All available evidence suggested that Sunday 8th June was the second Sunday of the month and therefore the appointed date for the Carnethy slow cycle ride.
So it was that a leaderless group of two sallied forth at 09:15hrs prompt from KB in fine sunny conditions. Fairmilehead, Auchendinny, the old railway to Penicuik, the Moss, Lamancha, Shiplaw, Temple, Carrington, Roslin Glen, and back by Fairmilehead was the chosen route.
Without the wise council of our usual leaders to explain the error of our ways we can confirm that the hills were indeed steep, the headwind at least force 7 on the Beaufort scale and there were no descents worth recording. In fact it was uphill and headwind all the way.
Despite the degree of difficulties encountered en route, KB was eventually reached once again after a circuit of a few inches less than 48 miles at an average 14mph. Yet to be scientifically proved it is suspected that excessive blethering during the ride reduced potential average speed by 1 mph.
Perhaps our leaders will reappear in time for the July outing.
