History of the Race
The race began in 1992 as an adjunct to the Manor Water Sheepdog Trials that had been taking place since 1960 odd.
Originally organised by local farmer John Nash, with help from local “retired hill runner” Graham Pyatt. Graham took over the organisation after John died in 1995, and his commitment to the race has made it a well-established and loved event by locals and hill runners alike. Graham stood down as organiser in 2012.
The course has changed a little over the years. Originally it started in a field at NT212396, near Haswellsykes. In 1999 we followed the advice of runners in 1998 who suggested that the section of road (500m), at the beginning and end, could be removed by going directly across fields. In 2004 the start was moved to near Woodhouse Farm (when the sheep dog trial moved) allowing easier access to the hill and shortening the race distance. After a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic the race returned in 2022. The route was shortened slightly by moving the start to the Glack. This change takes out the road crossing and was made as a response to the Sheepdog Trial moving further up the valley. Runners now get a ~1 mile warm up jog from registration near the Old Manor School (NT 213 365) to the start at the gate to Glack Hope (NT 212 378).
Registration:
Registration takes place in the same field as the Sheepdog Trials near the Old Manor School (NT 213 365). Note this is approximately 1 mile up the valley from the “old” registration field. There will be signs posted on the day. Parking is at registration. The start is ~1 mile from registration so make sure you have enough time to make it on foot to the start field before 1 pm.
Start:
The race starts from near Woodhouse Farm (NT 212 378, on the Main Manor Valley Road). Note this is approximately 500 m up the road from the old start location (through the gate to Glack Hope). There is no parking at the start. Parking is at registration. The start is ~1 mile from registration so make sure you have enough time to make it on foot to the start field before 1 pm.

From the start near Woodhouse farm (NT 212378) just through a farm gate at the entrance to Glack Hope. The route follows a section of the waymarked John Buchan Way up Glack Hope to the drystone dyke which is crossed using the gate/stile. The route takes a left turn and follows vehicle tracks fairly close to the march dyke over White Knowe and Whitelaw Hill to the dip at ‘Dead Wife’s Grave’ (NT 189351) where a marshal is in attendance.
Continue to follow the march dyke and finally a fence to the top of Scrape hill (NT 176325) at 2348 ft. There is one section where the path leaves the dyke/fence and skirts the penultimate hill which is the recommended, but un-marked, route.
At the summit, runners must call out their race number to the marshal before turning for home, returning by the same route. Runners retiring from the race between Dead Wife’s Grave and Scrape should report to the marshal’s vehicle at Dead Wife’s Grave.
Depending on conditions the route may be marked at intervals, but self-navigation is required. The bad weather alternative course will follow the same route but the turning point, rather than being at the top of The Scrape hill, will be earlier and lower down the hill at NT181332. Any route changes will be made clear to runners before the start and a marshall will be at the new return location if applicable.
