Having dipped my toe in the water so to speak the last 6 months with a couple of longer runs, I thought it time to jump in the deep end and see if I could swim. Casting my eye about for something that fitted my window of opportunity I entered this last weekend and went for the unsupported category as my better half was staying home to look after the lambing. Being unsupported always makes it a bit tricky trying to cover all eventualities without carrying the kitchen sink.
It’s fair to say its been a few years since I’ve done anything big so getting my head back into the game and getting to the end were my objectives. Having walked the Cleveland Way the opposite direction a couple of years back and spent a bit of time in this area I knew what to expect. There were times though when it got a bit same same but fortunately just as it did the terrain and direction changed to keep interest and the senses stimulated.
The weather on Saturday was way better than forecast and though I can take a bit of sun I wished I’d brought a cap. In the end I didn’t get scunnered but it was a task to keep the fluids up and I was sweating like a mouse in a cat box. Fortunately it cooled a bit by evening, but it still took a while to fully rehydrate and be able to eat properly again. By half way my feet had started to develop blisters, you know they’re there but don’t want to temp fate by poking about. Apart from changing socks and applying more Vaseline I left them be and accepted it was going to be like walking on gravel for the rest of the way.
First light had me fighting the sleep demons and weaving almost drunkenly at times as I fought off the tiredness. It wasn’t until the rains came that they had a revitalising effect that I came round and woke up properly. The last leg from Osmotherley to the finish I ended up hanging out with some lads, everyone coping with their own discomfort but it helped pass the time and by the last few miles the sun had returned to welcome us in. A good day out in God’s own country.

As the nettle-rash of the previous week subsided, a group of Michael’s irregulars gathered in the light rain outside KB. A curtain of grey cloud hung low over Arthur’s less than ergonomic seat, so Michael proposed a low level route to visit Drum house. It proved attractive enough for everyone there to set off as one group.
With the semi-obligatory Braefoot-Terrace- into-Liberton-Football-pitches wall dealt with, we circumnavigated Craigmillar castle, before venturing into the nether regions of the Royal Infirmary.?? Finding only jags from thorns, the group briefly pounded Sustrans finest tramac then opted for the mud once more in the direction of Drum house. After a couple more wall & nettle detours we had a quick game of “which way’s north?”. Getting it within about 90 degrees (generous), we turned right into some woods, and were soon rewarded with a view of Drum House & its gardens. Faced with a barbed-wire topped gate, Michael took the un-Carnethy like approach of opening it with the handle.
Following a tour through a freshly planted housing estate, we headed up a rise to pass the “other drum” (big and very drum-like) and stopped briefly for a pic-without-the-nic at the famed “Burial ground of an unknown high heidun”.?? Word has it this is known locally as “this is where your garden topsoil went”. Eschewing the easy radial road route home, we finally wound our way along Moredun & Liberton’s hidden footpaths to Margiotti’s and a right hand turn back to KB.?? Best pace 8.50; avg a smidgen under 11.
Thanks to Michael for another fine mid-week adventure.

McWilliams Round
So, have you always fancied doing a classic fell running round but felt like a Ramsay/Bob/Paddy might be a bit too far away/awkward to recce/too Welsh/too gnarly/too long* delete as appropriate? Well luckily for you Glen McWilliams who organises the Cheviot trail races has also devised 2 fell running routes in the Cheviot Hills. The short 32 mile offering takes in portions of St Cuthbert’s and the Pennine Way plus some “interesting” pathless sections over Cheviot and Hedgehope summits. There’s also a longer 43 mile route (12 hour time limit) or if you are feeling frisky you can combine the two (24 hour limit). There’s a Facebook page with details and if you let Glen know you are making an attempt he’ll try and see you off at the start in Wooler.
My sister and I did the short route yesterday and had a cracking day out despite taking an appalling line down off Cheviot. Not that I am biased but it’s among my favourite places to run – lots of lovely runnable trails, wide open views and best of all hardly any people. If you fancy it then it’s well worth the drive down from Edinburgh.

SIPR 2019 Sundancing in the Moonlight
The Scottish Islands Peaks Race is one of the world’s best adventure races, a combination of sailing and hill running, around and over the west coast of Scotland. This was my third time doing the race, and each one has been unique. Its hard to explain in words what a combined 56 hours of 160 nautical miles at sea plus 60 odd miles on the hills is like, so I’ve condensed it down into a few minutes of video.

Westcountry 100
It’s difficult to put my feelings into words.
This was everything I wanted it to be and so much more. Tailwind, jam wraps and fruit gums powered me through to my breakdown at mile 65. This put me behind schedule and into the night without night gear. I made it to the 70 mile aid station and with the help of two of the most incredible people I know I put one foot in front of the other to finish the exhilirating 103 mile run (3 bonus miles of nav errors) in 28 hours 57 minutes and 30 seconds.
The 100 was a combination of two 50 milers, a flat 50 (1200ft) followed by a hilly 50 (9000ft). There were 14 starters for the 100 with 9 finishers.
Shoutout to Minehead Running Club for allowing me to source support on their page and to Albion Running, check out some of their events if you’re in that part of the country. You won’t regret it.
I won’t bore anyone with the details but if you have any questions about kit, my take aways from the race, nutrition, existential crises, how to make the best jam wrap, putting fizzy laces in tea instead of sugar – I’ll happily share my experience. Because it truly was the greatest experience of my short life.
Great running from everyone else at the weekend and good luck in whatever’s coming up. I’ll be supporting/helping out for the foreseeable so don’t be shy. Take care! Website: https://www.albionrunning.org/westcountry-ultra-100

Old County Tops
This is two races in a row that our dear Secretary has wielded his executive power and forced an underlying to write the race. IMPEACH! IMPEACH!
Old County Tops is a pairs race and starts and finishes in Great Langdale and — according to the website — “visits the three high points of the old counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire, these being Helvellyn, Scafell Pike and Coniston Old Man”. These being very tall. These being very far away from each other. These basically requiring 3000ft ascents and descents each. These being very unlike Cambridgeshite [sp?] countryside.
I had teamed up with Duncan Coombs, one of the Edinburgh expats down in Cambridge for a wee run around. I spotted 2 other Carnethy teams: the aforementioned autocrat, John Ryan with Alex McVey; and, Craig and Kate.
Duncan and I cruised up the Helvellyn and casually leapfrogged our way to 2nd. Then, well, it all went downhill with the downhill. We crawled across the line in 6th in the end after a) shamefully attempting to climb Dow Crag instead of old man; b) Duncan trusting my “direct route off Scafell Pike” ; c) being overtaken by two teams in one of the only road running sections of the race. Must run more roads.
I believe John attempted to get Alex to make hush money payments mid-run, which slowed them down a bit. Between them, Craig and Kate had claimed to have only ran 7 miles this year, but I haven’t seen the results to see if that winter base was enough to multiply their yearly mileage by 11.

Goatfell
As the ferry sailed from Ardrossan we left behind miserable weather and 55 minutes later, alighting in Brodick, light drizzle was still falling and mist obscured Goatfell summit. Undeterred Carnethy mood was high as we gathered on the start line. The Goatfell Race is a 15.5km classic with a bit of everything : road, trail, rough hill track, and scrambling up steep granite boulders to reach the 870m summit. Then a tricky descent and fast run off to return to Brodick. We knew that the boulders on the descent would be slippery and dangerous. However Elliott opted for maximum risk and came hell for leather down the boulders, with Jill in rapid pursuit. Graeme was unlucky and took a hard fall. The rest of us made it unscathed to the finish, cheered on by Willie G and friends. Neil was excited that his Carnethy vest WON the race, if not a little disappointed that it was on Elliott’s back not his. Neil had lent his vest to Elliott! Yes, Elliott was first runner over the finish. Jill was 2nd female and 1st FV40, Michelle H was 2nd FV50 and I was 3rd FV50, allowing us to win the female team prize.
A fabulous day out with thanks to Shettleston Harriers for their wonderful organisation and plentiful post race refreshments and to Arran Mountain Rescue who made sure everyone was safe on the hill. Results: http://www.scottishhillracing.co.uk/RaceResults.aspx?RaceID=RA-0037&RaceYear=2019
