AS Handicap November Results
A mixed bag of weather last week with some great days and some grim days, both Peter and Jamie heading out in pretty awful conditions this past monday. The wind wasn’t too bad though and if you managed to pick a sunny day, the muddy paths made for a fun skiddy scamper.
Plenty of people beat their handicap, which is always good to see. Neil Thomas, Elspeth and Jelmer all got PBs too, in Neil’s case by three and a half minutes which makes him a very worthy winner.
A welcome to Scott T, who jogged round with me (chatting most the way) whilst I tried my best to breathe. I’m sure we’ll see some quicker times from him. Welcome back to Kai too, time injured and spent in a land without hills doesn’t seem to have affected him too badly.

Virtual Glencorse Skyline results
The Glencorse Skyline route came about based on Alan Renville’s route idea with a few extensions to include Carnethy and Allermuir summits to get it over 1000m of ascent.
Alan thought under 2 hrs would be a fast time. From each top, you can see Glencorse, or at least a wee bit of it if it is clear, and it makes for a great circuit as a half Pentland Skyline.
In many ways, it is a logical circuit which makes for good training for the longer Skyline challenge. In total it covers 15.5km and 1066m ascent.
For those who got on it on Friday and Saturday 6th – 7th Nov we were treated to quite exceptional conditions with incredible cloud inversions in the Forth Valley spewing cloud through the northern cols into the Logan Glen and over the reservoirs. It was absolutely stunning.
I could say that my time was what it was because I was looking at these views, but really I tried reasonably hard for a snail. I passed Elizabeth Leason at one point, but sadly it did not count since she was on a bike and I was in the car on the A702 to Flotterstone. For the rest of my run, everyone out seemed to overtake me which was both depressing and inspiring in equal measure. I let them all go as it is great that some Carnethys are soooo fast. Elliot Sedman had flown past me and ended with a time of 1:37 so I thought he had done it… initially. I met Pete Buchanan and Mary Hunter on her birthday enjoying the views and used his photos as they are great.
I improved my recce time by 11 mins to 2:40. Fergus Johnstone who I passed twice (he was going the opposite direction) had seen Jonny Muir ‘flying along’ and Jonny improved his time by the same amount as me to 1:36 which was surely a winning time.
Based on those registering on the Googlesheets, 27 Carnethys completed the virtual race. 10 girls and 17 boys made it a fairly equal turn out. Here are the top 3s:
Finishing position | First name | Last name | Hours | Minutes | Seconds |
5 | Elizabeth | Leason | 1 | 47 | 37 |
11 | Anne-Sophie | Ruget | 2 | 1 | 48 |
13 | Clare | Mcdonnell | 2 | 9 | 0 |
Finishing position | First name | Last name | Hours | Minutes | Seconds |
1 | James | Britton | 1 | 30 | 23 |
2 | Drew | Sharkey | 1 | 32 | 46 |
3 | Jonny | Muir | 1 | 36 | 47 |
Well done everyone. For those who missed it, give it a go. The same format is now open to do the full Pentland Sykline with details and full results for Glencorse at http://carnethy.com/carnethy-organised-races/carnethy-virtual-winter-challenges-2020/
Full results:
First name | Last name | Time | Your comments |
---|---|---|---|
James | Britton | 01:30:23 | Great route and a perfect day to be out in the hills |
Drew | Sharkey | 01:32:46 | Perfect conditions and stunning views. Great route for a race |
Jonny | Muir | 01:36:47 | Lovely! |
Eliot | Sedman | 01:37:31 | Loved the cloud inversion and stunning views from the ridgeline. Posted my route using my son's Garmin watch (Luke Sedman) |
Elizabeth | Leason | 01:47:37 | |
Alan | Konopka | 01:49:13 | Great route. My favourite views in all of Pentlands - Descent from Castlelaw. |
Andrew | Spenceley | 01:55:40 | Definitely a tough course (but no cows, horses or alpacas to slow me down, just a heron fishing, who looked at me with disdain as I ran past) |
Hugh | Brady | 01:56:49 | Great trail, beautiful day - distance well beyond my comfort level, compounded by going quite far off message on Carnethy downhill |
Rory | Mitchell | 01:57:36 | Great route; bright windy day |
Alan | Renville | 02:01:26 | A night time circuit of the route on a very windy and moonlit night. Great route, not easy finding the tight trods on the descent coming off Carnethy in the dark! |
Anne-Sophie | Ruget | 02:01:48 | Awesome route, and great conditions |
Alan | Hogg | 02:04:15 | Good route - can see it being used again in future. |
Clare | Mcdonnell | 02:09:00 | A beautiful day with stunning cloud inversion. Would have been quicker if I had not kept stopping to take photos! |
Lucy | Stanfield | 02:09:10 | Picked a windy day to do it so not the fastest effort but a fun run nonetheless |
Angus | Davidson | 02:11:53 | The pictures say it all! |
Duncan | Davis | 02:17:48 | very windy and wet until bellshill. Then it was just windy. Great route. Had to put in a diversion around the turnhouse cows. |
Angus | Johnston | 02:22:29 | Great route, really challenging. Unfortunately body not up to the challenge, could barely run downhill properly |
Morag | McIntyre | 02:24:38 | Sleet on the top of Carnethy, nearly went off the wrong way. A bit of standing time recorded but I'm not going to do this much faster! |
Graham | McIntyre | 02:25:24 | Nice day in the hills and good to see other Carnethy feet about, hard work trying to keep up with Mrs Mc |
Jennifer | Misak | 02:25:34 | Have posted my final recce time as intended to do a final go but mist on monday scuppered that! really enjoyed the route on my recce and shall run it again anyway in future (this time is elapsed and includes a few walks and extra deviations). I agree it was hard to see Glencourse from Allemuir (!) and that swamp next to the cottage would have been good to avoid! |
Hilary | Spenceley | 02:32:23 | longest run in 2 years! Windy conditions and unexpectedly turned into a race with Willie G whcih certainly spurred me on! |
Mark | Hartree | 02:40:17 | overtaken by everyone but a magnificent day out there |
Nikki | Maclean | 02:43:16 | my favourite carnethy challenge route so far |
Margie | Leitch | 02:43:29 | really liked this route - hadn't used (muddy) Cleugh leading to Bell's hill to link up hills south and north of reservoirs before - we had a lot of fun out there |
Trevor | Collins | 02:43:57 | Fine day's weather, good outing in busy hills. |
Nicki | Innes | 02:48:03 | Lovely route in spectacular sunrise and inversion. Didn't pick best routes off Carnethy and Castlelaw but didn't have time for another go at it! |
Willie | Gibson | 02:48:05 | A hard route, Allermuir is hardly on the Glencorse Skyline! would haave been nice to have missed it out. |
