Finally achieved the last place so cruelly snatched from me at the Slioch race by Jean Bowman, who got lost, so really I still claim that a moral anti-victory.
Not quite so testing, this race ascends Venchen Hill, eccentrically returns to the start (where the junior race finishes), then continues in the other direction via a river crossing to go up Staerough Hill, looping the top and returning to the show field. Fully marked and marshalled, you can’t get lost!
The weather was kind, the views lovely, and the show an eclectic mix of manicured sheep, vintage cars and tractors (somewhat battered, having mostly been found in barns), craft competitions of baking, produce etc, tugs of war, pipe band, dog shows, gundog retrieval skills and sheepdog trials. Entry to the show gives you entry to the race, and also to the competitions. So even if you do badly running, you could get a prize for most enormous carrot, or best humorous photo, with caption. I should have come with a wider arsenal.
Rather a small field of runners which is a shame as it’s definitely worth a trip. Results… well I think I’ll just gloss over those.
