Early failure in 2016 calender use, and not realising the National XC was a week later this year than normal, meant we had double booked ourselves with races this weekend. National XC or a 21k trail race in Glentress…? New ventures proved to be too tempting and we went for the new Glentress Trail races organised by High Terrain Events. This was a great low key event with a choice of 10km, 21km or 42km, on single track trails. Andy and I both did the 21km which gave a good continuous loop with 750m climb. We managed a double win with Andy winning in 1:29 and myself in 1:43. Other carnethies spotted were Kate Darlow who also ran the 21km and Tim and the kids provided great support to everyone. Provisional results can be found here: www.highterrainevents.co.uk/#!glentress-trail-race/cho2
Many thanks to the organisers and the marshals.

UAE race report
Wednesday training – Edinburgh
7 out in the 7.30 group for a run in a lovely crisp clear evening with a full moon rising. My ‘carefully researched’ route nearly became derailed as the Braid’s golf club had been mysteriously moved in the night, but this gave us an opportunity to admire the architecture and peer into living rooms in various culs de sac. Heading back to KB Patricia, with the same Petzl Tikka RXP head torch as me, articulated something that’s been bothering me – “do you get a weird 3D thing going on when you look at the grass?” – which I do. Hard to describe, it feels like one eye is muffled and the grass looks, well, weird. Glad it’s not just me. The 7pm group apparently has three Lindsays. Our one didn’t turn up! 5.14 miles in 71 mins. Wednesday training – Majorca
Well, there I was in the bar drinking a beer waiting for my pals to turn up. At 7pm there was only me, so I had an other cervesa, and waiterd until half past. So Willie Nae Pals headed off on his own for 2.5 miles north from Colonia Sant Jordi along the coastal path and then back to enjoy a lovely bottle of red wine. I really miss KB! Willie Gibson |
Jasmin & Konrad complete Winter Bob Graham Round
While the rest of us were “enjoying” the snow and zero visibility of the Carnethy 5 Race, the Club Captains, Konrad Rawlik and Jasmin Paris decided to take the day off and attempt a winter Bob Graham Round. With only minimal support and despite the hills being plastered with snow, they recorded an excellent time of 22hrs 28mins. Jasmin’s full account of the round is here, or in the Spring edition of the Carnethy Journal.
Easy Social Run Misses Out The Pub!
The rain went off as the Easy Social run set off. Eleven of us including 4 New Runners (Corina, Clarissa, Sarah and Tracy) headed south across Craigmillar Park and the thorny bridge (sorry David not a night for shorts) then up to Braids. Across the Braids Tenth and then a direct line to the south east corner of Braids. Then up by Meadowhead Farm and a quick look at The Stable Bar, (I was dragged away pintless) and then past Buckstone Primary. Then with a quick turn in to Mortonhall Golf Course we took a direct route to the Masts and on to the Trig. Then a direct route back made up 4.8 miles in 68 minutes. A personal Best for me (new routes are my only chance now)! Back at KB we arrived just as the Social run arrived from their Arthur’s Seat via Craigmillar run, good timing for a shared pint. 12.7 miles, 2,993ft ascent, 2hr 7min Three in the fast group tonight, and we headed towards the Pentlands via Braidburn Park following the burn to Redford Woods and then under the bypass at Dreghorn. Initially gloopy mud, and then increasingly deep fresh snow the higher we went. We skirted Capelaw to the coll and ran the Allermuir/Caerketton ridge down to The Steading, back to KB via Mortonhall/Liberton Tower. KB bar was shut, so no beer 🙁 Graham Nash |
Scottish Islands Peaks Race 2016
Once again the Scottish Islands Peaks Race is looking for volunteers to help with marshalling the race over all or part of the long weekend of Friday 20th May to Monday 23rd 2016.
Marshals are required for Oban, Mull, Jura and Arran and their duties include putting out and taking in checkpoints markers, timing runners in and out and checking runners’ mandatory kit. Marshalling is done on a rota basis allowing marshals plenty of time to go off and do their own thing on some of Scotland’s beautiful islands. Some marshals choose to do both Mull on Friday and Arran on Saturday and Sunday.
Transport to and from the islands will be coordinated by the Island Leaders and reasonable out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed. Marshals camp on Mull but on Jura have the use of the community hall and on Arran have the use of both the Yacht Club and the RNLI Station.
Carnethy Hill Running Club also receive a donation from the race in recognition of marshals’ services.
Anyone interested marshalling just contact us by email on macdonald_tigharry@yahoo.co.uk. More details about the race itself can be found on our web or Facebook Page.

Carnethy Ladies in Town
Five Carnethy Ladies ran from Patricia’s house on Monday evening. We ran across Bruntsfield Links and the Meadows to Arthur’s Seat. There was still a lot of ice about, so we trotted down to Hunter’s Bog, then up the hill to Salisbury and across the Meadows. Back home we enjoyed wonderful vegetable broth, Irish stew and banana cake with lashings of tea. Many thanks to Patricia for a great run and delicious food!
