Last Sunday two Carnethys participated in the Aberfeldy Middle Distance Triathlon which this year formed part of the Scottish Tri Championships. Mark Hartree and Noel Tomnay joined the Super Veterans among around 385 participants and relay teams.
This race involved a 1.9km triangular swim route in Loch Tay followed by a 90km cycle past Schiehallion and around Loch Rannoch with a few hills back to the start, and finishing with a 21km run in an ‘h’ shaped out and back route in the grounds of Taymouth Castle. This route is repeated 3 times and has small climbs on each leg of the ‘h’ and a chance to grimace at folk coming the opposite direction and try and figure if you are gaining or losing ground on them. The starting weather for the cycle was a bit wet but it dried up by midday to a warm damp run.
Noel came first Carnethy and I took silver. OK, in real money, Noel came 119th and I scrapped in as 193rd with a prize of cramp at the finish line to amuse the onlookers. Someone won, we didn’t.
A good event although my transition times (and swim) could have been a lot better, not helped by some daft system of having to reduce your race number by 300 in order to find your transition kit. Confused me anyway, clearly not Noel! Maybe he listened to the briefing….
