Relays:
Sunday 1st September – Simon Wake Comrie Hills Relay http://www.strathearnharriers.org.uk/our-races/simon-wake-comrie-hills-relay
These are fairly local, very low key, and have a great spread at the finish. Think Devil’s Burdens, but with less people and at a much warmer time of year. It’s 4 people on a team, all solo legs. Two legs are marked trails and the other two require some navigation. Carnethy usually enters several teams here and do quite well. It’s a great even if you’re new to hill racing, relay running, or both (old timers more than welcome too!) Entries for this have just opened so don’t delay too much if you’re interested in running – let us know!
Saturday 4th October – Scottish Long Coastal Relays http://carnethy.com/carnethy-organised-races/scottish-long-coastal-relays/
Organised by the one and only Mike Lynch, with lots of Carnethy helpers (so even if you don’t want to run, please come and help out). These relays are fast becoming a must-run event, with more teams each year (and records broken each year!) The race starts at midnight and runs through the day on Saturday. 6 solo runners cover legs of between 16 and 24 miles along the Fife coastal path from Kincardine to Newburgh. The path is a mixture of tarmac and trail and you have to always keep the sea on your right.
Sunday 5th October – Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay http://hbmr.org.uk/
Held in the northern lakes (which are much closer to Edinburgh than you might think!), Carnethy has one team entry for the Hodgson Brothers Mountain relay. It’s 4 legs of 2 runners each, starting and finishing in Patterdale. The navigation is easy and the maps are available online so you can also recce legs in advance. It’s a huge event and lots of fun (even if you’ve got no sleep at the coastal relays the days before!)
Sunday 19th October – British Fell Relays
These are the biggest relay event in the hill running calendar, and are hosted by a different club each year. This year it’s Dark Peak’s turn, so the race will be held down in the Peak District. We hope to enter teams in different categories depending on who is interested. There’s not much information about these at the moment, but get the date in your diary and let us know if you’re interested! Teams are usually of 6, with 2 solo legs and 2 paired (and one of the paired legs requiring navigation).
Captains’ Google sheet spreadsheet of races
There’s a lot more than just relays going on in 2019. Scottish hill racing calendar http://www.scottishhillrunners.uk/Calendar.aspx
We’ve made a google sheet with race dates and entry info for all of the Championship races and will keep this updated throughout the year. If you have any events you would like added or see something that needs editing, please let us know.
The British Championships comprise of four races, one in each home nation. You need to run a short, medium and long counter to complete the champs. Teams for these are quite large (male senior – 5, female senior – 3, male v40 – 4, male v50 – 3). We’d love to get full teams out for some of these so put the dates below in your diary now if you’re interested! Wales and Northern Ireland are great weekends away with the club. We organise accommodation and provide help with travel and logistics, and the club subsidise this. To get off to a good start in the championships we are hoping to get a big turn out in Northern Ireland to run the Mourne Highline. The Mournes are awesome hills to run in, even if you can’t see them. There is also the helpfully placed Mourne Wall (which you can see) to help you navigate in the race. Last year we had a fab weekend with the opportunity to do extra runs, eat multiple ice creams, attend the post-race drinking session and stuff ourselves with food. Read Ken’s write-up of the 2018 event in the Carnethy Journal (Summer 2018) http://carnethy.com/intro-club/club-journal/ to find out more about it. If you think this sounds like fun then we’d love for you to join us in Northern Ireland in April! Entry opens very soon and we will send a reminder about it just before.
British Championship races 2019
Sat 27th April – The Mourne Highline (Ireland, AM)
Sat 25th May – Ras Y Meolwyn (Wales, AM)
Sat 15th June – Great Lakes Race (England, AL)
Sat 3rd August – Creag Dhubh (Scotland, AS)
Note: The Mourne Highline clashes with the Yorkshire Three Peaks Race / Highland Fling, Ras Y Meolwyn clashes with Jura and Creag Dubh is the same day as Borrowdale / Devil O’ The Highalnds. Some careful race planning may be needed…
The Scottish Hill Running Championships http://www.scottishhillrunners.uk/Championship.aspx?ChampionshipID=C-001 comprise six races, 2 x long, 2 x medium, 2 x short. To complete the Championships you need to race four: one in each of the three categories and any other (if 60+ then any of the 4). If you complete you get a very snazzy mug. It looks like a year of ‘proper’ hill races so it should be a fun Championship to compete in. We’ve previously told you the Two Breweries race is on the 21st September but it is actually on Saturday 28th September, so update your calendars now!

You usually need to run half (4) of the races to qualify. A couple of these are also championship races and the Pentland Skyline is local and one of our own!

If you’ve read this far, thanks for sticking with us… and happy racing in 2019!
