The short run – A sparkly night with a large moon. Lots of people heading up Blackford hill to view the firework bursts all over Edinburgh, and maybe to set off their own. We took the steep northerly descent testing the grip (which failed for someone) and after a dead end in the gorse found the track and headed off to the Hermitage. As we headed up the Lang Linn path to the Hermitage golf course Richard, and his daughter Constance – running for the first time with Carnethy – decided we were going to come back down the Howe Dean Path and headed off there. But we fooled them good, we crossed the road to The Ride path and down around Liberton Tower (we did wait for them really!), and took the sneaky limbo entrance back into Craigmillar Park golf course and KB. The fast run – 12.4miles, 1hr 50min, 3,199ft ascent/descent With an almost full moon, (98.46% illumination), three of us headed to the Pentlands to view the fireworks over Edinburgh from up high. Our run over Blackford, through the Hermitage, Braidburn and Colinton Mains Parks passed numerous fireworks displays, some rockets too close for comfort. We even saw a johhny nae mates having a fireworks display all by himself. From Dreghorn barracks we headed up towards White Hill and then skirted the top of Capelaw before pausing on Allermuir to admire the fireworks across the city far below. The descent off Allermuir was slippy over freezing ground, we returned to KB via Hillend, Mortonhall and Liberton Tower, just in time to enjoy a 3/4 pint of Stewarts 80/ with good head. Graham Nash |
