The Tinto Junior Hill Race once again offered a fine cameo to a day of record-breaking hill racing in South Lanarkshire. Having refined negotiating-a-kissing-gate manoeuvres, 14 junior runners watched the ‘grown-ups’ sweep by before being sent uphill to chase them down. Racers were turned at a mystery location, which was not the summit but definitely not where it was last year, beginning the long descent to the finish. Inspired, as ever, by the example of the late Martin Hyman, the race was (mostly) embraced and enjoyed by all who took part. (I only saw two children crying, although I sense a couple of parents might also have cried were it socially acceptable to do so.) Thomas Arnott and Rowan Lennox were first boy and girl across the line, while Euan Grant-Pantrey claimed third overall, proving at least one Grant-Pantrey can stay on their feet. (Rowan repeated her overall second place of last year, albeit in a time nearly four minutes slower; I don’t think Rowan is slowing down, so sorry – the course was a little longer this year. Character-building, etc.) There is not a team competition at the junior race. If there was a siblings race, however, Siblings Arnott were dominant winners from Siblings Coombs, with Siblings King-Hall and Siblings Coakley roughly equal. Nor is there a family competition, but if there was, the award goes to Family Lennox, with Rowan’s performance complemented by two Lennox family finishers in the main race. Rita King-Hall won the unofficial Martin Hyman Prize for smiling the most as she crossed the finish line. She’ll learn…
