Carnethy Hill Racing Club had 5 runners/riders in the 53rd Three-peaks Cyclo-cross on Sunday AND all five of them finished. The race takes in the three summits of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent with a total distance of 38miles and 5000ft of climbing. The five Carnethies were Nick Williamson, Jon Ascroft, Bob Johnson, Craig O’Donnell and Mike “small change” Lynch. Nick and Mike doing the race for the first time and, at the other end of the scale, Bob completing his 20th. Results attached with complete time breakdown in comparison to the first five overall (ouch).
Nick punctured descending the second hill, Whernside, with Jon doing exactly the same except puncturing again shortly afterwards (Ed: pump the bu99er up more next time). Bob, Craig and Mike had no such issues but still couldn’t get onto the pace of the first two Carnethies.
The main race highlights were the eleven-times winner, Rob Jebb, being beaten by Paul Oldham for the overall win. The other stand-out performance was for Tim Gould (five-times winner) winning the VET 50 class in 5th overall taking the VET 50 record down to 3:10:08 (noting that it stood at 3:32 for many years!).
The ladies race was won by Jules Toon in a time of 3:57:07; second was Verity Appleyard (4:01:22) and third was past-winner, Isla Rountree (4:09:00).
Superb conditions on the hills and a really excellent race. Mike had no mechanical issues with his bike but his shoe gave him terrible stick only to find a one pound coin hiding in there! Results
