Saturday saw me finally start my 2015 racing campaign at the Cragside 10k. This is a scenic loop off the impressive Cragside estate near Rothbury in Northumberland, including a cut through the courtyard of the main house (the first house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric power). There were a record 356 runners, with daughter number one (Ellie) the only other Carnethy runner. Although less than 2 hours from Edinburgh there were no visible Scottish vests – cross border raiding is not what it used to be. The route includes a 140m ascent between 4.5 and 8km, but some good downhill to compensate. I improved on my 2012 time and Ellie was 11th Senior Woman – although as a 16 year old she’s not very senior. I now need to find a second race in October to round the campaign off.
