    Cali Ingham's 50th
A large group of Runners, Dancers, Work Colleagues and Family met at Glenmore Lodge to help Cali celebrate her 50th Birthday. After a warm-up drink on Friday night we escorted Cali to the summit of Mullach Clach a'Bhlair on Saturday then had a dancing lesson before enjoying a wonderful meal and party. We recovered on Sunday by walking, tandeming, skiing and just relaxing.

    Treviso Marathon 14th March 2004
No I didnt run as a Greenpeace protestor Finito The best drinks station in the event!
This was the first Treviso Marathon ,very well organised and supported by the local populace throughout the route from Vitorio Veneto to Treviso near Venice.Crowds like the Giro D'Italia according to the press reports.
A bit early for a marathon but training on snowy tracks in the Dolomites made running on dry roads seem easier at times. Scheduled for 3hrs 20 mins but got carried away with a half way time of 1:30 .Managed to keep losses down to 5mins in the second half.Probably pay for this run in the London Marathon.
Ryanair have cheap flights to Treviso and this year at least the entry fee was refunded to finishers under 6hrs. Magnums of Prosecco make a nice change from Greenmantle Ale!.

Screel Hill Race, SHR Championship Race
What a contrast to last weekend. Cool, calm Spring weather brought out the runners, vests and shorts. There was a good Carnethy turnout, but with 4 missing the start (miscalculating the drive time) and others falling victim to the roots and rocks on the path, we had an eventful day. Jethro Lennox was so far ahead he looked to be running a different race. Brian Marshall was second and Carnethy's Stewart Whitlie third (1st vet). Helen Murray won the ladies race. There was also a good turnout for the junior race, one in the increasingly popular junior league series. A Evans of Fife won the boys and S Inglis of Lothian the girls event. Results

    Everest marathon relived
Adrian Davis, Joanne Anderson and Paula Drouet kindly relived the agony and ecstasy of the Everest Marathon for us with a slide show/talk at the Nimmo's house. Grisly accounts of 'facilities' and ailments were superceded by photos of fantastic scenery and happy faces. An informative and relaxed delivery by Adrian made for a very enjoyable evening.

    Donegal weekend- March 21st/22nd

Two legitimate Carnethies and one soon-to-be (my wife Sarah) headed to Donegal for a weekend of racing, fun and frolics. The fun started on Saturday when you quite literally couldn't stand at the start of the race on Slieve League on the west coast of Donegal. The race was abandoned as the organiser didn't want anyone being blown off the 300m sea cliffs- quite sensible really. The frollics were had on the beach at Portnoo in the afternoon and the pub in the evening with lots of wild duke box dancing from our neighbour Norman.
The Sunday race up Errigal went ahead but had to be an amended route owing to the severe winds. Rickie Simpson had "frolicked" too much and came in a disappointing 6th whilst my wife Sarah had a good run finishing 2nd woman. I didn't race but had lots of fun bog trotting at the base of Errigal supporting the others. The weekend as always was great craic and I would highly recommend the trip across.

    Criffel - March 21st
As far as I could see I was the only Carnethy at Criffel, (apologies to anyone I didn't see/speak to while cowering in the car/pub, hiding from the very stingy rain). A decent turn out of around 40 runners despite the threat of weather similar to Saturday's. The underfoot conditions were about as wet as I've seen which is saying something for this particular race. Quite hopeful of chasing just about anybody back down the hill until Brian 'Superdescender' Marshal showed up and despite my best efforts and a few impersonations of an upended turtle on a toboggan run I couldn't get near him. Well done to everybody in the race. Hope to see a big turnout for my ex-club's race at Screel on Saturday. Results

Borders Winter Series X/C – Lauder March 21st
The last in series crucial decider I was wearing vest and shorts whatever happened. Brrrr racing.
Large turn out in the junior races was heartening. Although not sure how many of the participants had to be cajoled by parents etc.
I was pleasantly surprised by a steep descent into the glen (yeehaa!) as I fell on easy prey, spike-wearing wobblers. Splish splash through the bog, I went the whole hog.

Spring Polaris 2003 - taking the bike for a walk!
Despite the severe weather warnings Angela & Adam headed down to the Yorkshire Dales at the weekend to compete in the Polaris Mountain Bike Challenge. 8am Leyburn was dull & breezy & the cyclists headed off for 7 hours of biking in a score event. 8.30am The first rainfall of the day & a few gusts of wind
By 10am The gales & torrential rain had struck. As the conditions deteriorated cycling became impossible, 70 mile an hour gusts kept blowing you off the trail into ditches, any uphill gradient was tackled at a walking pace, cycling at 45 degrees to the ground became fashionable & the granny ring was used to cycle downhill!! The rivers burst their banks & saw us wading through waist deep floods. But we managed to complete day one, somewhat late & losing most of our score - we hadn't counted on having to push our bikes against the cross wind the last few miles to get to the campsite! Only 20% of teams made it to the overnight camp.
Day 2 dawned bright & breezy & cycling even looked vaguely tempting. However, the organisors had different ideas and cancelled day 2, the first time ever for this event.

SAL EGM - to raise fees for individual members
QUALIFIED SUCCESS FOR SAL AT EGM
You wouldn’t think the EGM of SAL could spend a full two hours deciding whether or not to raise individual members’ subscriptions by around £2 a head, but it did. Mind you, the meeting was quite entertaining in the broad sense of the word, with moments of chaos, a dash or two of spleen and the drama of a tied vote.
A (sensible) motion by Lothian to postpone the whole thing until members had been given a fuller insight into SAL’s finances was despatched into the long grass, inevitably followed by a plea from Helensburgh to reduce subscriptions instead of raising them. That left a motion from Lochaber, identical to SAL’s except that Lochaber had remembered what SAL had apparently forgotten, namely the existence of senior unattached members.

Here’s what happened to the various proposals:
Senior Club Members – raise fee from £13 to £15; carried by 172 to 132 votes
Junior Club Members – raise fee from £8 to £10; tied at 150 votes apiece
Coaches and Officials – raise fee from £13 to £15; carried by 167 to 133 votes
Friends and Supporters – raise fee from £13 to £15; carried by 159 to 139 votes
Family Members – raise fee from £25 to £30; carried by 170 to 131 votes
Senior Unattached Members – raise fee from £25 to £27; carried by 236 to 41 votes.

All the increases therefore go through, except that for Junior Club Members, with effect from 1 April 2004. SAL pledged at the outset to make no changes for 1 April 2005 if it got its way, so it’ll be interesting to see what’s put forward fee-wise at the next AGM. In round terms SAL has 6500 individual members of whom 3150 are juniors, so today’s increases will raise around £7k instead of the £13k SAL needs.

    Chapelgill
Fourteen brave (or foolhardy - depending on your view) souls tackled Chapelgill in gale force winds and rain. My heart went out to the marshall on the summit who was holding on to the fence to stay on her feet. At least, with only 14 of us, we weren't too spread out. Ewan Jardine of Moorfoots was 1st in 24:13 with Mike Georghan (a junior), Dundee RR, 2nd in 27:10 and Don Reid (1st vet) 3rd in 27:59. I was 1st (and only ) lady (it's the only way I get among the medals these days). The race was short enough to make the horrendous conditions an exciting challenge but I wouldn't have enjoyed it if it had been much longer!

    Wednesday night three..four-some
KB was deserted and I was about to leave when Gordon appeared, similarly confused about the lack of folk. We were about to set off on a "bog standard" plod when Willie G appeared to introduce spice. Too tired, I decided not to run all the way to Cali's but the ensuing debate about lack of Wednesday runners made me feel guilty so I hung on as we jogged over starlit golf courses, back alleys and the bypass, to Swanston. Allermuir felt like Ben Nevis and the wind was freezing so just as well I had a vest only on! Willie's phone broke-up as we tried to locate Cali who was walking to meet us and then ran out of credit on the summit, but after more ice cold debate we spotted her torch towards Castlelaw. She was found, freezing and we ambled downwards, Gordon having a violent encounter with a fallen fence, followed shortly after by a (subtle?) 20 foot fallen tree, with dagger like branches. We defrosted over beer and expanded our "biological vocabulary" aided by Cali's veterinary knowledge and Gordon's new found high voice. A different evening...

    Hebridean Challenge 5th-9th July
A message from the race director - Jon Brooke
"Every year there are several Carnethy Hill Runners on various teams in the race (but we'd always be happy to have more!) and this year it looks like we will have both strong team and solo races. Full info is on the website at www.hebrideanchallenge.com or potential competitors without teams can contact stephanie@hebrideanchallenge.com
    BUT...
If you are interested in entering please note that we have come to the following decision: Pressure for spaces on ferries and in accommodation is hotting up and some of our logistics arrangements are proving a bit more expensive in high tourist season. But the earlier we have your entries, the more we are able to negotiate to keep prices low - so we are offering the following incentive to those of you who we know are at the 'organising' stage. This is an encouraging little nudge to please get a move on and make our lives, and your own, very much easier!
The present VERY CHEAP entry prices of £300 per team, £100 per solo will last till Easter w/e only. After that all entry forms will need to be accompanied by £350 per team and £125 per solo - this reflects the extra costs we expect to have if we cannot book things by then.
Our current Lo-Lo prices are unlikely to be seen again, so please make the most of them!
    "

    Inverness Half Marathon, 14th March
Runners at the Inverness Half Marathon faced all weather conditions, generally windy, rather hot sun halfway round (14C) and freezing cold rain towards the finish. Angela led the way in the womens race, sneeking under 80mins with a 79.59. Simon Pride showed the mens field a clean pair of heals from the gun, only two weeks after runing 2.19 in the Seville Marathon. Three Carnethy men (Mark, Adam and Garry) made the top eleven, running in white, brown (yuk!) and yellow vests respectively.

    LAIRIG MOR RACE - 6 March 2004
The sheet ice that had covered the ground a few days earlier had all melted, leaving a fine running surface. Above us the icing sugary snow covered summits of the Mamores were in-and-out of the misty clouds swirling round at the 3,000 foot level. It would have been an interesting day for a Ramsay Round attempt.... Down below, though, the immediate entertainment was this 14 mile run from Mamore Lodge, above Kinlochleven, to Fort William. Davie all-on-his-own-at-the-front Rodgers finished within seconds of the record - no-one seemed to know if it was just within or just without. At any rate, it was very close. Meanwhile, for me, several miles in his wake, it was a PW. But never mind - I had a good excuse (honest!), and was well pleased with how it went.

Night Run From Cali's (belated report due to Chicken Pox)
There was a low turnout for the last nightrun of the season with only 6 club members and 2 guests at Cali's. Maybe the rainstorm at the last nightrun had put people off but it turned out to be a much better night weatherwise with no need for waterproofs. A shortish run taking in Hillend, Caerketton, Allermuir and Castlelaw was followed by a sumptuous meal at Cali's where we were joined by Roger, Bill and Cathy ( reprsenting Willie who is out of action - keep away from him - with chickenpox!! ). Where were the rest of you ?

'Spring is sprung the grass is ris,
I wonder were all the Carnethies is?'

    A good afternoon out.
I think I spotted 6 others at the Bishop Hill race on March 7th -apologies for my inability to know or recognise other club members. The field was awash with Westies though- must be on their Summer League fixture list. As far as I know, none of us won the senior race, none of us came last and we all enjoyed it. This race embodies all that we should treasure about Scottish Hill running- it is friendly and low key with everyone getting a cheer as they whizzed (or in my case, wheezed) across the line. Happily you get to walk a good way up the hillside before you reach the start, but the general nature of the course might be described as being suitable mental preparation for Chapelgill- straight up, straight down, no messing. The up is distressingly run-able, although the lower reaches follow a track through the gorse making overtaking a bit tricky. Unfortunately, I lacked the necessary fitness to run the run-able bits. Good descent though. This race has the added bonus of leaving participants free to enjoy the rest of the day, for with winning times under 20 minutes, even donkeys like me can safely avoid benightment and make it home in time for tea.

Borders Cross Country Series - St Abbs (3.8 miles)
The rain cleared and blue skies and such warmth out of the wind. The gorse was emitting its tropical (coconut odours) - sweet.
Fifth race in Borders series, St Abbs not exactly on the cliff tops but some fine views a hilly route - nothing too tricky for descents but gave me the edge I needed.

    Lasswade 10mile Road Race
What better way to test if a week of flu has properly subsided than by spluttering your way round a hilly 10 miler!? Despite wondering if I would make the jog to the start I gained strength when having to decide whether to become 6th lady or go for to three girls ahead to become 3rd, at the 5th mile. Nose drip subsiding I went for the competitive option and busted a gut to keep in 3rd place, by 9 seconds. This is a great hill runners road race with steep, scenic drops into and out of Roslin Glen and Auchendinny, generally on smaller roads.

It was misty all night and the underfoot conditions were very wet with some runners needing their 3 team mates to pull them out of the myre on Bleaklow.
It is strange none of the teams got lost this year. Is the Club's navigation improving or are we just getting better at finding locals to join our teams?

    Woodhouselee Night Run
The last night run of the season turned out to be spookily atmospheric. Going up the back of Caerketton the patchy mist reflected our torch lights back making it difficult to see the ground at our feet let alone around and about. The mist and cloud cleared on top of Allermuir and gave us the usual fantastic night view of Edinburgh and then we returned to Woodhouselee via Castlelaw without getting wet! Cali laid on a scrumptious spread which was eagerly devoured by the runners and non-runners alike. Next run is the 'surprise' 21st Anniversary Handicap.

Glentress Duathlon: Susan Gray wins Ladies & Stewart Whitlie wins Vet Titles
Chris Smith nears the summit Susan Gray receives Ladies trophy
The final (Long) Duathlon gave an exciting end to the local mountain bike/hillrunning series. The Long race was won by newcomer Chris Smith, who came from behind on the run (8th) to take first on the day. Ladies winner was Jill Tait, with Stuart Whitlie as first Vet 40 year old. First Team was Emma Guy (The Hub) with runner Kate Jenkins.
An excellent last race saw both the Male and Female trophies decided on only a few places in the final race. The Male Vet trophy was more of a certainty with three excellent performances by Stuart Whitlie.
The Male trophy was taken by Andrew Wardman from the Hub to give a popular win for the Local man who works at Glentress. Alasdair Anthony put up a brave effort, but being new to mountain biking was not as comfortable in the icy conditions found on some parts of the course, which was adapted to two low level loops for safety.
The Female trophy was a hard fought duel between local ladies , Susan Gray (Carnethy), and last year’s winner, Suzanne Gilchrist. Susan won by a few points and gave us a great end to the series. While various other ladies competed, and gave strong performances, Susan ensured that the trophy remains in the Borders for another year. Results and photos

    27th Keswick / Buttermere Round - 15 Feb 2004
Completely clear blue sky; no wind; the temperature just above freezing; Derwentwater and the northern Lake District area looked stunning; spirits could not fail to be well and truly uplifted in such surroundings! The 22 mile race was hilly - with over 3,000ft / 950 m. of ascent including the 1:4 climbs up Honister Pass (after about 8 miles) and Newlands Pass (after about 14 miles) - albeit on very minor t_rmac r_ads. Several folk seemed to be doing the race as a "training run" for the London marathon - though the scenery and 'ambience' could hardly be more different. Sheep, hens, a pheasant, and even an ermine coated stoat shared road space with us along the route. In the event, there were runaway victories for both Steve Littler and Karen Heaviside - he finished less than half a minute adrift of the 1982 vintage record time. 82 finished within the 4 hour limit. If you fancy a really scenic hilly r_ad race, (and the weather is kindly disposed!), I'd strongly recommend this one!

    Flotterstone Night Run
Before The Deluge After the deluge Fourteen stalwart runners set off from Flotterstone on the annual pre-Carnethy Five night run. The clear sky and full moon gave no inkling of what was to come. At the top of Turnhouse Hill it began to rain but as we climbed Carnethy the skies opened up into torrential rain of gothic proportions with gale-force winds. It was rather like running through a car-washing machine. As soon as the last runner reached the top we fled down the not-the-Carnethy-Five screes as fast as possible. By the time we reached Charlie's Loup the rain had stopped and the moon came out again. A pleasant low-level run by moonlight followed, back to the start, although it was very wet & muddy underfoot. The evening was rounded off by a good meal in the Flotterstone Inn and a birthday cake, complete with candles, for Jill's birthday.

    Tough Guy 2004
A race with a difference - 6 miles of good XC followed by 2 miles of army assault course, including submersions, crawling under barbs, climbing ropes, running through fire and the best lots of mud! Not designed for the 'upper body challenged' like myself!
I managed to finish 12th on the run and then work backwards through the field to finish 40th and freezing cold, on a relatively warm day. Susan Gray finished 1529 and enjoyed every second of it, whilst Geriant (suffering from a bug) was chief cheerleader for the day and gave me lots of verbal abuse!!
A great fun race - so how about Carnethy Team honours in 2005?

4km National Championships, Bellahouston Park. 1st February.
Carnethy ladies won a commendable 2nd on Sunday on an extremely mushy course, nicely chewed up as we were off last. Even newish Innovates didn't hold firm and I seemed to be using double the energy. Jill's leg 3 Burden's diversion didn't seem to effect her at all and she had a fantastic run as did Lyn. For me, though, I left my legs somewhere on leg 4, or perhaps on the return jog to my car (where it was nice to find some eejit had smashed into it) on the snow covered road. A good race but about 148km too short for me. Apparently great spectator stuff with Freya Murray and Liz McColgan battling it out. Edinburgh Woolen Mill won.

    Devil's Burdens
The blizzard conditions made this year's race a real test and several teams (including ours) lost out with navigational errors. So much for the beautifully-laminated route map each runner was given, courtesy of the club! report and results

    Mull Weekend
John and Serena Coyle looked after us very well on the Club Mull weekend. Fourteen of us made the trip over. On Saturday we went over to Kilhoan to run over the Ardnamurchan Hills. It was a lovely day with beautiful views and the odd very painful hail storm, but not as painful as Cali's knee after she twisted it again. On Saturday evening we all sat down to a very good meal and good banter with Tim and Hilary using the supplied couches for a good sleep.
On the Sunday we set off west along the coast from Tobemory in beautiful sunshine and had exceptional views. Then it was back to Chez Coyle for the leftovers from Saturday's meal.
We listened to John on the radio talking about Ben More.

    Burns Supper
The Pritchards hosted this wonderful evening of food and entertainment. Thanks to everyone who 'took the floor' and especially those who performed the speeches - Olly Stephenson (Immortal Memory), Robin Haynes (Toast the Lassies) and Kate Friend (Reply). The hidden creative talents in Carnethy no longer surprise me! Thanks to Colin and Ann for allowing the invasion of their home. Report

    Glentress Short Duathlon
Another excellent event with a very good turnout (63) despite the weather. Snow on the upper tracks gave a bit of excitement, but all competitors returned safe and sound from both bike and run. Thanks to the 20 odd souls who braved the weather to marshall or assist at transition. Results

    East Districts Cross Country
Carnethy Ladies showed the opposition a clear pair of heels at the East District Cross Country Championships at the weekend. The team finished in first place on this fast course, after last weeks rain we were hoping for a mud bath, but were sadly disappointed!!
Angela went with Liz McColgans early pace and was burnt off quite rapidly, whilst everyone else was sensible and had good runs.

    Greenmantle Dash
Sub zero temperatures made excellent conditions for the crushed velvet dress and hunter wellies, although I felt a bit lonely in fancy dress this year until Alan McDonald turned up in his full police gear having not changed from his night shift! Santa and Old woman "Aggie" (Isobel Knox) were there too for company.
Fortunately the icy burn did not fill the wellies allowing for a lung burning beast across the bog and up the hill with Helen Murray hot on my heels. The wellies came into their own on the descent and along the road, actually setting a new course record! Several hours of soup and chat followed before a beery prize giving.

Despite feeling sleepy, vaguely hungover and heavy on the warm up I was fine once the adrenaline got flowing and enjoyed a bracing beast along the sea front. Despite gathering strength the several gins of yesterday prevented me catching C. Milne of Lothian- good excuse anyway.
