This year’s Alternative Carnethy 5 was completed in different ways from previously. In order to comply to Covid rules the races were split over two weeks rather than one and allowing everyone to do the routes at any time they wanted. It comprised 6 races this year with the Mini Mountain Marathon (an orienteering course) completed during the middle weekend.
In summary, success in racing requires following the route as mapped and described and not getting lost or departing from the best line too far! OK, the odd hole in the wall was blocked off but sometimes you have to be canny. Despite not racing together, at the top, two Carnethies finished separately within 1 and 14 seconds of each other in two races. Mountain Marathon experience showed how map interpretation and route choice are nearly as important as careful map folding so that you don’t miss CPs. Here are a summary and comments on each of the runs from those who entered into the google timing sheets.
Race | No. ran | Fastest time | Selected Comments |
Tour de Glencorse | 12 | 44:13 | * great route mixing the rough with the smooth
* 2nd go doing 25mins quicker * Struggled on first few attempts to find right path off Bells Hill * made a real mess of descent * Loved the trod up above the south side of Glencorse, once I found it! Wasn’t so sure about the ‘cross the Glencorse burn’ instruction! |
Allermuir up | 14 | 20:52 | * Very little of that race is enjoyable.
* views stunning but why are hills so steep * Hard work. ! * That climb never gets easier. Needed a proper breather at top. * ooft |
Caerketton down | 14 | 6:28 | * if you listen to music, choose the right song to throw yourself down the hill
* Descending isn’t my thing!! * yahooo, oh I love descending * Gentle rib tickler |
Schierloh’s G String | 11 | 40:20 | * Lovely route….cracking ridge and great route idea.
* Enjoyed it, loved the run off. * Legs a bit dead after lots of hill days * one of those routes to play around with …loved the big final descent |
El Preso’s Parkrun | 15 | 23:23 | * After running this, went to doctors, then hospital for chest xray and put on antibiotics and pain killers. Jessie.
* Green balcony was a new path for me – nice route! * Successfully dodged all the college kids. * Started out at wrong metal gate…encountered blocked gate. Tried getting round through new houses and then ended up going north to railway. |
Mini Mountain Marathon | 13 | 1:15:47 (full points) | * My first go at mountain marathon-ing. Lots of fun, but no-one mentioned the coos!
* OMM cancellation therapy. Good fun with nice paths and difficult choices * Didn’t see control (N) on way out due to folded map – stupid mistake * I’ll take a participation ribbon for that. … Can’t believe I ran right past T. Oh well. * Bad error on Capelaw |
The ideas of this set of races is to race every night of the week. This is not easy from a fitness point of view as most of us don’t get to run every day and certainly not race every day. Recovery from the day before is often only trumped by the selfishness on family life and the ends some had to go to in sneaking away from their partners and kids. Well done all those who did the routes and thanks to their families and partners for letting them out to play. For me, I treated them as part of my post cow physio successfully posting plenty of slow times.
If you haven’t done the routes they are all great fun and are still on the website with maps and descriptions (not that these were often followed!!) and offer some new ways of ticking the hills.
