There were some exceptional performances by Carnethy members at the Lakeland 50 and 100 last weekend, which took place in very demanding hot conditions. Nicola Duncan took second place (9 hrs 42 mins 40 secs) in the 50 mile race (over 3000 metres of elevation) from Dalemain to Coniston. She was joined at the finish by Alan Konopka (12:11:30).
In the 100, (actually 105 miles with over 6000 metres of elevation), which is a ‘lap’ of the Lake District, starting and finishing in Coniston, Rachel Normand finished 5th (26 hrs49: 31) in her first ever 100 mile event (Rachel herself was 2nd in the 50-mile event three years ago). Two other Carnethy members completed the course within the 40-hour time limit (typically less than half of entrants finish the gruelling technical course): Tom Kiely (31:19:16) and Mary Kiely (38:50:16). Well done, all!!
The dot-watching experience this year was enhanced by cameras set up at all the feed stations which are manned by incredible volunteers dressed in all sorts of fancy dress, keeping up runners’ spirits.
