Whilst the LAMM and Trotternish races were enjoying fantastic blue skies and sun, the second British Championship counter was not to be so lucky! Everyone had their compasses primed after the fiasco in mist in the first counter in NI in March. However, the high lightening risk forecast meant the race was altered to a low level option, and we found ourselves 30 minutes before the race frantically re-marking maps, or in Andy and my case, just trying to find a map with the whole of the course on! The final course was a 21.5 mile route running along the Buttermere valley and then into Ennerdale valley with a quick detour up to Moses trod below Great Gable and Kirk Fell. This gave lots of fast flat trail running, with a final 7.5 mile stretch of flat fast running down Ennerdale valley towards the finish. Positions changed in the mens and ladies as the race progressed. Top 5 men – Rob Hope 1st, Karl Gray 2nd, Oli Johnson 3rd, Kim Collinson 4th, Andy Fallas 5th. Top 5 ladies – Jackie Lee 1st, Vic Wilkinson 2nd, Shona Robertson 3rd, Helen Bonsor 4th, Jasmin Paris 5th. Results here. Many thanks to the organiser and marshalls on the day, who had a very difficult job running a British and English Championship race with the conditions forecast. Well done to all Carnethies there – Stewart Whitlie (2nd MV50), Mike Reid, Mark Johnson, Andrew Normand, Jasmin Paris, Konrad Rawlik, Simon Titmuss, Adrian Davis.
