If you haven’t discovered this series yet, and want to keep your speed-work going with short trail races, then these races are for you. They are 5/6kms (this one was 3.7 miles) and the terrain is mixed, in and around East Lothian.
This installment saw 50 runners set off from Longniddry Railway Station and out and back on a trail with a loop into the fields for added intrigue. The weather was sultry and the spot was a quiet one. Too quiet, it seemed, as a rider on a horse made her way onto the trail despite warnings and, sure enough, the horse was spooked by the returning runners charging at pace. She dismounted and the horse ran amok, disrupting the race somewhat. Some runners were more unlucky than others (I lost 2 places which I never regained) and the horse ran off (and may still be running for all I know).
It was a 1-2-3 for Portobello with a winning time of 19.34 from David Limmer. Carnethies Mike Lynch (9th in 22.25 and Fred Young (26th in 28.01) also ran. Peter Buchanan was 3rd in 21.43.
