Carnethy Club Handicap Series & Reports 2022
Previous Years’ Handicaps
What is the Carnethy handicap series? – It is 6 courses in and around Edinburgh/Lothian area created by Carnethy club members. 1 course is run each month between April and September.
Each course will have a timed race on a Wednesday evening. You will also have the chance to run the course over a 2-week period in your own time and self-record.
Final date in range is actual handicap race (if you are doing it) and final virtual time submission.
Emails with details will be sent out ahead of each course start, so you don’t miss out. There will be organised recces for each route.
How do I take part and get a handicap? – If you have a handicap already it will be posted on a Googlesheet ahead of each course start date. If you cannot find your name on the Googlesheet please email hcap@carnethy.com to get a handicap. Include your current predicted flatter 10k or 5k time and/or race result link(s).
Who do I contact? – Any handicap queries please contact Handicapper Andy Lamont hcap@carnethy.com. For post-race social queries please check emails for contact(s).

Handicap Reports 2022Scroll down for individual race results and reports Handicap #1 Woodhouselee report and resultsDistance: 9.4km | Ascent: 420m | Duration: 15 days | Race: 64 | Total runners: 81 Course designer Ken got quite excited to see the Woodhouselee top had gained a wooden pole in the second week, thanks to unknown runner. This may have been a sign of people taking things seriously or just afraid of their own nav. Some great feedback from runners on the course. A fence and cows did create some challenge. Imogen: “Thanks Ken for a fun route! lots of fun running with everyone” The turnout for the race was a near record. Only 1 short of the 2019 Arthur’s Seat which had 65. Blessed with good weather and good mix of runners, it was classic handicap race. If you want to know your race position, see race only results on Googlesheet. The overall results are here on website and the Googlesheet, this includes both virtual and race times. Thanks to Ken for his Woodhouselee vision and arranging the post social at Cibo. Thanks to volunteers Willie and Declan for recording the race. There was 1 injury in the race, hopefully Phil recovers and back in the hills soon. Handicap – Top 3 places:
Ladies – Fastest course time
Gents – Fastest course time

Some photos from the evening. Apologies for those who are missing due to my poor camera work (but now I’ve had an excellent camera photo tutorial from Peter Macdonald that won’t happen next time!). Ken Fordyce Handicap #2 Holyrood Captains’ (Special) Choice report and resultsDistance: 6.75km | Ascent: 500m | Duration: 15 days | Race: 49 | Total runners: 63 Great work by Kirsty creating a new course in Holyrood to test who’s worthy of a wooden coaster. This course had fast descents combined with very steep climbs, Crow hill yikes! The final race evening weather turned out to be one of the best of the duration. With Carnethy legend Bill Gauld watching on runners needed to show we haven’t slowed down too much or become soft. Racing really does help, Alex Kinninmonth proved this point taking a whopping 5 minutes off his virtual attempt. The usual Whinny nav problems were on clear display at finish, with some runners missing the final steps coming down path further up to no advantage. It was the first trial of the new wooden coaster (non-bib) system. Hopefully no wooden coasters went home. Big thanks to Clare, Alison and Michael for helping at the end. Any feedback welcome. Also, thanks to Ken for his continued communication and John for arranging Bonnie & Wild. Good selection of foods from east PIZZAS and other outlets. Everyone appeared to have mastered the ordering process in the end, happy with beer and food. Wee shout out to John Morris and partner on birth of their daughter this week. John was given a very special pass so he could race Wednesday evening. All the best to the family. Lots of photos from Norman Brown to be found on the Carnethy Facebook group page Handicap – Top 3 places: Well done Catherine the overall and race winner. Coming in under the handicap radar to claim the maximum 50 points. Last month’s winner Alison has shown winning can be curse for the next month. Steve was the best of the virtual runners, getting second overall, helped by some favourable winds and 10km race training this month.
Championship Leader: Lizzie Knox. Early championship lead means peaked too soon? Ladies – Fastest course times Solo and very hot effort by Sophie-Elise was rewarded with the fastest lady’s time. Nicola said she’d struggle on this course, tired legs from her win at Cateran Trail 55 miler on the weekend, that prediction was wrong. Gents – Fastest course times

Andy Lamont Handicap #3 Scald Law and Topless Carnethy report and results Distance: 8.2km | Ascent: 575m | Duration: 22 days | Race: 37 | Total runners: 49 The Alan Renvoo 🙂 fan club liked it: Michelle: “Solo effort to try and avoid falling on my broken finger. Love this route.” The Handicapper fan club like the numbers: Pete: “Uncanny match to predicted time. Very close to first recce moving time.” Wednesday was a fine night for a race, bit blustery which was good for the running temperature. Some mammoth efforts saw many beating their handicap time, impressive stuff. This is not usually the case on these steep courses. Thanks to Declan and Bryan for finish line support and Lizzie in the Social team arranging the post-race food.
Championship Leader: Lizzie Knox. 20 have now completed all courses at the halfway stage. Your best 3 runs count. The eventual winner could still be somewhere far down the table. Ladies – Fastest course times
Gents – Fastest course times
Those looking for more of a breakdown on data see Google sheet. Just 2 weeks to wait for handicap #4, check out the website handicap page for details. Handicap #4 Meldons report and resultsDistance: 6km | Ascent: 475m | Duration: 15 days | Race: 22 | Total runners: 25 “An electrifying route! Zapped by the electric fence twice” reported Alison. “A death trap with cows looking to kill Carnethy red vests” according to Nicola. Neil the club Treasurer had not paid the farmer the promised 20 shillings to turn the electric fence off and keep the cows off the racing lines. Mark aka El Matador was one of the front runners up the last hill – “Cracking route, lots of veg and cows to dodge. Did it 21 mins faster in 2015. Boo.” This was not a fast year, no one came close to beating their handicap. In theory since it’s not a new course it should be easier to estimate. The course averages in past were much quicker. The average for example in May 2011 was under 43 minutes, wow. The sun was still shining for a well-earned post-race BBQ. Mark supplied his BBQ bucket, which has been in the Hartree family for decades. Thanks to Declan and Ken for finish line support and photos. Handicap – Top 3 places: Congratulations Craig Hogg, the race and overall winner this month. Having reached the last summit of Black Meldon with only a narrow lead, Craig ran an excellent descent avoiding being caught by Bryan and Andy.
Championship Leader: Lizzie Knox remains the leader counting the 3 best runs from 4. Only 12 runners have now completed all 4 handicaps. Ladies – Fastest course times Downhill specialist Lizzie recorded the quickest time. No rest after racing on both Saturday and Sunday.
Gents – Fastest course times Bryan recorded the best time of the day. A good choice of line at the start and solid up and down Black Meldon nearly got him the win.

Those looking for more of a breakdown on data see Google sheet. The next handicap in August will be a more runnable course starting at Bonaly. Check out the handicap webpage for details. Handicap #5 Bonaly-loop report and resultsDistance: 8.25km | Ascent: 420m | Duration: 15 days | Race: 44 | Total runners: 54 Steve: “A real ‘full gas’ kinda route.” We had a few guest runners. Harry Waterhouse from Australia, who looks like Bob, sounds like Bob, but is his twin brother. Mark managed to convince a lady who had just finished a run to join the handicap. Still in road shoes and turned out to be rather good. A future Carnethy member perhaps. The top handicap finishers were mainly made up of Backmarkers from the previous handicap at Meldons. The Meldons handicap meltdown had thrown the numbers all over the place. Most were zapped by the electric fence in Meldons, so deserved a bit of Bonaly glory. Thanks to the Forrest team, Margaret and Catherine for finish line support. Loads of photos from Eóin, Lucy and Margaret are on Carnethy Facebook page. Big thanks to Mark for arranging a great post-race venue at the Colinton Inn. Handicap – Top 3 places: Congratulations Alex on the win. This was a significant better run than Meldons and one of the faster run times around the course. Ken continues to do well at predicting winners.
The 2022 Handicap Championship: Lizzie Knox still leads, just. 18 runners can still win the championship with only Arthurs Seat remaining. This is because their 2 best scores are within 50 points (the max score per course) of Lizzie’s current high 127.8 points. Only your 3 best runs count in the championship. 11 have completed all 5 courses. Ladies – Fastest course times
Gents – Fastest course times Sasha clocked fastest time with a solo run Tuesday. Ali the orienteers went the wrong way at start, apparently this doesn’t happen if he has a map.
Those looking for more of a breakdown on data see Google sheet. The next handicap up Arthur’s Seat is the final one of the 2022 series. Check out the handicap webpage for details. Andrew Lamont Handicap #6 Arthur’s Seat and final championship results
Distance: 5.70km | Ascent: 365m | Duration: 15 days | Race: 51 | Runners: 56 Arthur’s Seat classic was the final handicap of the 2022 series. It was a good turnout on a sunny final day and few virtual runners adding to the total. Richard: “Edinburgh is a lucky city to have a route like this in the centre of the city”. 10 runners completed all 6 courses in the series. President Mark might have been one of them had he not got injured a few weeks ago. 135 runners completed at least one.
The handicap series wouldn’t be possible without support from many, including Ken, the social team, Mark, Declan, Pippa, course creators, Committee, and other individuals on race day, participants as well, thank you all. Loads of race photos are on the Carnethy Group Facebook page. Several of the handicap prizes were donated kindly by Carnethy members: Socks from Moggans, courtesy of owner Alistair Crawford. Pizza from east PIZZAS, courtesy of owner Roly Simpson. Book, courtesy of author Jonny Muir. Arthur’s Seat Handicap – Top 3 places: Congratulations Polly Edwards who has won the final handicap. David Webb was first over the line in Wednesday race but since Polly started race late, with adjustment comes out on top. There was a good final sprint in the race as David and Richard appeared from opposite sides of St. Margaret’s Loch. The race only results are on the Googlesheet. The overall result is here on the website and Googlesheet.
Handicap Champion Our 2022 Carnethy handicap champion is Rachel Kennedy. Rachel looked as surprised as the Handicapper to take victory. Having only run in 3 of the 6 races the odds of scoring well in all 3 are stacked against you. Most of the top championship runners have run all 6. In the end there was a very fine margin to winning the championship. Lizzie would have needed to have run Arthur’s Seat about 1min 30secs quicker than did to win, which would have improved own score and reduced Rachel’s score. If Rachel had run about 40 seconds slower at Arthur’s Seat, Rachel would not have won the championship, regardless of Lizzie’s time or position. [Lizzie may not have wanted to read that]. Gordon and Alison had tough final handicaps, so were unable to get close to improving score. There is a handicap trophy, that usually makes its way to the champion by the club AGM in November. Note to webbers: to keep the generic link to handicaps page as /handicaps/ at year end clone this page as handicaps-*year* with Parent ‘handicaps’, edit the permalink adding in the year eg /handicaps-2018 and add the link to the drop down dates and update immediately (otherwise you get erroneous year link; do this in the text editor otherwise more weirdness happens). Then edit this page to reflect the new current year. Don’t change the (hidden) title or the link will change.
