Carnethy Club Pandemicap Series & Reports 2021
Previous Years’ Handicaps
2021 socially distanced handicaps will take place from April to September. There will be a series of events every month (maximum 6 events) of 18 days duration with a 10 day gap between them.
Members are given a predicted time for each course – see Google Sheet link by each race. The member that can improve their time the most will win the event.
You will be able to run the course as many times as you like within the 18 day period. You will need to record your best time by the end of the 18 days (links below). Please post your Strava/gpx – we’d like to see if you run the route correctly!
Sub-races: These will be on Wednesdays – details in circulated emails. Sign up here if you want to enjoy some racing – your start time will be 6.30pm + your handicap time.
Next handicap recce: Sign up here
Photos: Take some photos! Send them to kenfordyce70@gmail.com for the report.
Points will be awarded to the finishers depending on the time percentage behind the winner of each event. If you complete 3 or more courses your best 3 combined points will be totalled and you will have a chance to be 2021 champion, awarded the handicap trophy and some other prize(s).
Contact Handicapper Andy Lamont for first timers who need a handicap, let him know your best 5K and/or 10K times – and let him know how often you run in the hills; (or for any other handicapping questions) – hcap@carnethy.com
PS – don’t underestimate your ability to get lost! Print out the map, read the route notes and bring a compass. If in any doubt buddy up or bring a phone. At least you have a lot of time to recce the courses!
Within the time period of the handicap (see below) you need to:
Fill in the Google Sheet (see link next to race) with details (name, time, comments etc.).
Send any pics to kenfordyce70@gmail.com (these will be collated for a race report).

This year we will try something new – teams
With 4 virtual teams, automatically allocating individuals to 1 of 4 teams, and summing up team results with individual results. The main participants from last year would be allocated evenly amongst these teams, then everyone else. Newbies would be allocated to the losing team throughout the series to try and boost the teams potential points, especially the bonus.
The idea is runners are not just running as an individual, their performance would also contribute to their team.
This format is still being worked out so may change altogether!

Handicap Reports 2021Scroll down for individual race results and reports
Going Viral via Capelaw – results & reportDistance: 7.25km | Ascent: 470m | Duration: 19 days | Feature: metal pipe | Runners: 80 Nicola Dunn’s course was a “great course a good mix of everything.” according to Sam, couldn’t agree more. The first handicap times were also a “mix of everything” that was predictable, due to lack of race results and a course that turned out to be shorter and quicker than predicted. Finding your own shortest route between checkpoint 4 & 5 was the crux of the challenge to save valuable minutes/seconds on your time. 57 runners did beat their handicap well above the 38% average from 2020. Expect tougher times to come… Handicap – Top 3 places:

You are clearly a kind-hearted club, not wanting to write too much about the moments of loathing. A lot of people used the word ‘fun’ although more in relation to the route than actually running it. Many of you mentioned again being surprised to find new paths you hadn’t run before. I particularly liked the highly random curving path down to Duddingston. Some ran in the haar so did very well just to get around. Others enjoyed racing again (if you want to race for the next one, sign up here). But it was good to see a few people speak honestly: ‘Definitely prefer the Edinburgh Park Run’. Others with a good dose of irony may be giving away their true thoughts: “Really enjoyed the section from the bush to the sleeper steps.” “I thought the part through the car park was a bit easy”. We can certainly say it was an excellent, demanding, lung-busting, rollercoaster course – thank you to Eóin. Since time immemorial, there have been Handicap excuses (“I did reps yesterday”, “just had my dinner”, “the handicapper has it in for me”, etc.). We now have the new “I had my jab yesterday” excuse to add to the list, and even pre-run acupuncture – not sure if these two refer to the same thing. Others seem to be claiming they should have had a better handicap due to short legs in relation to the sleeper steps. And then there’s Hyman’s Knoll and the descent to the car park, which clearly had its challenges. Andy Spenceley came across a wedding party on its top, and Hilary Spenceley kindly sent in some background information which confirmed another source saying that it is name in honour of Martin Hyman, who passed away recently. Hilary writes: “I’d hazard a guess that Hyman’s knoll is named after Martin Hyman who died recently. He planned the courses for the World Mt Running Trophy in 1995 [information here] and the knoll was visited by at least some of the courses. In recent years Martin has been best known for the Tues Intervals session on the Meadows which he organised for over 40 years, for young- junior races eg at Tinto and Chapelgill, and he was on the HRC. Going back 30 years he organised Thursday evening interclub training form Meggetland, and several great interclub challenges eg 2 Breweries Relay from Broughton to Cockermouth and I think a Speyside Way relay.” Also, a welcome to Kit Craig, this was his first Carnethy Race. Quite the race to start with! Finally, the photo competition on the theme of Going Wrong. Entries rose by 300% from the first one, so that was three. Two of them deserve points/prizes: Nikki Dunn and Kathy Henly and their dog putting a lot more effort into their photos than their run, and Stephen Croft demonstrating the challenges of recce-ing this route. And finally no points for the third entry from El Presidente whose ‘Going Wrong’ appears to be submitting the photo to the wrong competition. (Mark, how about this Tulip Fest?). Of course, any captions for this photo are very welcome, and apologies if you find it a bit disturbing. Next up is Digby’s Carnethycap, yet another fabulous route.

There were some sections designed to slow you down as noticed by runners: If you take away the big hills, individuals on average do perform considerable better in faster handicap courses. This might go some way to explain how so many beat their handicap. Overall, this was a good result for runners… not so good for the Handicapper. The next handicap is a true hill runners’ route so expect shift in results. Handicap – Top 3 places: Congratulations to Michael Wilkinson the Irn-Braid winner. After running the course 3 times and taking advantage of the extended deadline this was shift up the gears from his Carnethycap time.
Championship leader: Hilary Spenceley Hilary now leads the championship with the best 3 points total from the 4 handicaps routes. Ladies – Fastest course times This was a farewell run for Elizabeth who is moving to a flatter part of the country, will be missed by the club.
Gentlemen – Fastest course times James has recorded the fastest time for the second course in a row. A very quick middle section up to Braids top made the difference.

Pandemicap 5 – Scalded By Law Results & ReportDistance: 7.7km | Ascent: 630m | Duration: 26 days | Feature: heather | Runners: 35 Two big climbs made this route one of the toughest of the series, even 4-legged Amber found it tough going. Barra on the other hand was up for a sprint finish at the end of the Wednesday race. Many agreed with Amber but there were a lot of fans of the course. “Brutal. Legs turned to jelly by the end” says Steve Handicap – Top 3 places: Congratulations to Michelle the handicap winner. Michelle’s advice for success: “forget what you learnt on the recces, just use completely different, bad trods”. The direct descent off Scald Law maybe one such trod, which did seem to save some time but perhaps not your legs.
Championship leader: Sharon Bergeret Sharon now leads the championship going into the final event at Arthur’s Seat. 8 runners can still win the championship. The googlesheet Championship shows the remaining ‘championship contenders’ in the last column. Ladies – Fastest course times
Gentlemen – Fastest course times

Pandemicap #6 Arthur’s Seat and final championship resultsDistance: 5.70km | Ascent: 365m | Duration: 28 days | Feature: A real race | Runners: 38 The final day of September marked the end of the 2021 Pandemicap series. The series did go out with a bang with a final Wednesday race on the classic Arthur’s Seat route. Morag – “A real handicap race! And a social in the pub afterwards – what’s not to like?” Nicki Innes who won Arthur’s Seat in 2020, won the Wednesday race, recording a significantly better time than last year. Pete Cain who started race late could have come 2nd but still benefitted from racing – “Took 3 minutes off first attempt by doing the race”. 27 ran in the Wednesday race, results are available on the google sheet Arthur’s Seat Wed Race 29 Sept. The Holyrood still offered the usual navigation challenges. Andrew – “The top of Whinny remaining elusive. Nice evening with loads of people out!”. Rob decided to add Nether hill for some extra distance. Some advice from Sharon – “If in doubt just keep left”. 71% beat their Arthur’s Seat handicap, almost identical to Capelaw, but lower than the 84% on the fast “flat” Braids course. Comparing 2020 to 2021 Arthur’s Seat shows 75% improved on their time, almost certainly helped by the race. Thanks to Richard for sorting the post-race social at The Royal Dick and big thanks to Ken for all his timely Carnethy communications throughout the Pandemicap series. Note to webbers: to keep the generic link to handicaps page as /handicaps/ at year end clone this page as handicaps-*year* with Parent ‘handicaps’, edit the permalink adding in the year eg /handicaps-2018 and add the link to the drop down dates and update immediately (otherwise you get erroneous year link; do this in the text editor otherwise more weirdness happens). Then edit this page to reflect the new current year. Don’t change the (hidden) title or the link will change.
