Congratulations to long time (and honorary life!) member Angela Mudge who has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Stirling University for her many achievements at Hill & Mountain Running over many years – including, of course, becoming World Champion. She was given the award at the graduation ceremony in Stirling on Friday. Good to see the sport recognised in academia.

After a dreich 10am start at Haymarket Station, the weather improved and made for a nice autumn bike ride to South Queensferry via mainly the John Muir Way, following cycle paths to Barnton and through the Dalmeny Estate.
A confirmed line-up of Martha, Keith, Andy, Nicki, Shane, Richard and Sandra was joined on the day by very welcome last-minuters Ann, Willie, Esther and Max.
A minor crisis ensued shortly after departure when Keith realised he’d left his rucksack behind – not as he first thought, at Haymarket Station, but in the car at Straighton. Oops! The old I’ve-forgotten-my-wallet ploy again, though with an interesting variation of actually, I’ve forgotten everything.
“You nip back and get it and we’ll wait for you at Ratho”, we all said dryly. (No, we didn’t.)
Shane joined us at Barnton Avenue and the 12 of us pootled on up past the Cramond Brig to the Burnshot Gate of the Dalmeny Estate.
Miraculously, a car came along just at the right time to open said automatic gate for us – a coincidence rarer than hens’ teeth or even Keith remembering his wallet – saving us the ordeal of having to go through the kissing gate one at a time taking forever and ever and fussing over whether or not – and who – to kiss.
After Dalmeny House and Barnbougle Castle, we opted to leave the shore path for a wee slog up the braes through the Leuchold Wood to see the giant topiary heads at the vermouth distillery, the eyes of which glow red at you as you pass. Spooky!
Then we partly backtracked so we could rejoin the shore path and soon we were at the Railbridge Bistro in Queensferry where – miracle number two – we managed to get seats inside and were able to warm up a bit over a cuppa.
Here, Shane tried to pull the old I’ve-forgotten-my-wallet ploy too, so we left him behind washing dishes and ambled along the cobbled high street for a quick review of Queensferry’s very interesting – if you like that sort of thing – local history information boards before re-joining the cycle path at the Scotmid.
The path after Dalmeny was muddy but not too muddy and except for Sandra’s chain coming off, we were soon at Kirkliston, and shortly after that – and thankfully not for long – the airport dual carriageway and the footbridge over it to Ratho Station.
Then a slight detour through the wood and quarry by Norton House Hotel, so that Keith could amuse himself pushing his bike up the slippy grass slope and skiting about on the muddy tracks through the trees, which he so loves to do.
Here, those of us who remembered that Shane actually got hitched at Norton House in 2016, momentarily paused to wonder how he was getting on with the dishes back in Queensferry and whether his bike had been stolen after we left. It’s a dog-eat-dog world alright.
After that, a quick romp down the main road over the motorway and up to the Bridge Inn for assorted hot and cold beverages and delicious French onion soup in pleasant sunshine.
And to end the day, a leisurely, scenic ride back along the canal to town by about 3pm – unless of course you were cycling back to Straighton or Rosslyn or Penicuik. Some people just can’t get enough exercise it seems.
And there we are till next time. Keith says he’s planning a circo-Edinburgh trip for us all soon, which I’m already looking forward to. Now, where did I put my wallet?
Yes, I know you can use your phone but some of us like to try and blag things the old-fashioned way.

Smallish crew this month, but considering the weather we’ve had this month it was pretty good conditions on the Monday. Not too windy or wet, maybe a bit greasy underfoot which affected the times. Good to have Peter back off paternity, even if he did sail past me before I’d even reached the gutted haddie.
Well done to Peter & Elspeth on beating their handicaps, and an extra well done to Elspeth for a good win completed in the dark!

On Saturday 23rd October 2022 I took part in the Minichamizo race in Villanueva del Rosario, in Spain north of Malaga. The race is 12.5km long with 600m of ascent and descent.
At 8.55am around 80 of us gathered on the start line getting ready to run. There was also another race of 23km starting at the same time. We then got the countdown cinco, cuatro, tres, dos, uno… and we were off. We started by running through the village streets which were hardly wide enough to fit a car down. As we left the village we were dawned with the first uphill, many people started to walk but I kept running, weaving between people who were walking. We then came to our first meeting of the helpers who were directing us to go up the hill to the right and they were cheering us on. The up continued and the path began to get narrower making it harder to overtake, I began to walk – but speed walk or as fast as my little legs would go. The up just kept on going and we were soon heading up a hillside with a gently sloping drop, and people would say ‘passe’ if they would like to get past. Eventually I got to the top of the hill after many false summits. The descent was just as steep as the ascent and I struggled to run fast down it as it was stoney and dusty underfoot. After 7km there was an aid station offering water, I didn’t understand what they were saying at first as they were speaking in Spanish. The descent then became more gradual so I was able to run more. The village then came into view and it looked as though we were heading towards it, which was great, until you came round the corner and the path began to head up again, my legs were a little sore after the steep up and down so my jog was slowish. I then recognised where we were and before I knew it I was coming down the last hill and then there I was running through the village, round the corner and there were the final hundred meters, I could see the finish. I crossed the line after 1hr 50mins 12secs! I got a medal put round my neck and a man began to speak to me in Spanish and I just looked at him and said ‘English?’ He began to interview me as I was 1st in my category. I then went over to get my name crossed off to say that I had finished and I got a free hoodie.
The prize ceremony happens at 12 o’clock as that was the cut off time and I got a trophy and a bottle of olive oil!!! I also found out later in the day that I was 3rd female overall. I was very happy with myself.
The X11 Chamizo trail race series had multiple running races on the same day: 12.5km, 23km, 42m, 60km and 100km. It wasn’t as popular as the UTMB races but there were still a fair amount of people in each race and a high percentage of people finished. My route was well marked with tape so I knew the way although at points where there was a junction it was hard to spot the tape as sometimes it was hiding behind a branch but other than that they were very supported and it was very well organised.
My mum, Nicola and my auntie, Michaela also took part in the same race. Meanwhile my dad was busy running the 100km version and he ended up coming 1st vet 50. What a great end to a superb holiday in Spain.

Tinto Hill Race took place on Saturday, in what turned out to be much better weather than last year. After a turbulent week of logistics problems, it ended up running pretty smoothly on the day, with lots of fantastic volunteers from Carnethy and Tinto Hill Runners. A big thank you goes out to Malcolm Lord and Duncan Davis who picked up and drove a minibus to shuttle runners, along with all those who also offered their services to do so. Without the option of a shuttle, the race looked doomed early last week, and may have had to be cancelled before the roads department eventually relented and told us that people could go from registration to the start on foot.
The new registration and car parking area was an improvement on the previous location, and the Damn Delicious shop seemed popular with runners after the race. There was a short walk to the start, less boggy than the previous route.
157 runners set off, one less than last year despite the improved weather conditions on offer. The skies cleared and the wind dropped as they set off, and those of us left at the start line enjoyed a moment of peaceful contemplation, along with some snacks, before getting into action and turning the start line into a finish line.
Soon after the seniors set off, Jonny Muir sounded the starting horn for the Tinto Tiptoe. A new route for this year made it more of a hill race, finishing on a downhill muddy section to bring them to the finish line. They all crossed the finish line with smiles on their faces and mud everywhere, with times ranging from 11:11 to 22:19. Arielle Muir and Effy Coakley were the only junior athletes to have taken part in last year’s race, and seemed significantly happier this year than they were in last year’s storm. When they’re older they’ll understand more about Type II fun.
As the final junior runner approached the finish, we started to see some bigger people working their way down the hill.
An excellent run saw Finn Lydon win, and come very close to the course record. Heidi Ross led home a dominant field of Carnethy women, with 6 in the top 7, including 1st FV40 Nicola Duncan in 5th (and first to the top, I think she mentioned this once or twice!).
Andy Macrae came flying down the hill in 10th place, to win the V40s, despite being in his 50s, and looking like he’s in his 30s. It made my prize giving (and general inability to read properly) even more confusing, and deprived Andy Lamont of a 3rd V40 jar of honey, so we’ll be hoping you just marshal at next year’s race Andy!
Thanks once again to all the marshals, Tinto Hill Runners, and Michael at Damn Delicious. Hopefully Michael will have us back, and I look forward to seeing many of you there again next year.

Finn Lydon had a tremendous run, in what was fairly good conditions at Tinto (the rain stopped, and the sun came out just as the race started). In second place at the summit behind Rory Abernethy (Ochils), Finn flew down to take the win in the very fast time of 30:18, which is the 4th fastest run ever – all time list here – (very impressive when you consider it was the 38th edition of the race and it is 26 years since anyone has run faster!) He also just missed Adam Ward’s Carnethy record of 30:13 in becoming the 2nd fastest ever Carnethy runner (list here). Rory’s time was also impressive as in the top 20 all time.
It was a Carnethy double as Heidi Ross easily took the female prize, with the club showing a lot of strength as the top 3 women were all Carnethy. The Female all time list is here. For more stats, the list of all winners is on the Tinto page, or here.

Tinto Tiptoe 2022
A field of 14 runners, aged from 13 to 4, took part in the ‘new’ Tinto Tiptoe, with racers starting from the gate some 500 metres above the main start. The children followed the same route up the hill as the seniors, onto the shoulder of Tinto, before being turned around, ready for a wet, muddy, slippery charge to the finish line. Sophie McBurnie led the way, with girls outnumbering boys by nine to five. The Tinto Tiptoe maintains the traditional approach adopted by the former race director and the late Martin Hyman: children should be given a pressure-free opportunity to enjoy the thrill of racing in the Scottish hills.
