Brindley) won the women's race in 3.46 placing 30th overall, 35 minutes ahead of the second lady. I finished 25th only 1 minute ahead of Tracey. The weather turned really bad on the climb up Whernside where the runners faced driving cold rain and strong winds. I was feeling somewhat hypothermic by the summit despite managing to don a spare thermal, cagoule, hat and gloves (rather difficult when you cant feel your fingers!!). Luckily the weather relented briefly and I managed to thaw out a bit on the descent. Lots of runners ended up dropping out and times were slow with Simon Booth winning in 3.10, 18 minutes slower than his winning time two years ago. The prestige of the race was illustrated by the large number of people out watching despite the bad conditions. Another notable Scots performance came from Dave Cummins of Shettleston who won first newcomer in 3.30, 5th overall.

The challenging route disappeared into deep heather at regular intervals, but there were great views if you had time to look.

    CARNETHY AT THE LONDON MARATHON
It was quite inspirational running in the footsteps of all the big names in this multi-record breaking race. The weather was ideal for marathon running, cool, still & sometimes sunny, and the organisation of the race was faultless. The ChampionChip on your shoe now measures the exact start time you cross the line. You don't see many women athletes if you're running anywhere near the top of the main race, as they're all running in the elite race - I saw just 2, passing me as I slowed towards the end of my 3:08 trudge. One of them almost was Jill, who finished in 3:09, knocking 18 mins off her PB.
