Four Carnethies made the trip to the Lakes for this year’s Tour de Helvellyn, traditionally held on the Saturday before Christmas (unless, it seems, that Saturday falls on Christmas Eve).
After kipping on the floor of Askham community centre on Friday night, amid snores, squeaks, hisses and whistles, we were awoken to tea and porridge shortly before 6am. A light frost overnight made for clear skies and fun running, with firm underfoot conditions for the time of year.
A 2 hour start-window, from 7-9am avoids a mass start and allows people plenty time to make the cut-offs.
The 38 mile route goes from Askham, south to Patterdale and around Ullswater to Sticks Pass, south along the east side of Thirlmere before crossing Grisedale back to Patterdale and retracing(ish) the route home.
Mighty soup, tea and puddings at the finish made it even more worthwhile.
Last year’s winner, Jim Mann, was first home in a new record time of 5h 42 mins, helped by conditions (obviously in addition to some fitness, speed and effort).

Fun day’s out had by all, with all four Carnethies in the top 40. Another great way to avoid Christmas shopping…
