The North Berwick beach handicap was more a beach and jungle bashing event due to heavy undergrowth since the April feasibility study. As an exercise in intuitive route choice on sand, boulders, seaweed, golfer avoidance and street orienteering, it was a gem. At least two runners ran within a couple of metres of the giant turn flag and seemed to be heading for Dunbar before screams and shouts prompted a look back. Finishers coming off NB Law were greeted by a pipe band and an option to have a break at the children’s playground. A stunning summer evening ended at the chippy, ice cream parlour and pub.

It was a great night at the East Lothian seaside with perfect running weather. Some liked the route, like Nadine who came first. Some didn’t due to being quite flat apart from NBL with the odd blade of grass, nettle and thistle which grew since the April recee. Sasha ran from Edinburgh arriving just too late to start, but beat folk climbing NBL to take photos. Nicki Innes thought it the worst handicap she had ever done, but was 3rd last so maybe a bit bias. Some folk upset the golfers but hey ho.
Fish and Chips with beers and ice cream seemed to go well, as did the sun set which set fantastically over Fife and the Lomonds for those late to leave.
