4 Carnethies ran the Cape Wrath Marathon on Saturday, May 17th. This race is 22 miles out and back to the lighthouse on Cape Wrath, the most north-westerly point of mainland Britain, and includes a timed-out ferry crossing before the remaining 4.2 miles to the village of Durness. Although officially a road race, the track on the Cape is very rough, and there is over 2,500 feet of climb overall. It is a very low key and super-friendly race (only 84 finishers) which is part of a week-long series of races including a half-marathon, a 10 mile trail race and a time-target beach run.
We have been there every year since the inaugural race in 2002, and the newly installed “Honours Board” shows previous winners to include Carnethies Jonathan Whitehead and Lucy Colquhoun. Winner this year was Sam O’Neill from Imperial College in a new record of 2h 50m 12s and first female Lily Dyu from Hay Hotfooters in 3h 45m 55s, 17th overall.
For Carnethy, Sally Cross once again was first Vet50 female, 4th female and 44th overall. Other Carnethies were Andrew Corrigan in 20th, Ian Jackson in 70th and Ina Donat in 72nd.
