Before I announce the winner I think it only right that I share the feedback from the judges on their perspective on the entrants this year. So here you are.
1) We really liked the symbolism in Jim’s arrangement expressing through intertwined shoes the recent addition to his family life.
2) Graham’s choice of medium was a bold choice but he managed to capture that moment before it disappears whilst at the same time drawing underlying parallels to environmental changes and receding alpine glaciers.
(Ed: Be assured no jelly babies were hurt in the making of this montage)
3) As a previous winner, as usual another strong entry from Jeff & clearly looking to appeal to the judges sentiments. A fine example of what can be achieved with modern technology.
4) Lee is to be commended for taking on a particularly difficult subject in “Still Life”. For us he’s done a great job capturing something we might often take for granted but conveying it in way the onlooker can very much relate to.
5) Great to see another different medium used by Digby this time in his seashell sculpture. Although judges weren’t sure if the photo bombing by the invisible man was deliberate or not.
6) The fun these three girls had staging the shot really comes across with that twinkle in their eyes and the clever double entendre leaves the viewer wanting more.
7) A very abstract and an inventive use of physical & visual wordplay.
8) It was nice to see a sport outside of running being represented in the competition, maybe the action could have been a bit closer up.
9) Ken’s carries on a Carnethy tradition utilising family members as muses
(Ed: well we believe they’re his children)
In summary The Carnethies have clearly surpassed themselves again and it seems their creativity knows no end. BUT as always with such high class entries it’s always a difficult and subjective job awarding the winner.
All the entries will receive a bottle of local home brew, with the winner taking away not only the 2018 bragging rights but an appropriate main prize
Which just leaves me to announce this years competition winner (drum roll)…………….. Oh, the suspense.
Nikki, Nicki and Nikki in the Buff at the Ryvoan Pass
Judges “we just felt it had a bit of everything and most of all people getting out there enjoying themselves, well done Nikki(s). Are they Bob Johnston’s proteges?”
Prizes will be available at the Carnethy Xmas doo.
Just like to thank everyone who helped make it happen. Keep an eye out for the next one coming your way.
