28 Carnethies (and Amber) assembled in Aberlady outside the Grace of India on Wednesday night just as Jasmin crossed the finish line of the Spine Race in Kirk Yetholm. We were all with her in spirit as we headed off into the dark, not wanting to linger any longer in case we were arrested for loitering.
Rather than heading straight for Aberlady nature reserve we took shelter in the trees of Luffness Estate following a single track path littered with tree roots which saw Wiilie come a cropper and almost cause a pile up behind him. A short stop at Bickerton’s tomb and then we were out of the estate and onto the John Muir Way to Gullane. An obligatory crossing of a golf course, through the village and we were in the sand dunes, the sea before us. As we turned to head west the wind chill hit us but no-one dared complain, the conditions Jasmin had endured still uppermost in our thoughts!
To avoid swimming we scrambled first up a sand dune and then some rocks to reach Gullane No 1. A quick reassemble and trot round the headland and we were met by Tracey and Heather coming towards us who had been running late and missed us in Aberlady. We were now 30!
As the fasties took off along the beach they were almost at the submarines before they realised they had missed the turn off and the track back through the nature reserve. Gordon did a quick head count as we crossed the Bridge to Enchantment to check we hadn’t lost anyone then it was straight back to the Indian for a well earned curry.
