This evening’s CarnethyCap competitors had a great time on the route. The girls totally beasted the boys – see results. A little mist on the tops and a few spots of rain as we set off didn’t deter us. Nicki, Nikki and Hilary had a great run and achieved many Strava trophies and Queens of the Mountains. The boys did well too. Thanks Digby for a great route especially the Maass Death Descent where Nikki Dunn is now Queen of the Mountains. The winner this evening, however, was Hilary who held us all off on the climbs and the flats, only letting us catch up a little on the descents. Great to be racing against others again.

Arthur’s Seat Handicap June Results
Apologies for the tardy results, I celebrated my 40th last week and duly got shingles, just to make me feel really old.
I don’t think anyone made it for the Monday meet, which suggests the current format suits people. I’ll lead by example next month.
Excellent runs by both Andy (his first sub-30 effort) and Viv on a very warm week.
Thanks as ever for sending in your times.

Hardmoors White Horse Trail Half Marathon
The White Horse (that thing on the hillside in the distance a bit before you get into York on the train) is part of a seven trail race (marathon/half/10k) series put on by Hardmoors around the North Yorkshire moors. We did the Half (17 miles and 550m ascent) which is a lovely route, going from Sutton Bank/White Horse, out along the Cleveland Way and looping back by Rievaulx Abbey. For social distancing, the race went off in waves at 2 minute intervals. First home male was James Eaton (u/a) in 1.56, first female was Samantha Davies (Easingwold) in 2.08… 2.51 for me (3rd V60) and 3.17 for Sandra (6th V50). Good to be back racing with the competition and comradeship that it brings.

Belated Burns Scott Award
Last Tuesday the official presentation of the Burns Scott Award took place. John Busby passed on the painting to Ken Fordyce. In case you have forgotten, the Burns Scott trophy was awarded to Ken for his work organising the 2020 Pandemicap series and for generally being a great club member. Congratulations again Ken!

Arthur’s Seat – Eóin special: Social Report
I’ve taken a good look through the comments from the 2nd pandemicap. You are clearly a kind-hearted club, not wanting to write too much about the moments of loathing. A lot of people used the word ‘fun’ although more in relation to the route than actually running it. Many of you mentioned again being surprised to find new paths you hadn’t run before. I particularly liked the highly random curving path down to Duddingston. Some ran in the haar so did very well just to get around. Others enjoyed racing again (if you want to race for the next one, sign up here).
But it was good to see a few people speak honestly: ‘Definitely prefer the Edinburgh Park Run’. Others with a good dose of irony may be giving away their true thoughts: “Really enjoyed the section from the bush to the sleeper steps.” “I thought the part through the car park was a bit easy”.
We can certainly say it was an excellent, demanding, lung-busting, rollercoaster course – thank you to Eóin.
Since time immemorial, there have been Handicap excuses (“I did reps yesterday”, “just had my dinner”, “the handicapper has it in for me”, etc.). We now have the new “I had my jab yesterday” excuse to add to the list, and even pre-run acupuncture – not sure if these two refer to the same thing. Others seem to be claiming they should have had a better handicap due to short legs in relation to the sleeper steps.
And then there’s Hyman’s Knoll and the descent to the car park, which clearly had its challenges. Andy Spenceley came across a wedding party on its top, and Hilary Spenceley kindly sent in some background information which confirmed another source saying that it is name in honour of Martin Hyman, who passed away recently. Hilary writes:
“I’d hazard a guess that Hyman’s knoll is named after Martin Hyman who died recently. He planned the courses for the World Mt Running Trophy in 1995 [information here] and the knoll was visited by at least some of the courses. In recent years Martin has been best known for the Tues Intervals session on the Meadows which he organised for over 40 years, for young- junior races eg at Tinto and Chapelgill, and he was on the HRC. Going back 30 years he organised Thursday evening interclub training form Meggetland, and several great interclub challenges eg 2 Breweries Relay from Broughton to Cockermouth and I think a Speyside Way relay.”
Also, a welcome to Kit Craig, this was his first Carnethy Race. Quite the race to start with!
Finally, the photo competition on the theme of Going Wrong. Entries rose by 300% from the first one, so that was three. Two of them deserve points/prizes: Nikki Dunn and Kathy Henly and their dog putting a lot more effort into their photos than their run, and Stephen Croft demonstrating the challenges of recce-ing this route. And finally no points for the third entry from El Presidente whose ‘Going Wrong’ appears to be submitting the photo to the wrong competition. (Mark, how about this Tulip Fest?). Of course, any captions for this photo are very welcome, and apologies if you find it a bit disturbing.
Next up is Digby’s Carnethycap, yet another fabulous route.

MTB Tour of East Lothian
Perfect summer weather, and a gang of 12 riders emerge from Longniddry railway station heading for the coast for a 70km tour of the best of East Lothian. A back entrance to the grounds of Gosford House allowed us to avoid no-cycling signs for a brief traverse of the prohibition zone, dutifully walking wherever we saw other humans, to emerge at the warden-protected entrance where the no cycling signs were.
At the Aberlady Bay footbridge we briefly merged with a gang of alternative Carnethy runners heading for the dunes, but had to rush off with a long way to go.
A hot and sandy traverse along the coast, with a fixed rope-assisted retreat from the beach, took us to a very busy North Berwick for a brief lunch stop searching for coffee and food queues. The climbing started on the steep gorsey east ridge of North Berwick Law.
We retreated 90m below the summit down the NE face through the quarries to join the John Muir Way, continuing fast and south to the curling ponds of Balgone, with a brief water stop with Janet and Jim Darby, fondly remembered by the old lags in the group. A devious traverse via Whitekirk Hill took us back to the coast at Ravensheugh sands. One member thought he saw an uncharted peak, in the manner of Sir Francis Younghusband, but it was just another confusing elevation of North Berwick Law as we gyrated vaguely south eastward. On arrival back at the coast at Ravensheugh beach, the usual bold member was immersed in the sunny foaming waves to celebrate the arrival of summer.
A traverse around St Baldred’s headland took us to our turn westward for the return leg. “Are we nearly there yet” became the cry as we passed the halfway point. Tyninghame Wood led to Binning Wood and a riot of rhododendrons. Old Newbyth House led back to the John Muir Way for an ascent of Drylaw Hill, then Markle fish ponds, Pencraig Hill and the long ridge-ascent to the Garleton Hills.
After struggling over locked gates and double barbed wire fences, someone wearily asked whether this circuit had ever been done in a day. The reply that “the purpose of the day was to see if it were possible” produced a weary sigh. The “no more significant ascents” announcement was greeted with scepticism, but proved to be true, with a relaxing glide seaward again via the old Haddington railway branch line to arrive at platform 2, the only wheels to arrive that day at a station locked down for the day by a rail strike, defeating the carbon-reducing purpose of meeting here in the first place. No mechanicals, no punctures, three declared falls. Not bad.
Around 70km and 700m of ascent. About 8hrs including stops.

Pandemicap 2 – Arthur’s Seat Eóin Special Results & Report
Distance: 7km | Ascent: 550m | Duration: 19 days | Feature: giant steps | Runners: 59
Eóin Lennon – course was “Tough, short and sharp.”
Proper lung buster route. Good fun.” says John. “Eóin has broken me!” says Ali. Andrew Spenceley – “Had to gate crash a wedding on top of Haggis Knowe”. Weddings weren’t the only problem, navigation on and off Whinny proved too much for some, including Eóin. Hyman’s Knoll is now a well-known Edinburgh land mark, not just another obscure mound on Whinny Hill.
As expected, handicap times were tougher this time, only 8 managed to beat their prediction. A further 10 were less than a 1 minute off, but couldn’t pull off anything special.
Despite some corner cutting into carpark, no penalties given. Any gains will be disadvantage for next handicap times.
Handicap – Top 3 places:
Congratulations to Alex Coakleythe handicap winner. Alex – “This is the greatest day of my life”. Training plan is definitely showing good results on the uphills.

Red Moss Kips Hill Race 2021
In glorious weather, Carnethy turned out for a great night back racing. A new track seemed to speed times up, or was it pent up demand that broke the course records. Most people cycled there which made it even better.
For the Men:
Andrew Douglas (InverClyde – West District) set a new mens record of 38:48 , taking 2 mins off the previous record
Eóin Lennon (Carnethy HRC) was 2nd ( and East District winner) equalling Euan Brown’s previous record of 40:46 set in 2019
Carnethy Hill racing Club won the Men’s team prize with close packing at the front, with top 3 counters finishing 2,3 and 5th.
For the Women:
Megan Crawford (Fife AC) set a new women’s record of 47:39 to win the East District Champs
Kirsty Dickson (Carnethy HRC) was 2nd and also beat the previous record from 2016
