There are various ways to experience the Pentlands and most route combinations have been done. Skylines, Lowlines, Halfpipes, Extended Rounds have been recorded. I thought I had spotted a gap, building on the 7 Reservoirs race route, and extending the fabulous 7 Res Swim Run route that swims across the reservoirs with about 1400m of swimming. How about swimming the length of the 7 Reservoirs? Has anyone done that before? If so, let me know so I can compare notes.
My idea was the shortest running distance (dodgy knee still) and the furthest ‘logical’ swim to make a neat circuit starting and finishing at Bonaly. For most of the swimming you can stay close to the banks with the exception of Threipmuir which leaves you a long way from the shore. After the heavy rain the reservoirs are very full this year making this swim the most committing, even though on this route it is one of the shorter swims.
So, for those who can swim and run and want a new challenge I present the Pentland Waterline.
Can you do it under 4hrs? Can you extend it? Add a hill between each swim?
